Celebrate The Blessings Of Others

Bible Verses About Jealousy | Bible Verses About Jealousy in Relationships |

This is a wonderful spiritual practice for freeing us from envy and insecurity. Be excited for the good fortune, the blessings of others. If you can learn to say, Yay! when your friends and neighbors experience blessings, the chances are that youll be next. It is not an easy mindset to learn, but with practice you can master it. We have so much less envy when we learn to be genuinely happy for others. The Bible has something to say about this too:

Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.

You Can Overcome Jealousy And Insecurity

According to the Bible, you can and must break free from envy. It is a destructive emotion that can cause us to do things we would not normally do. Here are some words from James 3:14-16 about this state of mind:

But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, dont brag and deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where envy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil.

Examples of the devastating effects of envy are in scripture as we think of stories such as Cain killing his brother Abel , Josephs brothers selling him into slavery , or King Saul pursuing David all over various deserts trying to kill him .

It is so important to get to a spiritual state of not yearning for other peoples lives or their belongings, and of being utterly content with our own life.

Here are 7 ways to free yourself from envy:

What The Bible Says About Jealousy

Scriptures talk about both God’s righteous jealousy and the human sinful kind. To explain God’s version, Bible authors often likened it to the sense of love and longing people in feel toward each other. The idea that Almighty God feels this way about us can be overwhelming. Our best response to this gift is to accept it, and to worship Him.

In the Old Testament books, the mention of God’s jealousy sometimes came with a caution for His people not to reject Him.

“‘He is a holy God he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you” .

Other passages share His promise of restoration for those who repent after turning away from Him.

“‘Even now,’ declares the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.’ Then the Lord was jealous for his land and took pity on his people” .

Conversely, several of the Apostle Paul’s letters in the New Testament address the quality of man’s jealousy. Rather than a force tempered by love that is meant to bring reconciliation, human jealousy causes hurt and division.

Paul considered jealousy to be one of a set of attitudes that arise from letting ourselves become more focused on worldly things than on God. He also recognized it as a tool the enemy uses to distort believers’ thoughts and destroy their unity. And he always called it a sinful behavior.

What Does The Bible Say About Envy

Envy is a different emotion than jealousy, even though the two are very close to the same. When we feel envious, we start to want and covet the things we dont have .

Feelings of jealousy invokes revenge, but envy inspires us to act out in other ways that are not in line with a fulfilled life. Envy makes us desire, and sometimes it can make us want to build success on the backs of other people. If we go back to Proverbs, it tells us that a heart at peace is life for the body, but envy is what rots the bones.

The meaning of this passage is not just literal, but also refers to the effect that envy could have on our spirit. An envious soul cannot live their life in full light of the Lord.

Ecclesiastes is another part of the Bible that talks about envy and the impact it has. This specific passage talks about achievements that are the result of sheer envy and it called as meaningless as chasing after the wind.

The Bible tells us that envy is not a useful emotion that will bring us forward in life, or closer to fulfilment in God.

Gratefulness Drives Envy Away

The Bible says, A joyful heart is good medicine! One of the attitudes that most sets us up for joy and an absence of envy is gratefulness. When we have gratitude, we look at what we have with appreciation and stop dwelling on what we dont have. Consequently, we have more positive emotions. What we have is treasured. The health of grateful people is often much better as are their relationships.

Lets face it. Marketing is a cleverly used tool in this age. Television ads, online ads, and so on, can stir up our longing for what we dont have. Looking at friends, neighbors, and strangers posts online can make us feel that everyone elses life is a fairy tale dream of happy vacations and large unified families. We know only too well our own struggles. But believe me, those with lovely Instagram posts have heartache, trials, medical problems, and rebellious kids too. Remember much is not what it seems on the surface.

We recently watched the miniseries The Crown on Netflix and were struck repeatedly by the heartache and struggles of the very wealthy royal family of Queen Elizabeth of England living in multiple castles with much splendor. Their heartache behind the scenes has often been great. Dont be fooled. The Bible says:

Better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife. Some who seem so much better off than you, perhaps, would give anything to lead your life. Think about that.

Jealousy & Envy Are Liars

Feelings of jealousy and envy put little cracks in our personal satisfaction with life. They poke and whisper that we aren’t happy with what God has given usthat what we have isn’t enough. And, yes, sometimes it does feel that way. That’s just human nature. But those aren’t feelings we should dwell upon, because they’ll only produce more darkness and eat away at our contentment.

