Lutheran Church Of Hope Hosting Christmas Light Show For 2nd Straight Year
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa Last year for the holidays people had to find makeshift ways to celebrate. Gathering indoors proved difficult with surging coronavirus cases and deaths, so a local church decided to gather people outside while staying safe.
The Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines put on a makeshift light show in the parking lot for families to come and drive through. The show received overwhelming support, so much so that the church is hosting a light show again this year.
Last years Christmas we didnt have anything that people could come to indoors, said Jeremy Johnson, a pastor at the Lutheran Church of Hope. So we started it last year, but it was such a success we couldnt not bring it back this year.
Journey to the Light is the title of this years show in the churchs parking lot. On the events Facebook page, just under 10,000 people have said they are interested in going.
Instead of just planning the show in a couple of weeks like last year, there was a whole team dedicated to the planning for several months. Dozens of volunteers were at work over the weekend to set up the lights for families to enjoy. Johnson wanted to highlight that the show is completely free and it is meant for anyone and everyone.

Lutheran Church Of Hope Brings Ministry To Ames
A new ministry coming to Ames wants to invite believers and non-believers alike to come and be a part of their community.
Lutheran Church of Hope has been branching out of its first church, located in West Des Moines, for the past couple years. Now, the ministry is bringing its community and services to Ames on Sunday.
Danny Housholder, Ames campus minister, said that the Ames move has been in the making the last couple years.
In 2015, Lutheran Church of Hope noticed that students from Iowa State had been tuning into their online broadcasted sermons. Some had even been making the 45-minute trek to West Des Moines.
More and more people were coming, and the church just ran out of space eventually, said Housholder. So campuses were made in other metro cities, Ankeny and such. The purpose then was to bring the church to the community.
This community is not exclusive to members of the Lutheran faith, either. The church has a mission of making anyone and everyone feel welcome in participating in the campus ministry.
Even if someone wants nothing to do with God, we want them to feel comfortable coming to us, Housholder said. Just talking about what Christianity is about, if thats an interesting topic for you, we love to have those conversations with people.
With a wide array of people coming to the church, Lutheran Church of Hope is offering different services for participants of all ages. Housholder himself is in charge of the churchs college ministry, Kairos.

Lutheran Church Of Hope: Fastest
Inside Hubbell Elementary School, no one seems to notice the spilled coffee or the snoring from a man who likely found no bed the night before.
Volunteers have set up banners, folding chairs and a mobile stage to turn the gym into a sanctuary, a task tackled each Sunday since Lutheran Church of Hope Des Moines began in 2008.
First comes hot breakfast, serving people from area shelters as well as other church members. Then 150 people unite in the gym for early service, where young families and working professionals mix with people in oversized coats and frumpy winter hats.
The scene contrasts with the original Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, where cameras roll live in a 2,800-person auditorium that serves nearly 9,000 worshippers each weekend.
Hope Des Moines will move into a new home downtown this summer, creating an urban mission outpost of the largest, fastest-growing church in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America denomination.
Were saying to the city, Were here, and were committed to you, Hope Des Moines Pastor Jon Anenson said of the move to a 10,000-square-foot former car dealership on the western edge of downtown.
It takes an army of volunteers to overcome the challenges of establishing an urban church, to pick up passengers when aging buses dont start in a frigid Iowa winter, or to take the do-it-yourself route in ripping out carpet and breaking down walls to remake the car dealership into a place of worship.

Test Iowa Site Moves From Waukee To West Des Moines
One of two Test Iowa sites in the Des Moines metro area will move from Waukee to West Des Moines when testing concludes on Friday, August 7 at 6 p.m.
The site, currently located at Waukee South Middle School, is moving in preparation for the start of the school year later this month.
The site will remain in the western metro area, moving to Lutheran Church of Hope, located at 925 Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines. It will reopen there on Monday, August 10 at 8 a.m.
A second metro area Test Iowa site is available at Polk County River Place, 2309 Euclid Avenue in Des Moines. Both sites are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Individuals who want to be tested should go to testiowa.com, complete an assessment and schedule an appointment at the site of their choice.
Test Iowa is a statewide initiative to expand COVID-19 testing. Locations and hours of operation for all test sites can be found at testiowa.com or coronavirus.iowa.gov.
