What Does The Bible Say About The Great Commission

To The End Of The Age

What does the Bible say is the Great Commission?

So lets go back for just a moment to the Great Commission in Matthew 28. Those words Go therefore and make disciples of all nations are addressed to the eleven apostles. We see that in verse 16. Its the eleven who are gathered.

God mysteriously and miraculously and wonderfully calls his frontier emissaries.

But the clue that Jesus intends for the command not just to be for the eleven, but to some group outliving the eleven, comes at the end of verse 20. The warrant, the ground, the support for the command is the promise behold, I am with you. And then he tells how long this warrant is going to last: to the end of the age.

So the task will last as long as God promises to help it last: Im going to be with you in this task to the end of the age.

So the question is and every generation of believers has to ask this who picks up the mantle in the following centuries? Its not enough to say either every individual does or the whole church does. Thats not enough because neither of those answers helps decide whos going to do it.

Verses That Encourage Christians To Make Disciples

by Mission Partners For Christ | Jan 9, 2018 | Make a difference |

Do you know that nothing you do in this life will ever matter unless it is about loving God and loving the people He has made?Francis Chan

God gave us The Great Commission found in Matthew 28:19-20: Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

We know it. We memorize it. And we do Bible studies on the topic of making disciples. But lets face itwhen we stand before God, do you think He will cheer us on for only memorizing this scripture, learning this scripture in different languages and dissecting it word for word while in a Bible study? No. Sure, He will be glad we did those things, but He will ultimately judge us on how we LIVED his commandment. The video below by Francis Chan compares Gods commands to us and relates them to our commands of our children. We care about the ACTION not the understanding or comprehension of our command. God feels the same.

God gave us more verses with the same message as well!

We take the Great Commission very seriously and have provided ways for YOU to take action through Missions Partners! One way to take action is to read the following Biblical verses that support Matthew 28:19-20 and to do what they say!

The Great Commission Of Jesus Christ

The Great Commission of Christ occurs in the Gospel books, when Jesus appeared to His disciples after His Resurrection and commanded them to “make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Furthermore, Christ says to His disciples, “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

“Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Amen.

The Great Commission of Christ also appears in and Luke 24:44-49.

The Great Commission In The Gospels

The full text of the most familiar version of the Great Commission is recorded in Matthew 28:16-20 . But it is also found in each of the Gospel texts.

Although each version varies, these passages record an encounter of Jesus with his disciples after the resurrection. In each instance, Jesus sends his followers out with specific instructions. He uses commands such as “go, teach, baptize, forgive, and make.”

The Gospel of Mark 16:15-18 reads:

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons they will speak in new tongues they will pick up snakes with their hands and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

The Gospel of Luke 24:44-49 says:

The Gospel of John 20:19-23 states:

This verse in the book of Acts 1:8 is also part of the Great Commission:

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

What Is The Great Commission

The Great Commission

Just before he ascended to heaven, Jesus gathered his disciples together one last time to give them his final instructions. What he told them to do after his departure made them a part of God’s great salvation plan for man. They were not the first ones, however, to receive such a commission from God.

Righteous men and women, long before the first century A.D., had laid the groundwork for the New Testament’s great commission to begin with a running start .

The words of the Great Commission, spoken by Christ, are found primary in Matthew 28:18 – 20, Mark 16:15 – 18 and Luke 24:47. Matthew’s account, of all the gospels, is the most complete. Jesus first reveals that the Father has given him all authority in the universe to carry out the remaining phases of his plan . He then states the main part of the commission he is giving them.

The heart of the great commission the disciples received was to take the Gospel message into all nations .

Jesus then tells his disciples to teach others all the things he taught them and finally that he will be with them until his return. Jesus’ statements, however, beg yet another question. What, exactly, IS the gospel message?

In general, the Gospel or ‘good news’ is a message revealing why God created mankind. Man’s great and wonderful destiny, if he is willing to accept it, is to live forever and have a relationship with God as a member of his family, with the same perfect, sinless character as He possesses.

The Great Commission Matters Because Of When It Was Given

The Great Commission is not only important because of its content. It is also important because of its timing in Biblical history.

The entire narrative of Scripture is building to point to the coming Messiah. Jesuss life is building to point to His death, burial, and resurrection. Over Jesus ministry, he talked about many things to teach believers about living a faithful life.

Just as His messages before the resurrection are intentional, the focus of His message after the resurrection is intentional. Over his life, he had taught his followers how to be disciples, and now he is instructing them what to do as His disciples.

This is a pinnacle point in Biblical history, as Jesus commissions His disciples and all believers to take on His ministry on earth. By this, the church age had begun leading to the spreading of the Gospel to every nation.

% Of Churchgoers Dont Know Of The Great Commission

Matthew 28:18-20 is the most well-known biblical record of what is commonly referred to extra-biblically as the Great Commission. But despite the significance of these and other verses that call Christians to go and make disciples of all nations, a surprising proportion of churchgoing Christians in the U.S. are generally unaware of these famous words from Jesus.

