Earlier, we saw in James 1:17 that every good gift and every perfect gift is from above. If a 10-year-old child asked for a powerful motorcycle to drive to school, would a loving parent give it to him? No, in reality it would be harmful to give a motorcycle to a 10-year-old. In a similar way, God may not give us a gift that could be to our detriment, but He would instead give us something helpful.
You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures . The word translated amiss in this passage is from the Greek word kakos, and it carries the connotation of asking improperly, wrongly . God will not grant a request that would carry us away from our relationship with Him.
Gods long-term plan for us may not be something we can see, at least in the short term. Though we can be assured that He has our best interest in mind and greatly desires to give us good gifts, we may not always receive the gift we expectbut the gift God gives will be one that is better for us.
Notice the experience that the apostle Paul encountered when faced with a physical ailment: Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me .

The Love Your Neighbor Bible Verse
Christ’s central command in the social arena was a rousing call that we actively seek to ease the suffering of others. To go above and beyond in our love for others. This is clearly seen in His command to “love your neighbor as yourself”. Really, this wasn’t entirely His command. He got it from the Jewish scriptures, from the Law of Moses:
Leviticus 19:18 – Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.”
But Christ changed the context of the command. In the context in Leviticus, it is more of a “negative” command, telling us what not to do. In Leviticus, “love your neighbor as yourself” is clearly given in the immediate context of refraining from actively harming someone: “do not seek revenge”. Perhaps Christ saw this “negative” context as insufficient, so He gave it a new, positive context. In Luke 10:27-37, Jesus agrees with a man that the greatest command toward our neighbor is that we love him/her as ourselves. But then the man asks, “who is my neighbor?” Jesus responds by telling the story of the “Good Samaritan”. In this story, a man goes out of his way to help a stranger who was robbed and beaten half to death. He spends a lot of time, effort, and even his money to make absolutely sure that the stranger will recover. He goes the extra mile.

Many great businesses have been built on this one biblical principle. In fact, J.C. Penny used just this one principle to start and grow his business into a thriving corporation. He once was quoted as having said, “I cannot remember a time when the Golden Rule was not my motto and precept, the torch that guided my footsteps.” The concept is to consider others first. Love And Fulfill The Law
There is no valid command but to love. Any religion or spiritual discipline, any philosophy or ethical system, which gives any other command, is thereby missing the point.
For Christ, there were two commands which summed up the whole divine law.
Luke 10:27 – “…Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and, Love your neighbor as yourself.
Although there is a different object of love in each of these commands, the action required by each of them is one and the same: to love. Elsewhere, Jesus even commands us to love our enemies. We are to love all living beings, all sentient things: divine, human, or other. In one vital sense, even the command to love God is a double reference to love. After all, “God is love” . So in a very real and important sense, to love God is to love Love itself: to be in love–heart, mind, and will–with the highest Embodiment of pure, divine Love. What a goal. This is the single, only goal of religion or spirituality. Any religion or doctrine that suggests another goal is empty noise. Any religious activities or pursuits which do not tend towards that goal are frivolous nonsense: “vanity of vanities.”
What Do You Choose
Many in our modern society espouse a general philosophy of looking out for the selffirst taking what you want and need, and considering others later. This is the way of get or takethe natural, selfish way of life characterized by getting for ourselves and putting me first.
Gods way is instead the give waythe way of giving, sharing and outgoing concern for others. Its the way of godly love. It is the way of the Golden Rule.
Lets look again at the Golden Rule as stated in Matthew 7:12: Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. The word therefore connects us directly back to the promises about asking, seeking and knocking in verses 7-11.

Immediately after Jesus says, So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them), he says, Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. These two verses were spoken by Jesus consecutively because He was making a point. If you arent practicing the golden rule, then you are walking through the wide gate. Please, if this is you, turn around and walk through the narrow gate instead. Christ never promised an easy life. In fact, He promised a hard life when following him. Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my names sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. Jesus also said, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Treating others how you want to be treated is hard, but that is why few find the narrow gate. Keep serving others. Christ modeled stewardship for us we need to follow it.
The Context Of The Golden Rule
The Golden Rule can be found in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 7:12. This famous quote by Jesus Christ actually begins in the context of verse 7, which says we can go to God for our needs and receive help from Him: Ask, and it will be given to you seek, and you will find knock, and it will be opened to you.
The next few verses elaborate on this thought. Just as a caring human father gives good gifts to his children, so, too, God gives good things to those who ask Him .
