A Scriptural Look At Self

Self Control and the Bible/ What the Bible says about self control

The concept of self-control gets considerable attention in the Bible. The apostle Paul even mentioned it in his explanation of faith in Jesus Christ as he stood before the Roman governor Felix: And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, Go away for the present. When I get an opportunity I will summon you . One of the three elements of Pauls belief was self-control. The Greek term used in this verse means being self-disciplined, temperate, moderate.

Another Greek word for self-control in the New Testament has the underlying meaning of sober, moderate, discreet. An example is found in Pauls letter to Titus: For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age .

Only one verse in the English Standard Version of the Old Testament uses the term self-control: A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls . The Hebrew word has its root in shutting up, retaining or restraint. A man who cannot control, discipline or restrain himself is very vulnerable, like a city whose walls have been broken down.

Other scriptures speak of individuals exercising self-discipline or self-control in the face of temptation. Like Paul, they found that self-control was an aspect of faith.

What Does The Bible Say About Self

Jesus gave us some interesting examples of what self-control looks like in the Bible. Consider these verses from the Sermon on the Mount.

You have heard that it was said, Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you .

When you read this passage, do you hear what Jesus is saying? He is saying dont give in to what your natural tendency would be. That is what self-control is. Your natural desire may be for you to move or react in one direction, but self-control pulls you in another direction.

Jesus Didn’t Resist Arrest

Jesus could have summoned angels from heaven to rush to His rescue but He didn’t. Throughout His ministry He embraced His humanity choosing to suffer, face hunger, experience grief, being questioned by nay-sayers and opposers, and then face the most humiliating death.

He was not powerless to help Himself yet He showed great restraint. The same power He used to walk on water, heal the sick, and raise the dead was available to Him in His times of need yet He chose a path of humility. All the miracles He performed were to glorify God not bring attention to Himself or make His life on earth easier.

Final thought on self control

Self-control is very important because it allows us to be disciplined in how we think, speak, and act. Let us consider the advice in Philippians 4:8 and follow the examples of Jesus as we guide our thoughts and control our actions.

We Pursue A Greater Eternal Good When We Are Self

Im particularly struck by 1 Peter 4:7 which says, The end of all things is at hand therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. What does the end of all things have to do with being self-controlled? As believers in the Lord Jesus, we await the day when our Savior and Judge will return to earth, to claim those who are his and usher in a new creation. This will be our eternal destiny, and it is what we now watch and prepare for, especially since we do not know the day or the hour of our Lords return.

Watchfulness is to keep the eyes of our hearts fixed on eternal matters to store up treasures in heaven, rather than on earth and to demonstrate through our spiritual groaning a deep desire to be with Jesus once and for all time. Ruling over our impulses and actions is one way we remain watchful, sober-minded, and readied for Christ. By exercising self-control, we are valuing greater, eternal good over immediate gratification. On the discipline of fasting in particular, John Piper writes that we are saying, Lord Jesus, I want you more than this immediate need!³ Through self-control, we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ we set our minds on things above we flee from sin and we do battle against it through prayer.

Pursue a greater, eternal good through self-control because Jesus is coming back!

We Protect Our Souls When We Are Self

What Does The Bible Say About Self-Control?

Jerry Bridges comments on Proverbs 25:28 and how self-control is a necessary protection against sin and temptation:

Self-control is necessary because we are at war with our own sinful desires. James describes those desires as dragging us away and enticing us into sin . Peter says they war against our souls . Paul speaks of them as deceitful . What makes these sinful desires so dangerous is that they dwell within our own hearts. External temptations would not be nearly so dangerous were it not for the fact that they find this ally of desire right within our own breast.²

Exercising self-control keeps our enemy from gaining a foothold over us, and it keeps sin from having the upper-hand in our thoughts, words, and actions. If we do not discipline ourselves and rule over our own actions, we leave ourselves vulnerable to temptation, the influence of the world and the enemy, and, consequently, sin.

Proverbs 25:28He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

We previously spoke about this verse in the beginning of this blog post. A lack of self discipline is compared to a city that has no protection from the enemy.

Proverbs 9:17Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.Theres an excitement with the forbidden and secret desires that are sinful can bring short term pleasure.

Proverbs 16:32He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.I love this verse that is quite literal with its two points. If you are slow to anger you are better than the mighty person and if you rule your spirit you are better than he has has conquered a city.

Proverbs 25:16Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

Sweets are a wonderful treat, but too much of a good thing will cause you sickness. This is also true in the spiritual sense. This verse is referring to food but can also be applied to our spiritual walk.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Self discipline takes a constant renewing and transforming of our mind.
