Managing Director Missionary Department

Missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

On behalf of the Missionary Department and missionaries around the world, we express our deep gratitude for your thoughtful donations. At a time when the gospel message spans the globe and the work continues to change in remarkable ways, the need to support our missionaries is tremendous. You have responded to spiritual stirrings like Amulek did when he sheltered and fed a tired missionary named Alma. In your selfless offering, you embody the true spirit of missionary work, which is love.

As we begin 2022, never has there been a greater need in the world for the light of the restored gospel. It is marvelous to see the Lords guiding hand through the ongoing challenges of the pandemic and the momentous changes in missionary work. Despite obstacles like border closures and travel restrictions, new opportunities continue to open before us. Most missionary training centers are reopened, and missionaries are now being prepared to serve through an inspired blend of at-home, at-MTC, and in-field training. Missionaries in the field are using technology to find and teach in ever more exciting and creative ways.

The Island Nation Has Gone Into Lockdown To Prevent The Virus From Spreading

Rendering of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Neiafu Temple, which is being built in Tonga. The one-story, single-spired, 17,000-square-foot edifice will join the Nuku’alofa Temple in serving Tongas more than 66,000 Latter-day Saints, who make up 62% of the nation’s population. Tonga reported its first-ever case of the coronavirus on Friday, Oct. 29, 2021, after a returning Latter-day Saint missionary tested positive for COVID-19.

A missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has brought the first coronavirus case to the island nation of Tonga, media outlets in New Zealand and Hawaii have reported, and the country went into lockdown Tuesday.

Tongas isolation has helped keep it safe, and it is among the few remaining nations in the world that have avoided outbreaks of COVID-19. It reported its first-ever coronavirus case Friday.

Prime Minister Pohiva Tuionetoa said in a radio address that the infected traveler was among 215 passengers who had arrived on a flight from Christchurch, New Zealand, last Wednesday and had been isolating at a quarantine hotel, The Associated Press reported.

On Wednesday, a church spokesperson in Salt Lake City confirmed that the missionary tested positive after he returned to his home country. The missionary had completed his service in Africa and returned to Tonga on a flight sponsored by that countrys government.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Significance And Basic Qualifications

Completing a mission is often described as a rite of passage for a young Latter-day Saint. However, serving a mission is not necessary for continuance in church membership.

Young men between the ages of 18 and 25 who meet standards of worthiness are strongly encouraged to consider a two-year, full-time proselytizing mission. This expectation is based in part on the New Testament passage “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations” /Matthew#Chapter_28″ rel=”nofollow”> Matt. 28: 1920). The minimum age had previously been age 19 in most countries until October 6, 2012, when Church President Thomas S. Monson announced that all male missionaries, regardless of nation, could serve from age 18. Prior to the announcement, members from some countries were allowed to serve from the younger age to avoid conflict with educational or military requirements. It was also announced that young women may serve beginning at age 19 instead of 21. In 2007, approximately 30% of all 19-year-old LDS men became Mormon missionaries from LDS families that are active in the church, approximately 8090% of 19-year-old men serve a mission.

Missionaries can be sent home for violating mission rules, and occasionally missionaries choose to go home for health or various other reasons. However, the vast majority of missionaries serve the whole two-year or eighteen-month terms.

Proselytizing Missions: Nearly all Latter-day Saint missionaries serve proselytizing missions in which they devote the majority of their time to teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to those unfamiliar with our faith. All missionaries also spend time in community and personal service to others. The Church even recently in their work to meet and teach people. Missionaries teach the fundamentals of the gospel of Jesus Christ:

  • that God is our Heavenly Father, He loves us and has a plan for our eternal happiness.
  • that Jesus Christ is our Savior and only by following his teachings can we receive salvation.
  • that Joseph Smith was a prophet and the Lords instrument in restoring the gospel of Jesus Christ after a long period of apostasy.

A Mission Leaders Call

Elder Holland suggested there are three things that come with a mission leaders call a responsibility, a delight and a crucial opportunity. First, mission leaders are sent into the world to teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. President Russell M. Nelson has said that gathering Israel is the most important work on earth.

Second, as husbands and wives serve as mission leaders, they will have more time serving, talking and traveling together than they have had previously in their wedded life.

Your marriages will be stronger, sweeter, more united and more exemplary than ever before. You will be closer to each other spiritually, Elder Holland said.

And third, he said, to the degree possible, you have the crucial opportunity which is also a responsibility and a delight to save the souls of the missionaries who are called to labor under your direction.

Elder Holland noted that the loss to inactivity of a returned missionary is of immense concern to the Brethren and to the Lord. Those numbers may not be large, but any number is too large if it is my son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter or yours, he said.

As you immerse yourself in this work, you will undoubtedly lose some of the newly baptized converts who dont quite make it fully into the sheepfold, but we must not ever lose the shepherds of that flock.
