What Day Does The Bible Say Is The Sabbath

Lords Day The Sabbath Of The Lord

What does the bible say about the Sabbath?

But isnt Sunday the Lords Day?

We find the phrase Lords day in Revelation 1:10

I was in the Spirit on the Lords day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,

Revelation 1:10 KJV

There is no single evidence in the Bible to sustain this claim.

Instead, we can find in Isaiah 58:13 the Lords day.

Isaiah 58:13 KJV

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

The Sabbath, the 7th day is the Lords Day, and not Sunday, the 1st day of the week.

Praise God for the Bible, it explains itself, we can find all the answers in it.

Was The Sabbath Made For Man Or Only For The Jewish People

Many people think that the Sabbath was only for the Jewish people.

You may hear the term Jewish Sabbath, but this is incorrect as there is no such term in the Bible.

The Sabbath was made for man, for everyone, and not only for the Jewish people.

And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

The Sabbath is a blessing from God, meant to give us joy and peace, and to have fellowship with Him, and with other like-minded believers.

The Sabbath is a memorial that He is the Creator, and it is made for everyone.

The Sabbath is for everyone.

Did The Apostles Kept The Sabbath On The 7th Day

Acts 17:2 KJV

And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

Acts 18:4 KJV

And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

Acts 16:13 KJV

And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

What about the Gentiles? Did they also worship on the Sabbath?

Acts 13:42,44 KJV

And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

Apostles gathering on the first day of the week

What about the gathering of the apostles from Acts 20:7? Doesnt that mean that the Sabbath was changed from Saturday to Sunday?

Acts 20:7 KJV

And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow and continued his speech until midnight.

Here is talking about Saturday evening, after the sunset, when the first day of the week started.

Luke counts the time in the classic Jewish style of the Bible.

The day always starts in the evening, at the sunset. , .

The apostles were breaking bread every day.

Nowhere in the New Testament do we find a law that the Sabbath was changed.

God does not change.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Jesus’ View Of The Sabbath

When we come over to the New Testament we find that in the intervening centuries the rabbis have added a lot of details to the sabbath command and have missed the spirit of it as a wonderful gift for man’s good. So Jesus slams head on into these traditions with a very different view than the one shared by the Pharisees. Let’s look at this in Matthew 12:112.

At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the sabbath his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck ears of grain and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath.” He said to them, “Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the law how on the sabbath the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless? I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.”

What Does The Bible Say About Following Jesus Christ? in 2020

Many have asked the question, my calendar begins on Monday, doesnt that make Sunday the seventh day of the week? It is true that many calendars begin on Monday, but some calendars around the world begin on Friday, Saturday or Sunday as well. The answer to this can be found by studying the linguistics or meaning of each days name, rather than only looking at the order of the days printed on paper. Any human can change the order of a printed calendar, but it is a lot harder to change every language in the world.Browse: Was the real Sabbath day lost because of a calendar change?

Consider the Greek language in which the New Testament was written. According to the Bible, the day before the Sabbath was called the preparation day or paraskeue” in the Greek language. Even today, thousands of years later, the sixth day of the week, called “Friday” in the English calendar, is still called Paraskeue” in the modern Greek calendar. Therefore the day that comes after Friday is the Sabbath day.

The Sabbath Day Or The Lords Day Which

One man esteemeth one day above another another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor and do all thy work but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day wherefore, the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The Sabbath day is Saturday. It is the seventh day of the week according to our calendar. Furthermore, the Sabbath day has never been changed to Sunday.

The present-day controversy over which day of the week Christians should observe hinges upon a false premise, which resulted in a warped and distorted viewpoint of the real meaning of the Sabbath day as found in the Word of God. Many Christians have a woeful misconception of why the church has always observed the first day of the week. Nothing but abysmal ignorance has permitted the protagonists of the Sabbath day to traffic in their legalistic system.

Basis in Exodus Ceremonial

For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day wherefore, the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Who made the Sabbath? It’s in the Bible, Genesis 2:1-2, NIV. “By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing so on the seventh day He rested from all His work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done.”

