Christians Living Together Before Marriage Should Christians Live Together Before Marriage

Short answer is No. If you want to honor God with your relationship, Christians should not live together before marriage.

If you still want to live together without being married, its important to understand the consequences of choosing to disobey God in this area.

God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives. Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. 1 Thessalonians 4:7-8 NLT

In Ephesians 2, we also see that when we choose to disobey God, we are choosing to obey the devil.

You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devilthe commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. Ephesians 2:2

Do you want to reject God? Do you want to obey the devil and let him control your relationship?

If youre still not convinced that you shouldnt live together before marriage, here are other common myths of living together before marriage, and why those myths dont line up with Gods word.

What Does The Bible Say About Sleeping In The Same Bed Before Marriage

If you are considering living together unmarried, you may also be wondering, is it a sin to sleep in the same bed before marriage with your boyfriend?

If the Bible does not permit having sex or living together before marriage, sleeping in the same bed would not be pleasing to God either.

In Hebrews 13, the Bible talks about honoring the marriage bed by keeping it pure.

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Hebrews 13:4 NIV

The ESV Bible translation says let the marriage bed undefiled.

And I personally think that sleeping in the same bed before you are married defiles the marriage bed.

As Christians, we already know that we are to avoid sexual immorality and to avoid situations that would cause us to be tempted into sexual sin.

Sleeping in the same bed would not be wise as it could easily cause sexual sin.

Its like saying you arent going to eat a piece of cake, but then you take the cake out of the fridge and stare at it while its sitting on the counter.

If you take the cake out and stare at it, youre most likely going to eat the piece of cake.

Likewise, if you sleep in the same bed together, youre most likely going to engage in physical activity or sexual sin.

Not sleeping in the same bed before marriage is a physical boundary you should set in your relationship.

What Am I Risking By Living Together Before Marriage

What Does the Bible Say About Living Together Before Marriage?

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,

How much do you really love your S.O.? When we were cohabitating, it was hard to resist sexual temptation. But I had to do it. I had to consider how much I loved him. Like, love loved him. I knew that I loved him enough to not condemn his soul. All I could think about was the what-ifs? What if we gave in and he died in his sleep? What if we hooked up and I died in a car accident the next day? My friends laughed at my obsession with death, but I had to be spiritually realistic about it. No man knows the time or the hour and we didnt want to take away our salvation or put ourselves in a place where we didnt have the chance to repent. If he was going down, it wasnt going to be because of me! Remember Eph 5:5

Does Having Sex Create A Marriage

However, once married, the religious laws and customs of the time strongly prohibited adultery and provided physical and financial protections for the spouses and their children rel=nofollow> Exodus 20:14, , , , , , , , , , ).

In todays world, it is the legal marriage that provides similar protections. Merely having sex or living together does not fulfill the functions of the Biblical model of marriage.

Cohabiting Hurts Your Witness

In the summer of our wedding, I picked up a second job as a shift supervisor at a restaurant to make some extra money for the ceremony. I remember one time when a new server I was training found out I was to be married in a couple months but wasnt living with my fiancée. He was astounded. He didnt understand why I would plan a marriage without first testing the relationship by living together. He was concerned that I was making a mistake and tried to persuade me to rethink the wedding.

My decision to live apart until marriage gave me an opportunity to share my faith with him. Jesus calls us to live differently than the rest of the world and in so doing to direct the world to him:

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Even if youre able to resist the temptation of sexual sin, if youre living with your partner, your friends will assume youre engaging in sex. When we wait to live together until were married, its a witness to our friends, family, and coworkers. It demonstrates that Christ is our King, and that what he says matters to us. Our life can offer a compelling reason to follow him.

Additional Consequences Of Living Together Before Marriage

Have you considered the consequences of having a child out of wedlock?

The Witherspoon Institute, a conservative think tank out of Princeton, New Jersey, issued a report called Marriage and the Public Good: Ten Principles. They identify four threats to marriage, including cohabitation arrangements. The report states that these arrangements are not a good alternative to marriage but are a threat, and they surely do not provide a good environment for the rearing of children.

Nearly 40 percent of babies born in the United States in 2007 were delivered by unwed mothers, according to data released by the National Center for Health Statistics. The highest percentage was among women 25 to 29 years old. Can you be sure your significant other will continue to live with and provide support for the family after a child is born if he isnt committed enough to marry you?

But What If Living Together Is The Only Option For Me

Living Together Before Marriage | Christian Perspective

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

What is the floor plan of your dwelling? Is it a loft-style apartment that calls for you to be in close contact every moment? Do you have separate rooms on opposite sides of the house? How many pillows do you own? Being completely transparent, when we lived together pre-marriage, there were times that he did sleep in the bed with me, but we didnt cuddle. We didnt even hold hands. I often slept directly on the mattress because I needed a little extra barrier that night.

