Your Eyes Will Impact Your Heart

The Bible tells us that we can sin with even just a glance. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart . If you think you can co-habit with your fiancé or boyfriend/girlfriend and not sleep together, youre probably mistaken. If you do manage to pull that off, youre probably not going to pull off this command in Matthew. If youre living together and constantly before each other in intimate settings, there will be lust intruding at some point. Its how were wired as humans. Dont be naïve and think youre the exception to how God created mankind. Avoid temptation, and dont move in together until youre married.

What The Bible Actually Says About Living Together Before Marriage

If we are to lovingly counsel someone in Gods grace, what does the Bible actually say about living together prior to marriage? There are no verses that explicitly use the word cohabitation . Instead, we can look at what God does mention.

In Genesis, when God is creating and ordering the world, He looks at His creation and says that it was good. You know what God said was not good? For man to be alone . So He created woman and the marriage covenant, saying, Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh, and that was good.

Dont let that escape you. When God was creating a perfect world, He counted marriage among the good and perfect things that he had made.

Then came the fall of man, and sin entered Gods perfect design. Satan offered a distortion of Gods good plan, seducing and tricking Adam and Eve into seeking wisdom on their own terms outside of Gods good and perfect plan.

Satan presented a counterfeit of Gods covenant. Thats ultimately what living together before marriage is a counterfeit instead of the perfect covenant of commitment God offered to His beloved creation.

As scholar Galena Rhoades writes, But by living together already, both parties have likely developed a thought pattern of what if this doesnt work out, thinking you could just move out and move on, which can undermine that sense of commitment that is essential to a thriving marriage.

The Hebrew verb aras, translated mnsteu in Greek, refers to Jewish marriage practice in which the groom contractually pays a bride-price to the brides father . According to Old Testament scholar Douglas Stuart, This was the final step in the courtship process, virtually equivalent in legal status to the wedding ceremony.2 According to the Mishnah Ketubbot 5.2, the betrothal would last a year, with the bride remaining in the home of her father. Recalling the legal texts in Deuteronomy mentioned earlier plus the equation of Davids betrothal to Michal as marriage , we see that under Jewish law, a betrothed woman was considered to be married.

Is Sleeping In The Same Bed A Sin If You Dont Live Together

Again, while this action isn’t necessarily a sin it is definitely a near occasion of sin, which is something every Catholic is called to avoid. And, as we mentioned above, while sharing a bed does not guarantee sexual intercourse is taking place…everyone understands what it means to share a bed with someone of the opposite sex! And, that is something that should be saved for marriage.

We Are To Avoid Sexual Sin Including Having Sex While Living Together Without Being Married

Is Living Together Before Marriage A Sin?

The Bible also makes it clear that we are not to engage in sexual immorality or fornication.

Gods will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 NLT

God intended for sex to be enjoyed between a husband and wife in marriage, so couples having sex outside of marriage would be considered a sin.

Even if you are living together and planning on getting married, having sex before marriage is still a sin and not pleasing to God.

What Does The Bible Say About Immorality

Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.

Our enemy is on the prowl. Hes out to get people on his team and hes aggressively pursuing those who are already #TeamJesus. Baptism grants you an indwelling measure of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit and sin cannot exist in the same place. Your body is the temple where the Holy Spirit resides. When you open yourself to sin the Holy Spirit is like Nah, I cant be here right now and *throws deuces*. You open yourself to sin and the punishment of sin to enter in because you have no spiritual protection left. You have to guard your heart and your mind and your eyes so if living with your intended before bands are in place breaks down your guards, then rethink that.

Does God Forgive Me For Repeating The Same Sin

What the Bible Says About Christians Living Together ...

If you seek forgiveness and do not intend to keep repeating the same sin, God forgives you. Even if it happens again, he forgives you. If you ask forgiveness but dont intend to stop the sin, your heart is not in the right place. He died so that the consequences of the sins we commit are paid for already.

