What Moses Said About Tithing

The Truth About Tithing 10% [Biblical Generosity]

In the second year of the Exodus, Moses informed the Israelites that they would be giving a tenth of their seed crops, fruit trees, and every tenth animal to the new Tabernacle. These instructions were Godâs commands and not just suggestions or best practices.

Itâs critical to recognize that tithing was central to Godâs law. Israelites didnât wait to feel inspired to tithe, they were expected to titheâand on top of that, they were encouraged to give freewill offerings.

Tithing Verses In The New Testament

There are plenty of verses about tithing in the Old Testament and a lot fewer in the New Testament. So it is true that tithing isnt talked about nearly as much in the New Testament as the Old Testament.

Personally, I dont believe that in any way nullifies the value of it as a practice.

Under the New Covenant, our salvation is not based upon our obedience to the 10 Commandments, but does that mean that we shouldnt still follow them? Are they suddenly of no value? I think the same can be said of tithing.

While you can debate all day long about whether or not it is a command for New Testament believers, I dont see any reason why it would not still provide a blessing just like it did in the Old Covenant.

Are Christians Required To Tithe

The short answer is no, Christians arent required to tithe. The Law of Moses mandated the tithe to support the Levites in their priestly service and those in need among the foreigners, orphans and widows . Since Christs sacrifice of himself removed the need for a Levitical priesthood, the principal purpose for the Old Testament tithe is gone. But the New Testament says quite a lot about giving.

Believers are to give in the following manner:

Jesus Endorsed The Tithe

In Matthew 23:23 and Luke 11:42 Jesus referred to tithing as something that should not be neglected

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spicesmint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the lawjustice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

So if you have been wondering what Jesus said about tithing or if tithe is in the New Testament, you have it right there in Luke 11:42.

What Should Determine The Amount We Give

What does the Bible say about tithing?

When we feel compelled to give based on an external standard, the heart is cut out of the gift. Such giving is a matter of works, not grace. On the other hand, discipline helps us with what we know to be right. Choosing a standard of giving can help us do what we believe in our hearts to be right, even if our temporary feelings should waver.

The apostle Paul summed up the New Testament standard of giving in 2 Corinthians 9:6 7 when he said,Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Limiting ourselves to a rigid 10 percent standard of tithing can cause us to miss the fundamental principle behind biblical generosity. Gods liberality is the basis for his peoples openhanded, bighearted responses. In fact, we are called to willingly offer 20, 30 or even 100 percent if that is what the Lord should require of us.

Many Christians have adopted a system called 10 10 80, which is to give 10 percent of their total income, save 10 percent and live on 80 percent. These percentages arent mandated in the Bible, but the principle as a whole is both biblical and practical.

God Values Our Offerings Differently Than Men Do

  • In God’s eyes, the value of the offering is not determined by its amount. The passage says that the wealthy gave large amounts, but the widow’s “fraction of a penny” was of much higher value because she gave all that she had. It was a costly sacrifice. Notice that Jesus did not say she put in more than any of the others he said she put in more than all the others.
  • Should You Tithe On Your Tax Refund

Technically, if you are tithing on your gross income rather than net income, then you would have already tithed on that income, and it is simply money coming back to you.

But I truly believe that we cant go wrong giving more. We cannot outgive God.

So Whats This Mean For Us

In the end, tithing wasnât something Israel did in the same way we mindlessly toss a gratuity down with our bill at a restaurant. It was an intentional practice that God used to teach Israel about his sovereign ownership of everything. Instead of being consumers of their blessings, they had to stop and think through just how much blessing they had.

    Do Most Christians Tithe

A lot of the confusion around the topic of whether Christians tithe comes from the terminology. Throughout the Old Testament, Israelites were expected to give 10 percent of their resources to God. That tithe or âtenth partâ was a requirement of the law. And thatâs already a little misleading, because when you factor in all of their required giving, Israelites actually gave around 23 percent of their income.

Today, many Christians would say that tithing was part of the law that Christians are no longer required to participate in. This doesnât mean that they donât believe that generous giving isnât necessary it means that they donât believe that Christians are required to give a specific percentage. In fact, some of these people would say that given the model of the early Christians, a tithe asks far too little of us.

The conversation gets a little messy when many Christians use the word âtithingâ to denote any sort of giving. Christians who have grown accustomed to thinking of all giving as tithing can struggle with this biblical concept. So itâs essential that weâre clear in our terminology.

We can give 3 percent, 5 percent, or 8 percent of our income to the church, but we canât tithe it. To tithe is to give 10 percent. The statistics around tithing indicate that fewer than one-quarter of any congregation tithes. And on average, Christians give around 2.5 percent of their income to churches. So in that sense, no, most Christians do not tithe.

