Bible Verses About Giving To The Poor

What Does The Bible Say About Blessing the Poor? (Giving Part 3)

The wicked borrows and does not pay back,But the righteous is gracious and gives.

He who gives to the poor will never want,But he who shuts his eyes will have many curses.

So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

John Answered Anyone Who Has Two Shirts Should Share With The One Who Has None And Anyone Who Has Food Should Do The Same

God commands us to share what we have and in this verse, there are examples of food and clothing. He asks that we share what we have and give to those that we come across that do not have the same as us.

This is also a reminder that we shouldnt live with excess material possessions. It is easy to get caught up in a world where we constantly want the best and newest things in life and often end up accumulating more than we need. This is a great reminder that if we have more than we need that we should share with others.

Proclaiming Good News To The Poor

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”

Jesus would eventually kick off His ministry by standing up in the synagogue and claiming these words as a prophecy about His ministry. The fact that Jesus would choose these words from the whole Old Testament should tell us just how important this mission is to Him. God’s love is demonstrated in His tender care toward those who are broken, struggling, and hurting.

God Values Our Offerings Differently Than Men Do

  • In God’s eyes, the value of the offering is not determined by its amount. The passage says that the wealthy gave large amounts, but the widow’s “fraction of a penny” was of much higher value because she gave all that she had. It was a costly sacrifice. Notice that Jesus did not say she put in more than any of the others; he said she put in more than all the others.

Biblical Basis For Giving To The Poor

What does the Bible have to say about poverty and giving to the poor? I want to have a God-honoring attitude on this matter, but to be honest, as a new Christian I’ve been confused by some of the differing opinions and ideas I’ve heard. Do you consider this kind of activity to be an important part of the Christian life?

On this point the message of the Bible is clear: God cares deeply about the poor and expects His people to do the same. Lets take a closer look at the scriptural teaching in this regard.

Well begin with the Old Testament. A mechanism designed specifically to provide for the needs of the poor was built into the Mosaic Law in the form of regulations governing the reaping and gleaning of fields: When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the Lord . Concern for the needy was in fact regarded as part and parcel of Israels religious life and an aspect of worship: He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, declares Proverbs 14:31, but he who honors Him has mercy on the needy. This is why the prophets consistently railed against the rich and powerful who were guilty of plundering the poor and grinding their faces .

Bible Verses About Putting Your Hope In Your Wealth

Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

Matthew 19:21-26 Jesus answered, If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.; When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, Who then can be saved? Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. Peter answered him, We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?; Jesus said to them, I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first

When You Give To The Poor Do It In Secret

So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

All They Asked Was That We Should Continue To Remember The Poor The Very Thing I Had Been Eager To Do All Along

    Even if you are unable to give to the poor through money, food, or shelter, do not feel as though you are unable to enrich their lives in any way. We are also called to remember the poor and serve them with our time.;

This can include volunteering help at shelters, helping with preparing or serving food. As well as volunteering in schools or orphanages in poor communities who need extra help or expertise in certain areas. This is as valuable as making monetary donations.

Matthew : 1921 Investing In Future Treasure

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

In keeping with some of these Old Testament passages, Jesus challenges us with a choice: accumulate stuff here , or use it in such a generous way that weâre investing it in the coming Kingdom.

When we are generous with the things that come through our life, we are actually sending it ahead, and weâll be compensated by God.

The beauty in this passage is found in Jesusâ promise that as we invest our resources in Godâs Kingdom, our heart will also be pulled in that direction. If you ever find yourself praying that God would awaken a desire in your heart for Kingdom things, try practicing generosity for a couple months.
