Bible Verses About Worry

What Does the Bible Say about Money and Finances – CrossTalk Ep. 11

Matthew 6:25-26Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Hebrews 13:6 So we say with confidence,The Lord is my helper I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Psalm 56:3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.Back to top index

Debt Can Really Weigh You Down

Proverbs 22:7 The rich rule over the poor and the borrower is servant to the lender.

Weve heard this verse over and over, but it still rings true. If youre getting out of debt, theres a good chance you probably dont ever want to get back into debt again! Take the wisdom from this verse and be careful whenever you approach the opportunity to borrow.

Why Do We Loan Money To Broke People

When someone close is in need of help, its only natural to want to pitch in. Why is that? There are several reasons:

  • We want to help. Its natural to want to help someone we care about when theyre in a tough situation. When someone is in need and we can help, it makes us feel good.
  • Well feel guilty if we say no. You know if you dont help someone who is struggling that it will weigh heavily on your conscience.
  • You want to maintain the relationship. You feel like you cant just refuse to help. After all, this is someone close to you. Not loaning money could cause tension in the relationship because you werent willing to be helpful in their time of need.

All of these reasons show that you want the best for that person and for the relationship. But what happens when things dont work out as planned? What if they dont pay back the loan ?

Worse yet, what if they make no effort to pay it back and then weeks or months later theyre showing you their expensive new clothes or the latest gadget they just bought? Do you think the relationship would change due to the resentment of not getting paid back?

Money Is A Terrible Master

Gods Money

In fact, money can provoke such all-consuming desire in us that Jesus describes it as a would-be master of our lives: No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.31

Seems a bit extreme, doesnt it? Can money really rule us? And who said anything about serving moneywhat does that even mean?

Well, consider what Jesus says just a few verses earlier: Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.32 This concept is key. Money can control us by ruling over our hearts and dominating our desires. We invest in what we love and we love what we invest in. The more you strive to own money, the more money will own you.

The Apostle Paul makes a similar point when he writes, Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.33 Idolatry is the worship of false gods. How, then, does covetousness equal idolatry? Because it involves directing the total devotion intended to be given only to God toward something that isnt God. When you covet money or possessions, you cant be satisfied without them. Youre effectively saying that God himself isnt as satisfying as the thing you wantand obtaining that thing is more important than obeying or pursing God.

To Whom Should I Give I Should Give To Destitute Family Members To Spiritual Ministries And To The Needy

Were all inundated with so many requests for giving. How do we sort them out and determine which ones to give to and which ones to ignore? I cant answer that question completely, but I can give some guidelines:

A. Give to destitute family members.

This is your first priority in giving, since to fail to do it makes you worse than an unbeliever . Your own refers to your immediate family: children, aged parents, grandparents, brothers, and sisters. This does not include a lazy, irresponsible family member who doesnt work and who squanders money on alcohol and drugs . A widow indeed refers to a godly woman without any family members to look after her. The church must help these, but widows with families were to be cared for by their families. It is not right to deprive your own family of the necessities of life in order to give to others.

B. Give to spiritual ministries.

Since the local church is Gods ordained means for evangelism and discipleship, it ought to be next in priority for giving after destitute family members are cared for. Those who labor at preaching the Word are worthy of financial remuneration . The church is also to support workers sent out to evangelize and plant new churches in places where the gospel has not penetrated .

You need to be wise about giving to Christian organizations. Here are some questions you can ask to get maximum effectiveness from your giving:

C. Give to needy persons.

Bible Verse About Giving Cheerfully

When you give do you give cheerfully? Many people give with a grudging heart. Their heart doesnt align with their words. You might remember a time in your life when you offered someone something, but you did it to be polite. In your mind, you were hoping that they declined your offer. This can happen for something as simple as sharing food. We can be so stingy with stuff that we crave. Are you being nice or kind?

There are some people in our lives who we know are struggling, but they are too prideful to say they need something and even if we do offer they are too prideful to take it or they dont want to seem like a burden. Sometimes we just have to freely give it to them. A kind person just gives without even having to offer. A nice person can be kind, but sometimes they are just being polite.

