Holy Name Of Mary Roman Catholic Church

Holy Name of Mary Church
  • Holy Name of Mary

The Holy Name of mary Church is one of the oldest parishes in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, dating back to 1847. The current church was constructed in 1909, after two former Catholic Churches in Ellicottville burned. It is an excellent example of early 20th centure Gothic Revival Style Church Architecture. Designed to reflect a romantic vision of Medieval European architecture, notable features include its rusticated stone construction, the projecting castellated tower, stone buttresses, and pointed glass windows. This church gives a much different impression than St. John’s Episcopal Church which is an example of early Gothic Revival style architecture, built over 175 years earlier). Also notable is the Tudor Revival style parish house located just to the South of the church.

Can You Serve Liturgical Ministers Needed

Holy Name of Mary has a small number who help each Mass run smoothly by giving of their time to serve as Ushers, Altar Servers, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Lectors, and Mass Coordinators. Now that we have returned to our regular weekly Mass schedule additional help is needed. All Liturgical Ministers are assigned on a rotation basis to avoid having any one person serve every weekend. Currently, to completely meet the ministry needs of the Parish help is needed at all weekday and Sunday Masses.

Please take some time to consider how you might be able to help in any of these roles. As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of Gods varied grace. 1Peter 4:10. Many are called, will you answer? If you could help or have questions please contact Debbie Cirre at or by calling the Church Office.

Catholic Caf Series Begins

Another exciting season of Catholic Cafe is coming your way! This fall we are starting a new series called:

Catholic Answers School of Apologetics: World Religions: A Snapshot Course

In this course, Joe Heschmeyer tackles that question, looking at the biblical view of other religions to answer questions such as:

  • Why care what other religions teach?
  • How should a Christian view other world religions?
  • How do we know that Christianity is uniquely true? What distinguishes it from the other religions of the world?
  • Whats the difference between faith and religion?
  • What should you do if you know nothing about the other persons religion?
  • What, if anything, can we learn from other religions?

Perhaps most importantly, what are some good icebreaker questions to help you find out more about where the other person is coming from and what he believes?

The series begins @ 9:15 AM on Sunday, September 18th, 2022. All are invited to attend!

Church Of The Most Holy Name Of Mary

We were visiting the Arch of the Fatherland near Piazza Venezia and the Forum of Trajan, when we noticed the Church of the Most Holy Name of Mary. It is located to the East of Piazza Venezia and slightly Northeast of Trajan’s Forum. This is a beautifully domed, Catholic church, which is quite moderate and plain in size and appearance compared to some of Rome’s larger cathedrals. In fact, the colorful and slightly grander Santa Maria di Loreto church is only ~100 yards to its West, closer to the Piazza Venezia. Another landmark for locating both the Church of the Most Holy Name of Mary and the Santa Maria di Loreto church is Trajan’s Column which stands toward the North end of Trajan’s Forum. This white marble, Roman Catholic church was designed designed by architect Antoine Derizet and finished in 1741. A key feature of this church is that, enshrined on the altar, an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, believed to have been painted by Luke the Evangelist, is present. The interior the church is elliptical with seven small chapels, decorated in polychrome marble. When in this historic area of Rome take a few moments to enjoy the architecture of this old church.

The Madonna of the RosesWilliam-Adolphe Bouguereau

The Feast of the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an optional memorial celebrated in the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church on 12 September. It has been a universal Roman Rite feast since 1684, when Pope Innocent XI included it in the General Roman Calendar to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Vienna in 1683. It was removed from the Church calendar in the liturgical reform following Vatican II but restored by Pope John Paul II in 2002, along with the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus.