God As The Source Of Salvation

It would be a mistake to conclude from these two texts that the only blessings we should focus on during our sabbath observance were the blessings of creation. Deuteronomy 5 gives us a second version of the Ten Commandments. Here the basis of the sabbath observance is different. Verse 15:

You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out thence with a mighty hand and an outstreched arm therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day.

In other words the mighty hand and the outstreched arm of God were not wearied by the work of creation. They are full of strength. God’s rest was not for recuperation, but for exultation. Now the same God has shown his power not just to create but also to save. So the focus of the sabbath is on God not only as the source of creation, but also as the source of salvation. “Your God brought you up out of the land of Egypt . . . THEREFORE he commanded you to keep the sabbath day.” One day of rest in every seven, kept holy to the Lord, reminds us and shows the world that GOD is our creator and our delivererwe did not make ourselves, we cannot sustain or save ourselves without his grace. Be still and know that he is God.

The Night Is Far Spent

How Does The Bible Say to Keep The Sabbath? | Biblical Answers to Common Questions

Apostle Shaul writing in the book of Romans gives us more evidence that a day did not begin in the dark, but began at dawn. Examine this verse carefully:

Rom 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

  • The night is far spent means it is almost morning.
  • The day is at hand tells us a day did not begin the evening before but begins at dawn after night ends .
  • In other words, the night is darkness and day begins at dawn or daylight, which is the end of the night, not the evening before.

The early Christian Church, which started in Jerusalem, prospered and spread to Asia Minor near Israel, to Macedonia and even to Rome. In this process, there was something inevitablethat was a conflict with the Roman religion.

The Roman imperial family abhorred the Jews who believed in Judaism. The Romans believed in many different gods, and from their polytheistic view of religion, it was hard to understand the Jews who believed in the one and only GodJehovah, and the Jews were reluctant to follow the Roman orders using their religion as an excuse.

To the Romans, Christianity seemed to be a sect of Judaism because it was also a monotheistic religion Christians believed in Jesus as the Savior, and kept the seventh day as the Sabbath just as the Jews did. So, the people of the Church in Rome were unable to avoid persecution from the Romans, and they made efforts to inform them of the difference between Christianity and Judaism. In this process, they came to accept Sunday, which the Romans observed, as the day of worship.

Much later in history, the israelites, including the tribe of judah , knew which day was the sabbath and that it began âat evenâ as the preparation day was ending and the seventh day was about to begin. These days, we no longer have shul klappers, but there are some cities in israel that play jewish music, or a blast a siren on the citywide emergency broadcast system, announcing both the beginning and the end of the 18 minutes. Remembering To Keep The Sabbath Day Holy

Does The Bible Say The Sabbath Changed From Saturday To Sunday

Pin by Jaden DeGraw on Yeshua, Commandments, Hebrews, and Sabbath ...

Thats a great question, and I love the implication of the question, namely, that the Sabbath did change. Part of the problem we face in our time is a lot of people think the Sabbath is entirely passé.

One place Id begin is with Revelation 1:10 where John says, I was in the Spirit on the Lords day.

For those who think that the Sabbath is completely ended with the coming of Jesus and that all days are alike in the new covenant , they misuse a statement of Paul. The fact that John says there is a Lords day in the new covenant shows there is a day set apart in a unique way for the Lord. And so thats a place to begin.

I think Colossians chapter 2, which talks about the Sabbath being past, shows that the old Sabbaththe Sabbaths literally in Greek are passed away. And then we look at the Apostolic practice of frequently meeting on the first day, and we begin to see this pattern emerging from the New Testament: that whereas Jews rested on the seventh day, Christians rest and worship on the first day.

    The Sabbath As A Sign

What did the Lord say at the exodus from Egypt?

Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today for the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be still.

Exodus 31:1213 stresses again the truth that the sabbath signifies our utter reliance on God’s grace.

And the Lord said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, You shall keep my sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you.”

The sabbath is a sign. It points to a truth that we are never to forget. The truth is that God has sanctified us. He has chosen us and set us apart and worked to make us distinct among the peoples of the earth.