    Giving As You Feel Lead

There are Christians out there today who feel like there is no exact obligation to giving and should happen more on a whim when they feel lead or something tugs on their heart.

Although this can seem like an okay idea, we as humans do not always walk in the spirit, sometimes we make decisions in the flesh.

Without a safeguard to keep us continually honoring God with our first fruits, we can easily fall into the trap of excusing ourselves when we dont give and fall into the habit of not giving.

We cannot trust our hearts on when to give to God. Scripture gives a good picture of our human condition and why we cannot trust ourselves.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick who can understand it?

    Jeremiah 17:9

With a set goal of giving in place, we can make sure we honor God and give back to him a percent of what is his even when we do not feel like it.

Without a commitment, there will be moments when it seems easier or more convenient to skip tithing. This happens especially in financially tight situations, it can seem like tithing is not possible but that is when we can trust God to provide.

When we dont know how it will work, we can let God work.

    What The Bible Says

Biblical Tithing Scriptures | Proof Christians Donât Have To Tithe | Verses On Giving

In the Old Testament, we see the Israelites tithed a tenth of all they had to God. When Christ came and fulfilled the old covenant, we as Christians had to decide what that means for us as we give back to the Church. We continue to see verses in the New Testament that help us understand tithing better.

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

    2 Corinthians 9:7

The heart behind giving is explained in 2 Corinthians. We do not give out of compulsion but with cheer in our hearts since we are simply giving back to God a percent of what he has given us.

Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches.

    Galatians 6:6

In Galatians, we see Paul telling the church we should share with the ones who teach us. We can see that although we are not commanded to give money to our pastor in this verse, Paul strongly suggests that as we are being taught to share with the teacher.

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.

    Proverbs 11:24

Proverbs, which is one of the wisdom books in the Bible suggests that those who give freely will be blessed and the opposite for those who do not give. This verse is not a promise but wisdom on giving.

Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce

    Proverbs 3:9

May God help us be humble as we tithe.

Discover The Bible Verse On Tithing 10 Percent KJV. Many Christians struggle with the issue of tithing. Also, some churches over-emphasize giving. Likewise, many Christians refuse to submit to the Biblical exhortations about making offerings to the Lord God Almighty. We should note that tithing/giving is intended to be a great joy and a blessing. However, it is rather sad as this is not often the case in the church today. Tithing is an Old Testament concept. The tithe was a clear and well-understood requirement of the Law in which the Israelites were to give 10 percent of the crops they grew and the livestock they raised to the tabernacle/temple . The Old Testament Law required multiple tithes one for the Levites, one for feast and temple use, and one for the poor inhabiting the land summing to about 23.3 percent.

Whats The Difference Between Tithes And Offerings

Like llamas and alpacas, tithes and offerings are grouped together a lot, but theyre definitely not the same thing. A tithe is a specific amount that you give first, and an offering is anything extra that you give beyond that.

After youve tithed and paid all your bills and expenses for the month, you can use any extra money in your budget to give even more! This can look like giving a cash offering to your church above and beyond your normal tithe, giving money to a charity you support, giving to a friend in need, or giving your time and skills by volunteering.

    Giving Is To Be Periodic

On the first day of every week

Paul writes to the Corinthian church, On the first day of every week . There is ample biblical evidence that the early church met weekly, on Sunday . Paul begins his instructions about giving, then, by noting that the Corinthian believers ought to give when they are gathered together on the first day of the week. Such giving would prevent a lack when funds were needed .

Of course, in our context, you may not be compensated weekly but even if you are paid on a biweekly or monthly basis, your giving could still be periodic.

Generous giving is a tangible expression of our love for God.

    What Is The Tithe

The word “tithe” comes from an Old English root meaning “one tenth.” It is the common English translation for the Old Testament Hebrew asar word group. The tithe was an offering of one’s agricultural income to the Lord as an expression of thanks and dedication. In the Old Testament agricultural economy, tithes were paid not in cash, gold or goods but in crops or livestock, for only the agricultural fruit of the promised land was to be tithednot other forms of income. Although today we commonly think of the tithe as “10 percent” as a result, apparently there are three tithes in the Old Testament, two every year and a third every third year, or an average of 23.3 percent of one’s annual produce from the land. There was also provision for freewill offerings and personal giving above and beyond the tithe, so that the tithe never stood alone. Tithes were given by the patriarchs Abraham and Jacob a system of tithes was instituted in the law of God given through Moses .

The idea of the tithe is still present in the New Testament , but it is never explicitly applied to believers. Instead, almost all Christians are called to more extravagant freewill giving in response to the gospel of the Lord Jesus, based on faith in God as Provider .