In partnership with Seed Company, Barna conducted a study of the U.S. Churchs ideas about missions, social justice, Bible translation and other aspects of spreading the gospel around the world, available now in the new report Translating the Great Commission. When asked if they had previously heard of the Great Commission, half of U.S. churchgoers say they do not know this term. It would be reassuring to assume that the other half who know the term are also actually familiar with the passage known by this name, but that proportion is low . Meanwhile, the Great Commission does ring a bell for one in four , though they cant remember what it is. Six percent of churchgoers are simply not sure whether they have heard this term the Great Commission before.

Is The Great Commission For Me My Pastor Or The Disciples

The Great Commission

At the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus gave his final instructions to his discipleswhich we know as the Great Commission. You might be wondering: do these instructions apply to me, too? After all, not everyone did what the apostles did.

To answer that question, let’s take a look at what Jesus instructed the disciples to do, and then we’ll see what other Christians in the Bible said and did later.

Small Groups Are Fishing Pools For New Disciples

Small groups attract new Christians as well as those who have been believers for years but have never been discipled. Even non-Christians are attracted to small groups because they are seeking truth and/or fellowship. This is true for Bible studies, mothers groups, or other small groups. What a great opportunity to help someone grow in her relationship with Jesus and in his truth!

Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, arrived in Ephesus. He was an eloquent speaker, well versed in the scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and with great enthusiasm he spoke and taught accurately the facts about Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak out fearlessly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the way of God to him more accurately.

This is a great example of someone in leadership listening to what is being shared in a group setting, realizing that the person sharing is lacking some beneficial information, and personally discipling that person so he can influence others more effectively. How important do you think it was that the couple invited Apollos to a private place for discussion?!

Think About It:

What did someone use to establish you as a new believer?

Think About It:

Why is it important to come alongside someone in your group who is struggling or lacking truth in her life rather than assuming she will catch up just by being in the group?

The Greatest Commission Proclaimed Throughout The Whole World Throughout All Ages

The heavens declare the glory of God the skies proclaim the work of his hands.Day after day they pour forth speech night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words no sound is heard from them.Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other nothing is deprived of its warmth.

Are you obeying the greatest commission?

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.

Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each others faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all.

Nina Gunter’s Response Was:

“Dealing with believers’ lack of passion for the lost. Peopleare so focused on themselves that they lack passion for the lost.

“The single greatest challenge is reviving that passion for the lost. Historically, thechurch has grown most when it ignited in people a desire to reach the lost.”

“The church will soon die . . .”

“The day the Church of the Nazarene loses her interest in foreign missions and rescuework , she may run awhile on her reputation, but she will soon die asdead as any formal, ecclesiastical church in the world. May God keep this vision before us” — A. J. Vallery, superintendent of Bethany Training Home, Memphis, TN,June 16, 1920

Bible passages on caring for the poor Bible verses calling for world evangelism

Becoming a Global Christian

“If I truly seek to have the heart of Jesus, I will seek to think the way He thinks, not justabout myself and my ministry, but about the world. I will seek to feel what He feels, to cry overwhat He cries over, to laugh about what He laughs about, to see what He sees, every day I live. Iwill not just sing songs in worship services about honoring Him in all I do. I will seek to provemy faith and commitment to the vision of Jesus with action. That’s the message of James2:18.

Bible Meaning And Commentary Of The Great Commission

What does the Bible say about the mission of the church?

He now solemnly commissioned the apostles and his ministers to go forth among all nations. The salvation they were to preach, is a common salvation whoever will, let him come, and take the benefit all are welcome to Christ Jesus. Christianity is the religion of a sinner who applies for salvation from deserved wrath and from sin he applies to the mercy of the Father, through the atonement of the incarnate Son, and by the sanctification of the Holy Spirit, and gives up himself to be the worshipper and servant of God, as the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, three Persons but one God, in all his ordinances and commandments. Baptism is an outward sign of that inward washing, or sanctification of the Spirit, which seals and evidences the believer’s justification. Let us examine ourselves, whether we really possess the inward and spiritual grace of a death unto sin, and a new birth unto righteousness, by which those who were the children of wrath become the children of God. Believers shall have the constant presence of their Lord always all days, every day.

What Is The Great Commission According To The Bible

The Great Commission refers to several passages in the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus Christ urges his apostles to make disciples of all the nations and baptize them. The Great Commission, therefore, is usually interpreted to mean spreading the Christian message and converting others to Christianity.

Be Ready To Share Christ With Unbelievers

As you pay attention to your group members, you should recognize those who have yet to trust Christ.

But they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony

This verse tells us that we have two very powerful tools to introduce others to Jesus that cannot be stopped. We have the gospel facts and the story of our own experience validating the power of the gospel. People can reject the facts of the gospel and even its logic, but it is very hard to argue with someone about her experience of the gospel.

Every Jesus follower needs to have these two tools to fulfill your purpose 1) a way to share the gospel facts and 2) a readiness to shareyour own story. Thats intentionally partnering with the Holy Spirit in bringing others to Christ.
