Study 7 What Must I Do To Be Saved
GREAT QUESTIONS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT by Francis W. Dixon
As we approach this study we should read Acts 16:14-34, which records three conversion stories of: Lydia a slave girl and the jailor in the prison at Philippi . We learn from these incidents that the gospel is relevant to and adequate for all kinds and conditions of people. Lydia was quite different from the slave girl, and both were totally different from the jailor, yet the gospel met the needs of each . We also learn that Gods methods in seeking and saving men and women vary according to the people concerned. Presumably Lydia was an educated woman and her conversion was a quiet one. The jailor, on the other hand, was pretty tough and he was converted rather noisily! The slave girl had a great struggle before she was converted. To gain the full significance of the jailors question , it will help to notice the three stages in the process of his entrance into the Christian life.
The Lavishness Of Gods Grace
How can we know Gods grace without understanding our utter sinfulness, His justice, His holiness, and hatred toward sin? We deserve nothing and John 15:5 teaches that we can do nothing apart from Christ. Our every breath comes from Jesus Christ.
We often hear the Jews killed Jesus. or Christ killers. No! We killed Jesus. He died for our sins. Jesus was nailed to the tree for us. Jesus looked at us while we were in sin and said, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. He paid the price for us as our substitute.
I once heard someone say, its something that He has seen in me. What? He sees nothing good in you! Dont you realize that the Bible says that unbelievers are haters of God, at enmity with God, dead to sin and slaves to sin, blinded by Satan? Nothing good comes from within you. No one seeks or desires God. The heart and the mind are evil. Apart from Him we can do nothing.
Through Christ a dead man will live. That is grace. When we understand how far we were from the holy God of the universe then we can truly understand the phrase, God is love! God loves us. His grace is more powerful than all our sins. There is no chain that is so strong that it cannot be broken by the blood of Christ. On the cross He took away our shame.
6. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Who Then Can Be Saved
Matthew, Mark and Luke all tell of the rich young ruler that came to Jesus and asked what he would have to do to inherit eternal life. The Lord first pointed him toward the old law of Moses under which he was living. After having claimed his adherence to the things mentioned, he was told by the Lord that there was yet one thing he had to do. Based on the words of Marks account, it is easy to see what the Lord had seen in the man. He was trusting in his riches. Jesus then told him he would have to sell all that he had and give it to the poor. He said, For it is easier for a camel to go through a needles eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. . It was to this statement that the question was posed, Who then can be saved? . For the rich young ruler, he could, if he was willing to put his trust in God rather than his material riches. But, the question is a good one nevertheless. Who then can be saved? Following is somewhat a short list of those who can be saved. It is a short list because space would not allow coverage of all that could be said concerning the subject. However, these listed, if heeded, will lead one to the salvation they seek if they are seeking in honesty.
What Must One Do To Be Saved
37 Now when they heard this, they were acutely distressed and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, What should we do, brothers? 38 Peter said to them, Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself. 40 With many other words he testified and exhorted them saying, Save yourselves from this perverse generation! 41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added.1
Sirs What Must I Do To Be Saved
What did the jailer ask Paul and Silas?”What must I do to be saved?”
Was the jailer asking what he must do to be saved from physical death?Had that been the case, he wouldn’t have “brought them out” of their prison cell and risk their escape, which would have meant his own execution.
Then what was the jailer asking by “What must I do to be saved”?He was asking about being saved from something worse than physical death. God had opened his eyes to see that he needed to be saved from his sins, which would damn him to the everlasting fire of hell. He recognized that Paul and Silas could tell him about the antidote to his everlasting problem, and was willing to risk physical death for it.
According to Paul and Silas, what did the jailer have to do to be saved?”Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” .
How is that different today? It isn’t.
Did the jailer then lock Paul and Silas back in their prison cell? No, he risked their escape and his own death even more by taking them out of the prison to “his house” .
Why did he do that?He wanted “his family” to hear”the word of the Lord” with him.
Would you risk being killed to share the Gospel with your family?
What about being disowned, disliked or disrespected?