Living together is not the sin.

Arrangements dont necessarily restrict the temptations you face. We survived our ordeal of living together with our salvationand a little bit of our sanityintact. I dont know if we would make the same decision if we went back in time, but we know in the midst of it all, we always make sure that we know whats most important in our relationshipour responsibility to, and relationship with, Christ.

The Bible Is Clear: Living Together Before Marriage Is Sexual Immorality

The Bible is very clear in what it says about sexual immorality. From what we can read of what Jesus said and Paul wrote, marriage between a man and a woman is the only form of partnership that God accepts and blesses. All sexual relationships outside marriage are considered fornication.

Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Hebrews 13:4. In other words, there is nothing unclean about sexual relations within marriage, but there is judgment for those engaged in fornication outside marriage. Consequently, this also includes cohabitation, i.e. people living together before marriage as a couple. Such conditions are clearly described here as fornication and adultery, even if youve never been married before.

What Are The Health Risks

Is having a sexual relationship before marriage healthy?

There are at least 19 million new cases of sexually transmissible diseases in the United States every year. Women are infected two times more often than men.

Other studies show that 80 percent of young people are sexually active before marriage. It is no secret that sexual activity before or outside of marriage brings a high risk of contracting a sexually transmissible disease. By their late teenage years, at least three-fourths of all U.S. teens have had intercourse, and more than two-thirds of all sexually experienced teens have had two or more partners .

Each year, about 12,000 women get cervical cancer in the United States. Almost all of these cancers are related to the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus . This cancer often takes years to develop after a woman becomes infected.

Once infected by an STD, your chances of passing it along to a new partner are extremely high! And with so many people having multiple sexual partners, the spread of STDs has become almost epidemic.

And these factors dont even take into consideration the emotional and psychological issues associated with disease or the impact of unwanted pregnancy. Are these chances youre willing to take?

The Marriage Bed Is Sacred

The Bible tells us the marriage bed is to be undefiled. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous . Were told to guard our marriage bed. That doesnt mean just from other men or women while were married, but even from ourselves. Jumping into bed before marriage is still defiling the marriage bed. Stay out of the sheets until after the ceremonyyou wont regret it.

Flee Fornication: What The Bible Says About Living Together Before Marriage

Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are Gods. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20

Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. 1 Corinthians 7:1-2

The dictionary meaning of the word fornication means any unlawful sexual intercourse including adultery. In the Bible, the Greek definition of the word fornication means to commit illicit sexual intercourse. What constitutes unlawful sex? Whose laws do we live by? Worldly standards or laws many times do not always line up with the Word of God. The founding fathers of the United States established many laws that were originally based on Christian standards and the laws of the Bible. However, through time the United States has drifted far from these standards and at the present our moral standards are shocking the world. However, immorality is not only found in the U.S. but is a world-wide epidemic. Societies throughout history and around the globe have embraced sexual standards that are called sins in the Bible.

Is It OK for Christians to Live Together Before Marriage?

These are the kinds of articles that always make me weary of entering into a kind of ministry lest I lead sheep astray and invoke the wrath of God. You are unqualified for ministry, as Paul says that Christians should abstain from ALL APPEARANCES OF EVILBy writing this article you have shared Satanic council in the name of Christ. You have encouraged people to put themselves in compromising situations and you arrogantly imagine that what you do honors GodDelete your website. You are UNQUALIFIED.

Based off the title of the article and a few snippets of text, one commenter almost derailed me from my ministry. In the 2 years that it has been presented to me, Ive never addressed it. Some surely agree with her but let me say this:

Because of my honesty, transparency, and calling to be a Titus 2 woman, so many people have been coming forward and are open to discussing their situations. Without judgment and with godly council, I have never encouraged someone to live with their partner outside of the sanctity of marriage.

Admitting a sin isnt the same as condoning it.

Someone almost made me lose sight of that.

Heres the problem with this perception of my intentions.

When people are seeking answers to a modern-day problem within an ancient, living text whether is it addresses a specific resolution or not we have to seek the heart of the matter.

Is Living Together Before Marriage A Sin

Heres the truth about premarital cohabitation. Living together isnt a sin, but shacking up is. Differentiation is often found when you close your doors. Shacking up is defined and described as:

  • casually moving in with someone you regularly hit the sheets with
  • Couples who live together and are not married
  • Regularly hitting the sheets with someone you are not dating
  • to live together as spouses without being legally married
  • to have illicit sexual relations
