Use Gods Word in these Bible verses on temptation to learn how to resist and overcome the tempting situations in your life.
I dont know you or your story. I dont know what temptations you are trying to fight right now.
In fact, our biggest temptations probably dont look the same!
For most of my life, food was my biggest temptation. My 100-pound weight loss journey was far more a spiritual/character journey than it was just about a change in my body.
It was a daily fight against my desire for food the thing that was trying to lure me away from God and tell me that I could and should get what I wanted when I wanted it.
My food cravings told me that they were a need, not a want. They screamed at me to turn to food instead of God when I knew food would never fix the problems I was dealing with.
Small temptations turned into huge, character-altering temptations that destroyed both my body and my soulbut thats not the end of my story.
Because I have a God who fought for me and made me an overcomer as I fought back against one temptation at a time.
And, whatever you are facing, you can too.
Read on to learn more about my own battle against temptation and how to fight yours.
Verses For Overcoming Temptation
Temptation is a fork in the road. It is choosing which road to travel: the high one or the low one.
Wouldnt life be easier if there were no forks, no decisions to makeif the road were simply a straight and narrow path? But the Bible gives us no magical formulas for that kind of life. It assures us that we will come to those forks regularly, and we must choose where to step. Some forks will lead down roads of sexual immorality, some of gluttony, some of materialism, some of revenge, and too many more to name. If we could see the road map, it might look like a plate of spaghetti.
As a matter of fact, the wiser and more mature in Christ we become, the more treacherous and the subtler are the choices. They dont become easier but more difficult, for the devil is no fool. Advancing spiritually leads to advancing opposition. This is an important truth to remember while walking with the Lord. He will hold our hand, and He will never fail to guide us in the direction thats right and true.
When you find yourself on the front lines of battle, stand firm and fight!
Overcome Temptation Through Suffering
1 Peter 2:21 teaches us, To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
Its never been a popular idea, but the Bible tells us that suffering is one of the ways we overcome temptation. For many who are dealing with something like porn addiction, the withdrawal symptoms may be a form of suffering.
The suffering of Christ frees us from the penalty of sin, but it also gives us a model for how we are to deal with sin. In chapter 4 verse 1 Peter continues with this idea, Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.
As miserable as suffering is in the moment, James 1:2-3 tells us to Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. James tells us that the suffering of hardship is like endurance training. By suffering in the face of temptation, we learn to persevere in the faith. We grow purer through testing like refined gold .

How Do I Resist Temptation
Strange as it sounds, temptation is necessary for our spiritual growth. If we werenât tempted, we wouldnât be able to choose between good and evil . And if we couldnât choose good when offered an alternative, we couldnât grow spiritually .
One key to resisting temptation is consistent obedience. If you give in sometimes, the temptation is harder to resist in the future. If you resist consistently, you get stronger and it is easier to resist in the future. Much of the strength to resist comes from the Saviorâs Atonement working in your life. As you do your best to learn the Saviorâs teachings and follow them, the Lord strengthens you to withstand temptation.
The scriptures teach other ways to resist temptation:
âPray always, that you may come off conqueror yea, that you may conquer Satanâ .
âWhoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower themâ .
âResist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to youâ .
Also, itâs important to know that itâs not wrong to be tempted. Even Jesus was tempted. âHe suffered temptations but gave no heed unto themâ . You can look to His exampleâand the examples of many others in the scripturesâto help you.
Temptation Is Not Sin Yielding To Temptation Is
With that background, Paul exhorted believers not to make the same choices the Israelites madenot to provoke God’s discipline by willfully sinning. None of us is above God’s discipline if we engage in sin. We must look for and take “the way of escape” God provides in every situation where temptation is found . To think our temptation is unique is to believe a lie. “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man” . There are no “new” temptations in life.
The apostle James argued that if temptation becomes serious, it is because we have allowed it to do so. Our own “desires” entice us away from God and desire “gives birth to sin” . God doesn’t tempt us, but He may allow temptation to enter our lives in order to give us opportunities to make obedient and mature choices.
Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, and He took the same means of escape that is available to usobedience to God’s Word . Temptation is not sin yielding to temptation is. There is always a righteous choice to be made if we are willing to seek it.

