Why And How Should I Read The Bible

You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life. John 5:39-40

Spiritual maturity comes through time spent with God. The Bible is Gods instruction to us, by spending time in scripture reading, we come to know of him, what he expects of us as well as what is to come. If we want to fall in love with Christ, we should turn to the scriptures as the scriptures reveal the true character of Christ.

Pray About What You Read

I used to write my prayers as part of my journaling. Now I just talk to God in the moment. God, help me to understand this better, God, show me how this applies to my life, God, please help me to be willing to change my life as You show me I should be in these versesprayers like these should be part of our response to what we have read. The Holy Spirit is faithful to illuminate our hearts and minds, if we but ask.

Hint: keep a box of kleenex handy. Just sayin.

In the back of my thin notebook I put the date again and list my prayers, whether they be for myself or other people. I work from the back forward with this list and from the front backward with the verses, so that eventually I meet in the middle. Then its time to grab another notebook.

Digging In: How I Personally Study The Bible

How to Study the Bible For Yourself

This is the method I use when I really want to go all-out and learn as much as I can from my Bible. For this, Im essentially using the Quick-Start Method but adding multiple layers of research and study.

First, I read through the passage slowly, underlining interesting phrases, putting boxes or circles around major keywords, and adding squiggly lines under things that confuse me or that I find curious.

Then I slowly go through the passage, looking up every keyword, sentence, or phrase using my Logos app and sermons that I find online.

Next, I take notes in the margins and box them off, with arrows pointing from the section of scripture to my notes.

I imagine if I were the one writing this story, in a bare-bones way. Are there things the Biblical text is telling me that I wouldnt add myself, if I were just relaying the story? If so, those things are probably important.

A Literal Translation is a word for word translation of the Greek and Hebrew text. The King James Version would be an example of a literal translation. Paraphrased translations use modern language and idioms to try and capture the essence of the text. The Living Bible would be an example of a Paraphrased translation. In a thought for thought translation, translators take a look at the whole sentence then attempt to translate it as a unit. The Bible is a book unlike any other book. It is, in fact, a whole library of books, all bound together in one volume. These individual books were written by many different authors over an extended period of time. What makes the Bible so unique, though, is that its many human authors were all inspired by its one Divine AuthorGod Himself! The Greek word for inspired means God-breathed. These words that carry Gods breath are words that can change and transform our lives. 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us that all of Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness .

If we want to understand who God is, what His purposes are, and how He has made Himself known to the human race, we cannot afford to ignore the Bible.

How does the truth revealed here affect my relationship with God and others?

Although life can be full of chaos and hardships, we can rest in knowing that we can safe and secure because God is in us like a peaceful river in the heart of Jerusalem. He might not calm the situation, but we can experience true peace even in the midst of disorder.

Our role is to trust Him and respond to the sound of His voice.

Verse 10 is in present tense meaning that today, God tells us to be still and know that He is God. The term be still actually means to cease striving which as I mentioned in my Scroll post is a great mental picture of how I often struggle to solve my own problems instead of allowing the very Creator of the Universe to deliver me.

One thing the commentary mentioned was that it took Jerusalem a couple years to rebuild but afterward they experienced a magnificent harvest. It made me think about how Gods trials might require a waiting period but we can be sure that HE WILL deliver and preserve His people.

This is a fabulous Psalm to read where your world seems to be falling apart.

I will apply this passage to my daily life by: realizing that although my life might seem like it is full of chaos, I can be still in the midst of it because God resides in me like the calm river among Jerusalem. There may be a wait involved but God WILL deliver me from whatever comes my way. I can remember this too shall pass and He will have victory, restoring me as only He can.

Application: What Does This Text Mean For Me

Now that weve observed and interpreted what the passage has to say, its time to talk about what it means for us. How do we apply what we just learned to everyday life?

We dont study the Bible just to gain knowledge. We study to gain knowledge so we know how to live our lives in light of what weve learned.

Go back to your questions from the beginning and ask them again in light of what youve learned, and apply it to our context today.

Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

Based on what youve learned, what does this passage mean for you? If youve uncovered truth youve not known or understood before, what does it mean for your life, priorities, and decisions now that you do understand it?

Honest application of the text requires these kinds of questions and the wrestling of ideas when truth causes conflict. It might be tempting to stop at the interpretation phase, but youll be selling yourself and Scripture short if you do.

Take the time to dive into the application step. Its worth it.
