Look Through Bible Commentaries

Another exercise that can be incredibly helpful as youre learning how to study the Bible for beginners is reading through various Bible commentaries on the key verses youre reading.

Basically, Bible commentaries are big books where really smart theologians explain a lot of background on the text and what it means in the original language. This is where you can find some of the words in the original Greek or Hebrew, along with expanded word definitions that help you really capture what the full extent of what the author was trying to convey.

You can , borrow them from your library, or just do your research online on Bible Hub while youre looking up various verse translations. Just scroll down and youll find a bunch you can read and compare.

This is SO helpful when youre first learning how to study the Bible for beginners, because theyre easily accessible and free!

For example, one of the most helpful commentaries I looked up was on Exodus 20:3, which says You shall have no other gods before me.

At first reading, the text looks pretty straightforward. God is telling Moses that the Israelites should put God first on their list of priorities. But this isnt actually what the text means at all.

Instead, if you , particularly the second half of Ellicotts Commentary for English Readers, youll see that God wasnt asking to be our FIRST god. Hes asking to be our ONLY God. Thats a pretty big difference!

Commands Of Jesus For Children

9 totally awesome ways to read the Bible with your kids in ...

I love how Susan suggests actionable ways to teach these traits. For instance, on week 25 the trait is obedience. Referencing Jesus offer to exchange our heavy burdens for His lighter yoke, she suggests role-playing with a sack of potatoes. She draws the character trait of obedience from Jesus command to:

Bring to him all of our troubles, our sins, our problems, and hand them over to Himnd then He says, In exchange I will give you rest and peace’. Matthew 11:28

Im on a quest.

And if you are intentionally teaching the Bible in your home, then you are on this quest as well.

We are on a quest against Biblical Illiteracy.

The book of Judges shows us what happens when parents are not on the front lines of spiritual warfare and fighting for Biblical knowledge. In fact, Judges 2:10 tells us that as soon as Joshua and the other leaders died, there arose a generation of people who did not know the Lord.

It only took ONE GENERATION.

The Bible does not give parents a perfect formula straight from God that will allow us to raise a family so that all of our children choose to live for the Lord. However, the scriptures do give us commands and guidelines which help us lead our kids to walk in the ways of faith. And hopefully, our children will decide on their own to follow the Lord.

For an example of these commands and guidelines, if you have your Bible nearby, look up Deuteronomy 6:4-7 and read it carefully.

Tips For Teaching Better Bible Classes

by Wes | Sep 28, 2016 | Church

Whether youre teaching teenagers, adults, women, or men, I know you want your Bible class to be as effective as it can possibly be. I know you want people to see the relevance of Scripture. I know you want people to learn and to grow. But sometimes, lets face it, its hard to know how to do that. Its hard to know how to teach an effective Bible class. So I want to share with you a few things Ive found helpful when teaching Bible classes. I hope you find these helpful as well.

1. Pray.

Dont underestimate the role prayer plays in teaching an effective Bible class. This is Gods word youre teaching and Gods people to whom youre teaching it. Ask God for His help.

You could pray for your class what Paul prayed for the church in Ephesus . It could sound something like this:

Pray when youre preparing your lesson. Pray when youve finished preparing. Pray at the beginning of your class. Pray at the end of your class. The more you invoke God in prayer, the more effective your class will be.

2. Know the text.

You dont have to know everything there is to know about Scripture when you teach a Bible class, but you do have to know the text you are teaching. Read through it as many times as possible. Read it in multiple translations. Read various commentaries on the text. When you go into class, try your very best to know that piece of Scripture forwards and backwards.

3. Have a point.

4. Outline what youre going to say.

The Lord Our God Is One

We are to teach our kids DOCTRINAL TRUTH. They need to know the basics of a foundation of faith. Going to church, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, or Christian schools are great supplements, but Gods word says that Truth begins with parents. So we parents need to know the Truth well enough to be able to teach them to our kids. We have to be studying the Bible, not just reading it.

Now Heres Some Exciting News

Did you like our Noah and the laundry basket example? Are you looking for MORE ways to help your toddler begin to learn basic biblical truths? Then you are going to love my series on my blog called Play Through the Bible!

Play Through the Bible takes tots and preschoolers through an entire childrens Bible, covering 25 of the major stories of the Bible. It meets tots right where they are with super simple crafts, hands-on activities, and kid friendly discussions.

Heres a sneak peek at how The Series is set up:

  • It is designed with busy parents in mind.
  • Each lesson is simple, easy to prepare, doesnt require tons of crazy craft supplies, and doesnt have to take a ton of time to do. All while being set up perfectly for how toddlers learn best!
  • The series walks through an entire childrens Bible, following God story from beginning to end.

I knew I wanted to create this study because, although there are a ton of great resources out there, I was having a hard time finding something that was designed specifically for toddlers being taught at home by their parents. There are a lot of great resources for individual stories, or church preschool curriculum, but not a lot that would take a toddler through the entire Bible, without requiring me to take little bits from here and there around the internet.

So, if youve found yourself in a similar spot, wondering which way is the best to go with regard to imparting basic biblical truths to your littlest learner, this study is for you.

Know That You Dont Need To Have All The Answers

7 Tips on Teaching the Bible to Your Children at Home

Relax and know that you dont need to have all the answers. My four-year-old son asked one evening, Daddy, if Eve had eaten from the tree but not Adam, would all people have fallen? What a great question! But it didnt feel like it at the time, because I wasnt ready. I didnt know the answer on the spot. And you know what? That was alright. His faith wasnt dashed, his spiritual life wasnt stunted, and his respect for me wasnt diminished. I could simply say, I dont know, son. That is a fabulous question. Can I do some research and answer your question later this week? His little four-year-old mind was thinking through an issue I never had. That is a blessing in disguise! You dont have to know everythingno parent does, no matter who they are. We are all theologians in process. Each of us seeks to grow in biblical knowledge. And many times, our children press us towards that growth.

God gifted his word to his people. It is a means of grace, not a burden.

Why I Write Fun Bible Lessons For Kids

I teach my own children and I teach Awana Bible . Because it is so hard to find Biblically-based lessons for a broad age span, I design and teach my own lessons. They can easily be done once a week at home or in a Sunday School classroom. Many of the lessons are 30-45 minutes in length, but can easily be made shorter for younger children.

Have your children gather together the necessary items, or go to the store together to buy what you need. When working through a lesson, have your strong reader read the scripture and then have your other children retell the story. Some are more detailed than others. Some are more exciting than others, but all of these fun Bible lessons come straight from scripture, whether Im telling the story in my own words or if I have the Bible open and I read passages.

A main objective I focus on is to teach children how to apply the truth that is learned. I also want kids to understand that every Bible story happened to real people in real locations. Tying in archeological finds helps bring the Bible to life!