5. Proverbs 23:7 for he is the kind of person who is always thinking about the cost. Eat and drink, he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

6. Deuteronomy 15:10 You shall generously give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all your undertakings.

What Happens To A Greedy Person

Their inability to empathise, their lack of genuine interest in the ideas and feelings of others, and their unwillingness to take personal responsibility for their behaviour and actions makes them very difficult people to be with. They are never satisfied. Greedy people look at the world as a zero-sum game.

Ignoring Instructions Leads To Shame

3 Surprising Things Jesus Said About Money

Proverbs 13:18 He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.

If youre reading this, youre one step ahead! Seeking out financial wisdom is the first step in becoming a better manager of your money. The second step is to put the words into practice. Ignoring the advice you hear is a surefire way to repeat financial mistakes of others.

God Does Bless People With More Than Enough

We must never give because we think God will give us more. No! This should not be the reason behind our giving. Often giving requires us to live beneath our means. However, I noticed that God does indeed keep those with a generous heart financially secure because they are trusting Him with their finances. Also, God does bless people with the talent of giving. He gives them a desire to freely give and He blesses them with more than enough to help those in need.

Bible Verses About Contentment

Philippians 4:11-13 Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

1 Timothy 6:6-12 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

2 Cor. 12:9-10And He has said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weaknessTherefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christs sake for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Bible Verses That Will Help You Leave A Legacy

3 Minute Read | September 23, 2021

Christian financial expert Howard Dayton has said that the Bible references money and possessions 2,350 times. Thats a lot. Its more than Jesus talked about love, and more than He talked about heaven and hell combined.

Its almost as if God knew we would need lots of direction and clarity on the whole money and stuff issue. Ha! Does He know us well, or what?

So whats in those 2,350 verses? Way more than we have time to talk about here. But I do want to highlight three of my favorites. These are the verses I turn to when I need a little guidance in my own financial decisions. I hope youll glean as much wisdom from them as I have.

Give For The Right Reasons

Bible Verses About Money: What Does The Bible Have To Say ...

I want to start by saying that once you put your trust in Christ you are free. You can do whatever you want with your money. However, realize this. All things come from God. Everything that you are and everything that you have belongs to God. One of the greatest things that has increased my generosity was realizing that God has provided for me not to hoard but to honor Him with my finances. He provides for me to be a blessing to others. Realizing this has allowed me to truly trust in the Lord. Its not my money. Its Gods money! Everything belongs to Him.

1. James 1:17 Every generous act of giving and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father who made the heavenly lights, in whom there is no inconsistency or shifting shadow.

With The Proper Attitude

Using a strictly legal principle of giving prompts wrangling over questions like: Is it 10 percent of gross income or net income? Of take-home pay only? Before or after insurance and retirement deductions? Instead, we are to give what we decide in our hearts to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver . Therefore some better questions might be: How can I better manage my affairs so that I can give more? Where can I give that will best serve Gods purposes? Now that Ive given what money I can, what else can I give?

The New Testament doesnt contain instructions for Christians regarding the tithe, but there are many admonitions concerning giving.

Giving should be an act of stewardship. God is the source of everything we have , so in a sense we own nothing but are only stewards of what is rightfully Gods Giving should be an act of worship Giving should be generous

Setting a standard of giving, such as tithing, can help us do what we believe in our hearts to be right even if our feelings should waver. But if a Christian decides to tithe, it should be a free and joyous decision, not a legalistic one.

Money Principle #1: Give Money Dont Serve It

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him.Luke 14:1314

When Jesus says, you cannot serve God and money, the word used for money is specifically mammon. Just as wisdom is personified throughout the Bible, Jesus personifies money here as another entity that vies for our allegiance. Whats interesting here is that the Pharisees were infected with this love of money, and it caused them to immediately discount what Jesus was saying.

Its important that we periodically do a personal wellness check in regards to our attitudes about money and possessions. One of the sure signs that there might be a problem is related to how quickly we dismiss the idea that there might be a problem.
