How Long Does It Take To Read The Whole Bible

How Long Does It Take to Read the Bible? Depends How Fast You Read…

Grandpa must be the slowest reader in the world, claimed my young daughter. He reads the Bible every day and hes still not finished!

The rest of us chuckled. Years later, I remembered her assessment of my fathers reading prowess while devouring my new NIV study Bible. I had just returned to the Church after years of being spiritual, but not religious. A friend gave me the Bible as a gift. In about a week, I had read it from cover-to-cover, including the study sections.

Honestly, I dont remember how many hours per day I spent reading. I was, however, living alone and on vacation at the time. I carried it with me everywhere. I read while eating, while in bed, on the beach, and even well, I carried it everywhere.

So, to find an accurate answer to how long does it take to read the whole Bible, I sought assistance from a power greater than me. I googled it. The featured answer was 70 hours and 40 minutes, broken down into 52 hours, 20 minutes for the Old Testament and 18 hours, 20 minutes for the New.

Now, I admit I skimmed over parts of Numbers and the beginning of 1 Chronicles, but I was sure it didnt take me that long. Sure enough, the question was answered differently by various groups and individuals. In general, 54 to 72 hours seems to be the accepted pace to read the Bible straight through.

S To Take When Reading The Bible Feels Boring

The pages of the Bible are filled with people like us who were far from perfect, living in an imperfect world. We can read of wars, scandals, violence, murder, imprisonments, as well as miracles, wisdom, history, prophecy, resurrection and more.

Many stories show individuals who appeared weak or worthless in the eyes of the world, but they triumphed because they placed their hope and trust in God. More importantly, the whole Bible is Gods spoken Word to us which reveals who He is, who we are in relation to Him and His redemptive plan for the broken world in which we live. Yet so many of us are disengaged with the Bible, opting for other things to fill our time and lacking the motivation to read it. Some would go as far to say its boring.

According to the 2019 State of the Bible report from Barna, more than one-third of adults report never using the Bible. In contrast, half of monthly Bible users agree that their engagement with the Bible has made them more willing to engage with their faith, 61% express they always experience a greater awareness of their need for God and 50% desire to know God more. Bible engagement also positively affects their relationships with others and one in three give more of their time, energy and finances. Imagine what these statistics could look like if we engaged with the Bible on a regular basis, not just a handful of times a year or not at all.

Reading The Quran Would Take A Little Over Six Hours

How Long Does It Take to Read Each Book of the Bible ...

Determining how long it takes to read any text, whether the Bible or the Koran, is, at its core, a simple matter of arithmetic. Plug in the length of the text, divide by the average number of words per minute a reader can be expected to read, tap a few keys on the calculator, and you have your answer, expressed in minutes. A bit more division and you can have it expressed in hours, days, years, or whatever works for you. Of course, mathematics doesn’t account for the need for a human reader to take breaks, or perhaps reread a section that didn’t fully register, or the other variables of life. There’s also a difference between reading and studying, too, so keep that in mind.

Nevertheless, mathematically speaking, the length of the Quran , divided by 200 words per minute , means that the book can be finished in 385 minutes, or about six-and-a-half hours. Therefore, the average reader could start reading the Quran after lunch and have it finished by supper.

Approaching The Bible Rightly

While reading the Bible on a regular basis is a great start, it is also important to approach the Bible in a proper manner. It is easy to get into a habit of trying to focus only on application when reading the Bible. It is absolutely necessary for the Christian to apply the Bible to his or her life, but sometimes we can make applications that are forced or unintended.

In order to avoid misapplication of texts, it is good to read whole biblical books and try to understand the text in light of both its immediate context and in light of the entire biblical book. Always ask what the text says about the character and nature of God.

I like crazy challengesthe kind that are appealing to you specifically because theyre undoable. Like when I thought running 5 miles was epically long and then the girl I was dating ran a full marathon . In some weird way, the very fact that I thought I could never do it made me want to try.

Thats why for years Ive had a dream of carving out a week to read straight through the Bible. I tried it before with the NT and other sections. I tried to do it four years ago and failed. But theres something helpful about covering so much content in such a short time that its all in front of your mind at once. Its exhausting its transformative. You immerse your brain in Gods words until it starts coming out in your sleep.

This Christmas break I was finally able to do it. Reading through the Pentateuch on day one was like climbing the worlds tallest mountain to see the entire OT panorama at your feet. Reading through the NT on day 6 and finishing with Revelation was sheer wonder and joy at the grand victory of the Lamb. It was a transformative experience.

And so I want to issue a Bible reading challenge to my friends. Set a crazy goalsomething youve never even come close to before. Shatter the barriers of what you think possible or plausible, not to earn credit with God or anyone else, but just to enjoy reading His words because its a beautiful book.

How Long Does It Take To Read The Bible? – The Bible

For 2,000 years, the Bible has been the sacred text of Christians. The document, written over centuries by dozens of men, contains just about everything required of a major religion: history, doctrine, law, passages of comfort and inspiration, passages of wrath and condemnation, and everything in between.

As religious texts go, the Bible is actually a pretty thick one, too. According to Word Counter, an English translation of the text is in the neighborhood of 800,000 words, roughly on par with Stephen King‘s novel “The Stand.” The Koran, by comparison, is a relatively light read, at 77,000 words, according to Study.com.

So how long would it take to read the Bible, from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21? The answer will depend on how quickly you read generally, how closely you pay attention , how often you take rests, and so on. But in general, an average reader could probably knock it out in a couple of weeks or so if they committed to it.
