Whats So Important About Reading The Bible

Christians believe that the Bible is the Word of the Creator God .

It is common to hear Christians say, God said, and you might wonder how?

While God is not one to be boxed in and limited by our understanding of His ways, one channel that God speaks to us is through His word, which is described by the writer of Hebrews as alive .

It is common to hear Christians say, God said , and you might wonder: How?

In the book of 2 Timothy, the Apostle Paul tells his disciple, Timothy, that all Scripture is God-breathed. One translation translates it more simply as inspired by God .

The purpose of the Bible? To prepare and equip His people to do every good work.

No one enters into a new relationship without communication as a child of God, our relationship with God is no different.

God desires to speak to us and He often does it through what He has already revealed in the Bible, the word of God .

Where To Start Reading

The Bible is a big book, and it can be confusing for someone who is brand new to it.

Some people try start in the beginning of the Bible and read it straight through, which is what I tried to do when I first got saved. I dont recommend this to someone who is just starting out.

Instead, I suggest to start reading the New Testament first. .

I suggest this because the Old Testament and the New Testament are different covenants. Thats really what the word testament means, it means covenant.

Now the whole Bible points to Jesus. The Old points to Jesus, and the New points to Jesus. They just do it in different ways.

The Old Testament points to Jesus by prophecy, so it is subtle and hidden.

The New Testament points to Jesus through remembrance and explanation, so it is easier to grasp.

The Old Covenant conceals the New Covenant, but the New Covenant reveals the Old Covenant.

I also recommend that you grab a highlighter, and that you highlight everything that you understand. When you finish the New Testament, do it again.

After you do this process anywhere from 2-4 times, then go back and read the Old Testament. Youll find that your understanding of the Bible will increase dramatically.

Reading Devotionals To Meditate On Gods Word

Cracking the Book: How to Start Reading the Bible by J ...

I love devotionals but they should not replace reading the actual Bible. Most devotionals include one or a few bible verses and a summary to reflect on.

Again, devotionals often include the authors opinion and revelations, which can be useful, but devotionals should be used to supplement your bible reading.

I like to start my morning time with God by reading a devotional, I think of a devotional book as my warm-up. It only takes a few minutes and it gets me fired up to read the Bible, which is like the main workout.

And I like to end my day with a devotional before bed as an easy way to read Gods Word at night.

  • A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education. Theodore Roosevelt

Where Should I Start Reading The Bible

A lot of new and seasoned Christians have a story about their attempts to read the Bible cover to cover that goes something like this: It was going great as they read through Genesis and Exodus, but somewhere in Leviticus or Numbers, they started to get bogged down in details they didnt quite understand. And by the time they hit Deuteronomy, they were done.

While its true that all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness , we need to recognize that the Bible is not like any other book. It isnt necessarily meant to be read from front to back. In fact, the Bible is actually a library.

The Protestant Bible is comprised of 66 books, and many of those books are written in a variety of different genres or types of literature. These genres all need to be read a little differently. Starting at Genesis and trying to read straight through without a strategy can get frustrating if you dont know how these books and their literary genres work together.

There are a few ways to classify the genres of the Bible, but they typically fall into these categories.

Genesis: Where It All Began

In the Old Testament, Genesis, which means origin, is a good starting point too. Reading this narrative about the beginning of the world, how sin came to be and the impact it had on the world, gives us a reference point to start understanding the context of the New Testament.

Many famous Bible stories like Adam and Eve, Noahs ark, and the story of Joseph are found in Genesis.

Introduction to the book: The Book of Genesis tells us how everything began from humanitys history to become the world we know today. It reveals a dramatic prologue of Gods love for us, the tragedies of sin and the human race, and God initiating a brilliant plan to win us back from the clutches of darkness.

He does this by passing down a covenant blessing through Abraham and his family, including Isaac, Jacob, and other individuals, in order to bless all the families of the earth.

These descendants will become the foundation for the nation of Israel and Jesus the Messiah, who brings salvation for all of humanity.

Are You Wanting To Start Reading The Bible But Arent Sure How To Begin

When I started attending Bible college at age 19, even having grown up in a Christian home, I found it hard to know how to gain the most out of my time in the Word. I hadnt made personal devotions a habit up until that point, although Id learned plenty of verses in Sunday school and youth group, so it was a challenge to me at first.

I wondered if I was doing it right.

Should I just start reading through the book of Genesis?

Was there a particular version I should choose over another?

And what did all that Old Testament stuff about animal sacrifice really mean, anyway?

If you are like me, and didnt have a personal devotional time growing up or just didnt grow up in a Christian home, it can be intimidating to figure out where or how, exactly, you should start reading the Bible.

Now that many years have passed, I have learned much about the essentials of reading and learning Scripture, whether as a new believer or a long-time Christian who has not read the Bible much lately. I want to share with you five key practices to keep in mind as you seek to spend more time in Gods Word.

These practices will give you a process that you can follow at all times to give you confidence that you are reading the Bible according to the way it was written and in its proper context. Through reading the Bible, your heart and mind will be changed by the beautiful, life-giving Word of God!

Bible Reading Plan For Beginners

If you are ready to commit and dive into the whole Bible then you need a Bible reading plan. Then you dont have to think of where to start reading the Bible, you read it all!

When reading the Bible all the way through there are two main ways to do it.

One way is just from cover to cover. This is often the easiest place to start.

*Sometimes Bible reading plans include the books in a different order to break up some of the longer story sections and make it easier to read!

You can also follow a chronological order of reading. The way the Bible is currently published is not necessarily the order the books were written in.

When looking at context we realize a few books actually repeat stories of others.

This kind of Bible reading plan is often as a way to go deeper after reading it through at least once cover to cover.

Its good to mix things up and read the Bible both ways!

This year Ive read the entire Bible all the way through for the first time. It taught me so much about the bigger picture of the Bible and how Gods plan was happening throughout.

I even took on a challenge that is only for those who are really ready for a big commitment I read it through in 60 days. Check it out here!

If you are looking for a Bible Reading Plan for the entire Bible here it is! This one will go back and forth on the Old Testament and New Testament everyday!