First Lets Examine The Problem Hell Is Real
There is a Christian cliché that states that God hates the sin and loves the sinner. While this statement does possess a modicum of truth, it is also misleading. God both loves and hates individuals themselves, not merely their disembodied actions. You may respond, I dont believe that. It really doesnt matter what you believe. What matters is whether or not it is true.
What does the Bible declare? Psalms 5:5 11:5 7:11 and Proverbs 6:16-19 teach that God does indeed hate and that He is angry with the wicked. It is not the disembodied sin that is going to be thrown into Hell, it is the sinner themselves. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
1. Revelation 14:10 they, too, will drink the wine of Gods fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.
Lesson : How To Be Saved
My subject is, How to be saved. When I was first trained in how to share my faith , I was instructed not to use words like saved or salvation, because to most people, they were meaningless religious jargon. Rather, I was told that I should focus on how Jesus can give us abundant life here and now. Tell people how Christ can give peace, joy, freedom from guilt, harmonious relationships, and other present blessings.
While the gospel does bring many wonderful present blessings, its main message is about being eternally saved or lost. In Romans 10, Paul uses salvation or saved in verses 1, 9, 10, and 13. The concept of salvation or being right before God permeates the entire chapter. Paul is still hammering home the same message that he has been preaching throughout the entire letter , that the only way to be right with God is through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, not by good works. You may ask, Why does Paul keep repeating this? The answer is, Because were all so prone to try to get saved by our own good works. We need this message hammered into our works-oriented brains!
Before we work through the text, let me emphasize the practical value of these verses: At this moment either you are saved or you are lost. There is no in between category. If you are saved, it means that if you died today, you would spend eternity with Jesus in heaven. If you are lost and died today, you would spend eternity in the torment of hell. Those are the only options.

Who Needs This New Birth
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God . Inspired by the Holy Spirit, the prophet Isaiah foretold the suffering of our Lord Jesus for the sins of mankind. He said, All we like sheep have gone astray we have turned every one to his own way . Jesus clearly told Nicodemus, a seeker of the truth, that one cannot see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. This spiritual birth is the work of the Holy Spirit. All who want to be saved need to experience this birth.
All who are weary and tired of their burden of sin are invited to come to Jesus and find forgiveness. Jesus invites: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light . Jesus suffered, shed his blood, and died on the cross for our sins: and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world .
Evidence Of Your Salvation
- You will rely upon Christ alone.
- You will love God more.
- You will have a greater sense of your sinfulness and your deep need for a Savior.
- You will confess your sins daily and grow in repentance.
- You will seek to be obedient to the Word of God.
- You will have new desires and affections for Christ.
- You will grow in your knowledge of the gospel and dependence upon Christ.
- You will separate from the ways of the world.
- You will desire to have fellowship with Christ and with other believers.
- You will grow and produce fruit, sometimes faster than others and sometimes way slower than others, but there will be growth.
- God will work in your life to conform you into the image of Christ.

Salvation In Christ Changes Your Relationship With Sin
Our generation appears to be blasé about the problem of sin. We do not consider its consequences seriously enough.
You would be surprised at how many people I talk to who said theyre saved because a pastor prayed for them. Some of the things I hear are absolutely horrifying. We dont understand the gospel and have watered it down to the point that many who think they are saved are not. Paul said, how could those who have died to sin still live in it? We hate correction. All we want to hear is grace, grace, grace, but Jesus preached on Hell more than any other issue in the Bible. God is holy, holy, holy. Understand that I am not preaching a works salvation. Im talking about evidence of your faith in Christ.
Is there evidence that the Holy Spirit is living in you and working in you? Do you think, I am under grace? or I can live like the devil? That is a lie from Hell. Have you ever heard someone say that Jesus is so forgiving that I can sin all I want? That type of thinking shows that they have an unregenerate heart. We have forgotten that the way to Heaven is narrow. Only a few will find it. Those who have been saved by Christ will not practice sin.
23. Jude 1:4 For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Convicting Work Of The Holy Spirit
True faith in Christ is preceded by the work of the Spirit as Jesus Himself described in John 16:7-11:
But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
Judgment is also defined as referring to the fact that sin was judged when Christ died on the cross, and Satan was condemned and now awaits the execution of Gods judgment. Obviously, many who are saved do not completely understand this doctrine, but, nevertheless, under compulsion of the Holy Spirit, turn to Christ in faith in order to be saved. The three aspects of the Spirits convicting the unsaved are that a person seeking salvation must understand the nature of sin in contrast to the righteousness of God, that God provides a righteousness which is by faith and is not earned or deserved, and that God has judged sin in Christ on the cross, including the condemnation of Satan. As we enter into salvation through faith in Christ, Christ becomes our sin-bearer. As John the Baptist expressed it, Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! .
The Jews On The Day Of Pentecost
Acts 2 recounts how the church was established on the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem. As this chapter opens, more than seven weeks had passed since Jesus had been crucified and raised from the dead. In the moments before He ascended, He had told His apostles to remain in Jerusalem until they received the power of the Holy Spirit .
They were in the city when Jews from around the world came to celebrate the Feast of Weeks . While the apostles were sitting together, there was a loud noise that sounded as if it were a violent wind. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign languages. The apostles were not the only ones who heard the noise. The people in the city heard it, too, and rushed together to find out what had happened. They were further bewildered when they heard the apostles speaking about the mighty works of God and doing so in the native tongues of the foreigners. The reaction in the crowd was divided. Some remained puzzled by what they were seeing and hearing. Others accused the apostles of being drunk.
