Who Wrote The Bible

Scholars have investigated the issue for centuries, but many questions persist.

Over centuries, billions of people have read the Bible. Scholars have spent their lives studying it, while rabbis, ministers and priests have focused on interpreting, teaching and preaching from its pages.

As the sacred text for two of the worlds leading religions, Judaism and Christianity, as well as other faiths, the Bible has also had an unmatched influence on literatureparticularly in the Western world. It has been translated into nearly 700 languages, and while exact sales figures are hard to come by, its widely considered to be the worlds best-selling book.

But despite the Bibles undeniable influence, mysteries continue to linger over its origins. Even after nearly 2,000 years of its existence, and centuries of investigation by biblical scholars, we still dont know with certainty who wrote its various texts, when they were written or under what circumstances.

Facts About The Bible

Before knowing who is the , it is necessary to know all the details related to this Book that reveals the word of God through prophets.

To summarize who is the author of the bible, we can say that it was written by around 40 authors, of different professions, in an approximate period of 1,500 to 1,600 years, it consists of 1,189 chapters, which was written in 3 continents, and for the course in 3 languages, containing 66 books that constitute a whole.

It is considered the most printed book in history, where everything focuses on Salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, there is no other book that details and contains these characteristics, and even so despite the unbelievers who claim that it is human writings and not by divine messages, a message or doctrine that contradicts it has not been found, do you still doubt that it is of divine inspiration?

After all this information they wonder, who wrote the Bible? There is one author who is the most important God Himself.

Peter said this:

But first of all know this, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of personal interpretation, since no prophecy was ever given by an act of human will, but men inspired by the Holy Spirit spoke on behalf of God.

The Holy Spirit communicated through the authors of the Bible through visions and messages. For this reason, it was they who wrote as human beings, but the Holy Spirit guided all their writings.

And the words of the Apostle Paul:

Who Wrote The Bible: God Or Man

The Scripture says in 2 Peter 1:20-21, Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit revealed to the prophets the messages of Scripture. The writers of the Bible wrote not according to their own will or whim, but only as they were moved, or controlled, by the Spirit of God. The Bible is Gods own book!

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. The Holy Bible affects human beings so profoundly, because all the Bible is God-breathed. Its more than a nice collection of moral principles its more than a great book its an inspired document, Gods book. The prophets who wrote the Bible related what they saw and heard in human language, but their message came directly from God.

How Was The Bible Written

Who wrote the Bible?

I suppose it would be good for us to begin by defining the Bible. When I use the term Bible I mean 66 books39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. These 66 books are diverse and yet all tell one foundational storythe story of Jesus.

These books were originally written in three different languages. A majority of the Old Testament was written in biblical Hebrew with a bit of Aramaic . The New Testament was written in Koine Greek. We would be remiss to not also mention the pivotal role that the Septuagint played in the writing of the New Testament. The LXX is the Greek translation of the Old Testament. It was often a source for New Testament writers quotation of the Old Testament.

These 66 books also span a time period of around 1500 years . But its actually difficult to nail down when the book was actually written as much of the material likely survived through oral tradition. Its possible that a book like Job is as old as the time of Abraham but wasnt actually given pen to paper until a much later date. Most would place the oldest books to at least 1500 BCE and the last book of the New Testament written perhaps as late as 96AD.

It is also astonishing to think of all the ways in which the Bible was preserved. It began, quite likely, as oral tradition but eventually was given a written record. Some were scratched on potsherds, others used wax tablets, as well as stone, wooden, or clay tablets. The most common writing material was parchment and papyrus.

The Authors Of The New Testament

With such a long history of authors and books and stories combined in the Old Testament, the New Testament covers less time in history but includes events that were foretold prophecies from the Old Testament and changes in law for people to follow.

It all starts with the first gospel written by Matthew, Mark, Luke , and John . Each man of God came from a different profession to follow Jesus and share His story of salvation to the world.

  • Matthew was a tax collector.
  • ‘s profession is unknown.

Does It Matter If Jesus Really Did And Said What Is In The Gospels

Yes. For faith to really be of any value, it must be based on facts, on reality. Here is why. If you were taking a flight to London, you would probably have faith that the jet is fueled and mechanically reliable, the pilot trained, and no terrorists on board. Your faith, however, is not what gets you to London. Your faith is useful in that it got you on the plane. But what actually gets you to London is the integrity of the plane, pilot, etc. You could rely on your positive experience of past flights. But your positive experience would not be enough to get that plane to London. What matters is the object of your faith — is it reliable?