God has unimaginable good planned for you, and He isn’t going anywhere . Take the focus off selfish desires and jealousy and turn it toward serving others and finding ways to love as Jesus loves. When we put others first, our hearts begin to shift away from selfishness and toward self-LESS-ness. No, being selfless isn’t the way of the world, but…that’s not we’re about, is it?

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will ishis good, pleasing and perfect will.”Romans 12:2

People Who Are Obsessed With Jealous Thoughts

Usually they are the ones with thoughts of infidelity and immorality so they think that all people are like this, including their spouses so naturally they accuse their spouses of these actions and thoughts, even to the point of hysteria. How many virtuous women have been unjustly accused all of their lives of infidelity or immoral thoughts by their spouses just because he has a dirty mind?

It happened once that there was a man who was evil, controlled by lust, an alcoholic who came home so drunk one night that he fell asleep on the steps leading to the door. He never made it in the house. His wife, being used to such behavior from him , slept all night without him, woke up, made breakfast, and started to take the kids to school. She tried to open the door but could not because it was blocked by her husband sleeping off the alcohol from the night before. In order not to upset him even more she politely said . . .

Please dear husband, allow me to open the door so that I can take the kids to school. Her husbands reply go away you old prostitute, where were you, all night, last night?

Unfortunately, this happens all to frequently in many families where one of the spouses is unfaithful. The unfaithful one is the jealous one who creates crisis after crisis because of unjustified jealousy. In other words, the pot calling the kettle black.

Types Of Jealousy In The Bible

The Bible defines four different types of love in the Greek translations.

Stoge, Philia, Eros and Agape. Each type of love the Bible mentions is reserved for a different type of love we feel. Storge is empathetic towards people, while Philia is the love between close friends. Eros is the love we feel in romance, and Agape is unconditional, undying love that God can provide us.

Just like there are different types of love to think about, there are also different types of jealousy throughout the Bible.

Jealousy can be aimed at desire for someones life or something they have. But jealousy can also happen in relationships and friendships.

The Bible distinguishes between jealousy and envy as two separate emotions.

The dictionary definitions of each jealousy and envy makes it easier to see why.

Envy means to desire someone elses advantage, whether it is being envious of their life, or envious of their car. Jealousy, by comparison, means to be apprehensive of rivalship.

Jealousy comes from ego, when we do not want to be bettered or try to keep up with what others have. The Bible also goes on to show us that if you have Gods love, there is no need to be jealous or envious of any material things.

Overcoming Jealousy In Your Marriage

Are you a jealous spouse, or are you suffering from your mates jealous behavior? No matter on which side of this dilemma you find yourself this publication will greatly help you. First, I would like to address the jealous spouse and attempt to explain why you are jealous and how to deal with this problem. Second, I would like to encourage the spouse who must deal with the jealousy of their mate. There are always two sides to any issue and jealousy is no different. If you are reading this publication right now, I know you are probably thoroughly frustrated regarding this issue. There are solutions to this problem! But, first you must understand what causes jealousy, and what Gods Word declares is the answer to this problem.

Are you the jealous spouse?

Men and women can also have a godly jealousy toward another individual. This truth was revealed when Paul said to the Corinthian church, For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ . Therefore, it is only natural that your spouse would want you to remain completely faithful to him or her. But, what is so grievous about human jealousy is that it usually crosses the line by attempting to force a person to love or be faithful. God will never do that in His jealousy. In fact, it is impossible to force anyone to love you or be faithful. Love and faithfulness must be chosen by a persons own free will.

Is Jealousy A ‘deadly Sin’

In the Catholic church and within some other denominations, there is a list of seven deadly sins. These are: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth. These can be compared to the seven heavenly virtues, which are prudence, justice, temperance, courage , faith, hope, and charity.

While jealousy is one of the famous seven deadly sins, this list of sins does not exist as a comprehensive list in one passage of Scripture. Rather, it was a list condensed by Pope Gregory I in the sixth century. In Proverbs, there is a list of six things the Lord hates, haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers . While many of these behaviors can be driven by jealousy, it is not directly addressed here.

Such lists of sinful behavior exist in several of the epistles as well, where Paul will list things God hates or ungodly characteristics, and contrast them with things God loves, and godly traits. An example would include Galatians 5:19-21 compared with Galatians 5:22-23, which contrast the works of the flesh with the fruits of the spirit. However, jealousy is not listed as an unpardonable sin in the Bible. For those struggling with jealousy, as with all sins, there is grace through Jesus Christ.