Living Together Before Marriage Is An Offense Against Gods Law And Is An Injustice To Ones Partner

Gods original command in creation was that male and female should cleave to one another in covenantal partnership, that is, in marriage . A man shall leave father and mother, and become united to his wife, and they two shall become one flesh.

Our objection to living together before marriage is based upon the Biblical teaching that sexual activity outside of marriage is an offense against Gods Law. We are told in Ephesians 5:3 that there must not even be a hint of sexual immorality among Gods people.

The Bible has no direct teaching on what should be involved in a marriage ceremony, nor does it tell how the ceremony should be conducted to make it a valid transaction. However, marriage has always been a public event. There has always been a specific point at which persons were recognized as being married. The Bible has specific regulations about the sins of adultery and fornication. It is assumed that the community will know who is married and who is not married. Marriage is not a private affair. It takes place within the community. And the Christian is a member of a special communitythe Body of Christ. Our entire life is lived out as a member of this special community. In the wedding ceremony, the couple makes pledges in the presence of family, friends, the church, the state, and God. When this commitment has been expressed, then the man and woman are ready for physical consummation. This pattern is in harmony with the teaching found in Gods Word.

What Are Some Examples Of Unconditional Love

Love even when they show their flaws

True, unconditional love doesnt run away when things get tough. Someone who loves unconditionally not only loves the other person despite these flaws, but they also love them because of them. The easiest example is always immediate family, children being the prime example.

Cohabiting Hurts Your Witness

In the summer of our wedding, I picked up a second job as a shift supervisor at a restaurant to make some extra money for the ceremony. I remember one time when a new server I was training found out I was to be married in a couple months but wasnt living with my fiancée. He was astounded. He didnt understand why I would plan a marriage without first testing the relationship by living together. He was concerned that I was making a mistake and tried to persuade me to rethink the wedding.

My decision to live apart until marriage gave me an opportunity to share my faith with him. Jesus calls us to live differently than the rest of the world and in so doing to direct the world to him:

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Even if youre able to resist the temptation of sexual sin, if youre living with your partner, your friends will assume youre engaging in sex. When we wait to live together until were married, its a witness to our friends, family, and coworkers. It demonstrates that Christ is our King, and that what he says matters to us. Our life can offer a compelling reason to follow him.

Flee From Sexual Immorality

Should Couples Live Together before Marriage?

The Bible warns us to flee from sexual immortality. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body . The definition of flee is run away from a place or situation of danger. Its sort of difficult to run hard and fast from danger when its literally in your house and in front of you every day.

Is Cohabitation A Sin

Living together in itself is not a sin, but cohabitation is objected to by the Catholic Church because it disposes all couples who do live together before marriage to mortal sin , which in turn can be detrimental to our spiritual lives and relationship with Jesus Christ.

There are two values that sacramental marriage points spouses to: the good of one another, and the transmission of life. If two people are willingly choosing to live in a situation that allows them to actively fall into mortal sin, that is failing to practice one of the two values of marriage before their marriage even begins. It is not wrong that two people desire to fully and freely give themselves to another person the problem is that the desire becomes disordered in trying to merge a free and total gift with a partial and ultimately non-committal aspect of cohabitation.

In Theology of the Body, written by Pope John Paul II, three aspects of Jesus creation are held in high regard: the sacrament of marriage, the sacredness of sex, and human dignity of every person. By allowing sex to be part of your relationship outside of marriage, all three points are deeply disrespected at their worst and lazily neglected at their best.

We Find True Life In God’s Way

The Bible tells us that there is life in Gods way, not in worthless things. Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things and give me life in your ways . Its hard to turn your eyes away from sin when the temptation is co-habiting your bedroom. If your fiancé or girlfriend/boyfriend is getting dressed in the morning in the same bedroom or bathroom, how can you look away? How can you guard your eyes and purity when the temptation is ever before you? Rather, wait for marriage, when the closeness and intimacy of shared quarters is a blessing and a gift, rather than a sin or struggle.