Is the New Testament an accurate, reliable presentation of Jesus? Yes. We can trust the New Testament because there is enormous factual support for it. This article touched on the following points: historians concur, archaeology concurs, the four Gospel biographies are in agreement, the preservation of document copies is remarkable, there is superior accuracy in the translations. All of this gives a solid foundation for believing that what we read today is what the original writers wrote and experienced in real life, in real places.

John, one of the writers sums it up well, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”12

Heres Why The Gospels Were Written

In the early years after Jesus’ death and resurrection there was no apparent need for written biographies about Jesus. Those living in the Jerusalem region were witnesses of Jesus and well aware of his ministry.6

However, when news of Jesus spread beyond Jerusalem, and the eyewitnesses were no longer readily accessible, there was a need for written accounts to educate others about Jesus’ life and ministry.

If you would like to know more about Jesus, this article will give you a good summary of his life: Why Jesus is God.

Who Compiled The Old Testament

Who Wrote the Bible? | Ancient Mysteries (S1, E13) | Full Episode

Compiling and ascribing divine inspiration of the Old Covenant Scriptures occurred over time, by consensus, by evidences of unity, self-attestation, personal spiritual devotion, and by liturgical usage in communities. There are theories of canonization of selected books by councils . However, much of this is reliant upon commentary . The sacred texts, preserved by Israel as Gods Word to them, were more formally recognized, particularly, after the Babylonian Captivity. By the time of Jesus, the texts that Jesus affirmed as being the Word of God were complete. God is sovereign over all things including His Word.

Nehemiah 9:30

How Many People Wrote The Bible

Many people like to memorize the list of the books of the Bible in the order they are found in their version of the Scriptures. This helps to find books and verses more quickly, and I encourage everyone who wants to use their Bible more effectively to do so.

But, how about memorizing the authors along with the books? Bible believers believe that God wrote the Bible using human writers. Learning who these writers were would give you a better understanding of the perspective of the book assuming you know a little bit about the author.

In some cases the author is not absolutely known. I will first list the name of the commonly accepted author. If there are multiple people who possibly authored the book I will list them in descending order of common acceptance. There is much debate on some of the authors and probably wont be definitively answered by us here, but you are welcome to comment as to why you think a certain person was the author of a particular book.

Forty Writers And A Single Author

What is the Bible, who wrote it and how do we know it’s true? CQ kids

To find out who the author of the Bible is, we commented that the vast majority of the writers of the Bible accepted to have made their writings in the name of Jehovah the only true God and in the same way that they were ruled by him or by an angel . The prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures proclaimed more than 40 times: This is what the Lord has said .

Many of his writings begin with messages such as the word of the Lord that happened to Hosea . Relating them to the prophets of God. For his part, the apostle Peter showed: Men spoke on behalf of God when carried away by holy spirit .

It is for this reason that the Bible is at the same time a combined and consolidated book, written by many men who showed that behind their work there was the will and the word of God. In other words, God used ministers of the word to establish his thoughts. For this reason, below we will show who the forty writers of the Bible were and how did they do it?

  • Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy = Moses 1400 BC
  • Joshua = Joshua 1350 BC
  • Revelation = John 90 AD

Historians Confirm What The Bible Says About Jesus

Not only do we have well-preserved copies of the original manuscripts, we also have testimony from both Jewish and Roman historians.

The gospels report that Jesus of Nazareth performed many miracles, was executed by the Romans, and rose from the dead. Numerous ancient historians back the Bible’s account of the life of Jesus and his followers:

Cornelius Tacitus , an historian of first-century Rome, is considered one of the most accurate historians of the ancient world.8 An excerpt from Tacitus tells us that the Roman emperor Nero “inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class…called Christians. …Christus , from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus….”9

Flavius Josephus, a Jewish historian , wrote about Jesus in his Jewish Antiquities. From Josephus, “we learn that Jesus was a wise man who did surprising feats, taught many, won over followers from among Jews and Greeks, was believed to be the Messiah, was accused by the Jewish leaders, was condemned to be crucified by Pilate, and was considered to be resurrected.”10

Suetonius, Pliny the Younger, and Thallus also wrote about Christian worship and persecution that is consistent with New Testament accounts.
