When a man retires at sixty-five, studies show his chances of having a fatal heart attack immediately double. Our minds and bodies werent made to be shut down. Nowhere in Scripture do we see God calling healthy people to stop working. So before we think about saving for retirement, we should reexamine our thinking about retirement itself. How much of what we think and assume is based on our culture, and how much is really based on Gods Word and the leading of His Holy Spirit?
Of course, its perfectly legitimate to work without pay. You might donate labor to ministries and volunteer. But as long as God has us in this world, He has work for us to do. The hours may be shorter, the work different, the pay lower or nonexistent. But He doesnt want us to take still-productive minds and bodies and permanently lay them on a beach, lose them on a golf course, or lock them in a dark living room watching game shows.
Is saving large amounts of money for retirement as essential as were constantly told? Paul commended the Macedonian believers, not for clinging to the little they had, but for giving beyond their means .

Work Is A Gift Of God
It can be helpful for us to understand that work is not the result of sin, but part of our Creators design for living. We know this because Adam was instructed to work in the garden before he and Eve sinned and brought corruption to the universe. The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. The aspect of work that took on new meaning after Adam and Eves fall is that it became toilsome and hard because of Gods curse upon the land. As with many other things in creation, work itself is good, but sin has made it hard and painful.;
Note that Adams original labor was not for money, nor an immediate requirement for food, nor clothing, nor shelter. Money did not exist. Adam had no need of clothing because he had no shame, and God provided food on the trees of the garden. We see that God supplied Adams every need apart from Adams work, including love and companionship. Gods purpose for Adams work was about more than meeting his physical needs. After sin, part of Gods curse upon the ground was that humanity would labor hard to provide for its physical needs. Even so, the other benefits and purposes of work remain, and we should remember them when considering retirement from a career that provided for those needs. While those other benefits are unclear from Genesis, we see them elsewhere in the Bible as well as through observation of peoples cognitive, emotional, and physical health relating to their work.
Wise Investing Is Right And Good
Investing isnt stock trading. Its not about betting the farm on a hot tip from your brother-in-law. Such speculating amounts to gambling on future events, and most of the time you lose more than you gain .
Investing is actually commended if done wisely. Its about putting money into real businesses that employ people and deliver products or services to customers. Hopefully, the companies we invest in do well and provide a return commensurate with our investment .
Most of us would do well to invest in low-cost, passively managed, mutual and exchange-traded index funds instead of individual stocks and bonds. The best example of this principle of saving for the future is the story in Genesis, where God reveals Pharaoh’s dream to Joseph. After interpreting the dream and delivering the bad news that a famine was coming, Joseph tells Pharaoh what he should do to save Egypt from certain destruction.
Genesis 41:34-36: – Let Pharaoh proceed to appoint overseers over the land and take one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt during the seven plentiful years. And let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it.