Refocus Your Mind And Heart With Praise
How often have you been tempted to sin when your whole heart was fully concentrated on worshiping the Lord? I’m guessing your answer is never.
Praising God takes our focus off of self and puts it on God. You may not be strong enough to resist temptation on your own, but as you focus on God, he will inhabit your praises. He will give you the strength to resist and walk away from the temptation.
Psalm 147 might be a good place to start:
Praise the Lord. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!
Overcome Temptation By Understanding Its Source
1 John 2:16 tells us, For everything in the worldthe lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of lifecomes not from the Father but from the world.
Where does temptation come from? Asking this question is important because it tells us what were dealing with. If you find yourself falling into porn or other temptation regularly, you should ask why.
John informs us that the fallen world is a source of temptation. When Jesus prayed for His followers right before the crucifixion, He said, They are not of the world, even as I am not of it .
James 1:13 gives further insight into temptation, When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. So, temptation doesnt come from God. Thats important to remember, because when were feeling discouraged and defeated its easy to blame God. Where does it come from? James says people are dragged away by their own desire. The Bible tells us we have to look at ourselves honestly and acknowledge our responsibility for giving into temptation.
1 Peter 5:8 tells us the third source of temptation: Satan himself. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Jesus Was Tempted: Gods Word Will Help You To Resist The Tactics Of Satan
Some people just quote Scriptures when temptation comes. Notice what Jesus did. Jesus obeyed the Scriptures He was quoting.
28. Matthew 4:1-7 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. If you are the Son of God, he said, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ Jesus answered him, It is also written: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.
29. Hebrews 2:18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
30. Psalm 119:11-12 I have treasured Your word in my heart so that I may not sin against You. LORD, may You be praised teach me Your statutes.
Resisting Temptation Bible Verses
Many of us go through the same battles. We all have to make war. The greatest area that Satan seeks to tempt believers in is in sexual temptations. Im tired of believers whining when God has said in His Word that He has given us power over these things. He has provided a way out. Why are so many professing Christians involved with porn and masturbation? I have to go through the same things that pull at me. I have to go through the same temptations, but God has given us power and He is faithful. Hold on to His promise. God says He will provide a way out in the face of temptation and He does provide a way out.
1. 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
2. 1 Peter 5:9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
3. 1 Corinthians 7:2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.
4. Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Struggling with temptation?
If you answered no, then biblically speaking, you are not being honest . Battling sin and temptation is a characteristic of all true Christians. Weve been set free from the power of sin, but that doesnt mean we live a perfect and sinless life.
We are called to put off the old man and put on the new man , walking in newness of life. As we grow and mature as believers, our struggles may changebut they do not completely go away. One struggle may go away, and God may reveal to us another sin that was there all along, something we didnt see because we were so fixated on other struggles.

What Does The Scriptures Say About Temptation And How We Can Overcome It
The Scriptures tell us that when it comes to resisting temptations, it is important to note that all our own efforts to resist will be weak and ineffective unless they are empowered by the Holy Spirit through the constant reading, studying, and meditating on the word. It is by equipping ourselves with what God says in His Word that we are transformed by the renewing of your mind , and empowered by the Holy Spirit to successfully resist temptations from the enemy. It is worth pointing out that there is no other weapon against temptation except the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God . In the same light, Colossians 3:2 says, Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.
Behold, if we allow our minds to be filled with the Latest TV shows, Music, and all that the Culture has to offer us, we will always be bombarded with messages and images that inevitably lead to sinful lusts. On the other hand, if our minds are filled with the Word of God, His majesty and holiness, the Compassion and Teachings of Christ, well realize that our interest in the lusts of the world will diminish and even end up disappearing. Note that without the Word of God in our minds, we are open to anything that Satan wants to throw into our lives. Gods Word is the only means to guard our hearts and minds in order to maintain the sources of temptation sealed and kept away from us.

Resist Temptation With The Word Of Truth
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Jesus overcame the devil’s temptations in the wilderness with the Word of God. If it worked for him, it will work for us. And because Jesus was fully human, he is able to identify with our struggles and give us the exact help we need for overcoming temptation.
While it can be helpful to read God’s Word when you’re being tempted, sometimes that’s not practical. Even better is to practice reading the Bible daily so that eventually you have so much of it on the inside, you are ready whenever temptation strikes.
If you are reading the Bible regularly, you will have the full counsel of God at your disposal. You will start to have the mind of Christ. When temptation comes knocking on your door, all you’ll have to do is draw your weapon, aim, and fire.
