Jesus and the Legion of Demons // Mark 5:1-20 (Mark Ep. 12)

A Legion of Demons In one of the most extraordinary demon encounters in the Bible, Jesus doesn’t just face one demon, but thousands. When Jesus and the other disciples got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him When Jesus asked the demon what its name was, the demon replied, My name is Legion… for we are many . In common usage, a legion was the largest unit in the Roman army. At that time, a legion averaged about 5,000 fighting men, though it could have thousands more or fewer Legion is a demon or group of demons, particularly those in two of three versions of the exorcism of the Gerasene demoniac, an account in the New Testament of an incident in which Jesus performs an exorcism And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. Who Is Legion In The Bible

Legion in the Bible is a man possessed by demons, his encounter with Jesus changed his life. Like so many others that Jesus seeks out to save, he was out of hope. He was beyond the help of human hands, no one could save him, no one could set him free- until Jesus stepped foot on that shore.

We dont know much of Legion in the Bibles back story, or what happened to bring him to this place. We dont know how many people had tried to help him, or where his family has ended up. Instead, the Bible introduces us to a tortured man desperate for a savior.

The Hidden Meaning Of 666 Nobodys Talking About

So here it is: the meaning of 666 that is hiding in plain sight. Yet no one is talking about it.

Bible scholar John Walvoord says in The Prophecy Knowledge Handbook This beast claims to be God, and if that were the case, he should be 777. This passage, in effect, says, No, you are only 666. You are short of deity even though you were originally created in the image and likeness of God. Most of the speculation on the meaning of this number is without profit or theological significance.

In other words, we dont need to go around figuring out the numerical value of peoples names to speculate whether or not they are the Antichrist.

Many have pointed out that letters of the alphabet have a numerical meaning in languages like Hebrew and Greek, and so a name will have a numerical value.

Walvoord points out in that the real meaning of this verse is that a man is claiming to be God, but the real God isnt impressed at all.

God is -in effect- mocking the Beast. The Beast -a created being- is even fooling himself. He believes his own lies and actually thinks hes become God.

So when this verse tells the wise to calculate the number of the beast and that it is this number 666, it just means the wise should be aware that the beast really is just another pretender.

666 isnt a formula. When the Antichrist is revealed, he will be different from what most people expect.

Location Of The Story

The with the location of Gadara and Gerasa.

John Dominic Crossan believes the story may be considered a parable of anti-Roman resistance. This would explain why the Gospels variously situate the story in Gadara, Gerasa and Gergesa: All three would be disguises for Caesarea, the location he postulates for the actual events behind the story.

Other authors give the ruins of Umm Qais as the location of Gadara.Based upon the Gospel accounts, the location of the miracle had to have a nearby port, tombs for the men to live in, an area for pigs to graze, a nearby city to which the men could flee, and most importantly, a steep bank for the herd to rush down.

What Will Happen To Demons

When Jesus encountered a demon-possessed man during his earthly ministry, the demons asked, Have you come here to torment us before the time? . Demons understand something of their eternal destiny, The phrase, before the time could mean that they feared premature expulsion from the man, but it probably meant premature judgment to hell. The destiny of demons can be summarized in three phases of confinement.

Present Confinement

Some demons are currently confined. John described the release of some of these demons in Revelation 9 during the Great Tribulation, when they will come from the bottomless pit to afflict the people. Jude identified another group of demons whom God he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day . Apparently the crime of these angels was so horrendous that they will never again experience any degree of liberty .

Millennial Confinement

During the Great Tribulation, there are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. . As demons are in part responsible for the battle of Armageddon, it is reasonable to expect they would be prevented from making war during the millennial reign of Christ.

Eternal Confinement

A man will only go to hell by choice, his choice as expressed by his rejection of Christ. Demons are apparently aware that someday they will be eternally confined to the lake of fire .

How Do You Kill A Demon In Legion

Strategy. Demon Legions should be killed as quickly as possible. Rain of Fire is recommended, especially during the earlier waves. Any Mage Tower in the front is helpful for damaging them before they can make duplicates, though not as useful in the back of the map since the larger hordes of Legions will overwhelm them.

How Many Legions Of Angels Did Jesus Have

The Lord reminded Peter that, if He needed help, He could have God send more than twelve legions of angels . That might total 60,000 angels, but the exact number wasnt the point Jesus was making.

A Legion of Demons. In one of the most extraordinary demon encounters in the Bible, Jesus doesnt just face one demon, but thousands. When Jesus and the other disciples got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.

The number of pigs killed was about two thousand. That detail suggests that Legion was composed of about two thousand demons. The large number of demons may account for the afflicted mans untamable nature and great strengthstrength that was no match for God, of course.

They are not at rest until they can find a place to call home, and apparently this man has thousands of demons in him. We know because the word legion is a number that could be anywhere between three and six thousand. Imagine the strength that this man must have had!

The Lord reminded Peter that, if He needed help, He could have God send more than twelve legions of angels . That might total 60,000 angels, but the exact number wasnt the point Jesus was making.

The Name Legion In The Bible

The name Legion occurs twice in the Bible, but in one context. Both and Luke tell the harrowing story of a demon possessed man who wandered the tombs of the Gerasenes and note that the word for tomb, , is really the word for memorial this man was “living among memories” and doubtlessly suffered from severe psychological trauma. He was subsequently continuously crying out and cutting himself with stones. When he saw Jesus he identified him as the Son of the Most High God. When Jesus asked the man to say his name, he said, “My name is Legion because we are many” .

Jesus famously sent the demonic legion into the herd of swine, which promptly destroyed itself. Mark uses the word , legion, one more time as he speaks of the man who had had the legion .

What Can We Learn From Legion In The Bible

Legion

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, Quiet! Be still! Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. NIV

Jesus rebuked the storm. He doesnt rebuke nature for acting as it should, for working as it was created to- and yet this time He does. You are important because of your storm. If He went through a storm to save this man, to restore him, to seek him out like a lost lamb and He went to Calvary for you, how important must you be to Him? Grace did what chains could never do. Mercy did what judgment could never do. Love set Legion in the Bible free. Love set you free. How valuable you are to Him!

Spiritual Editorial: The Story Of ‘legion’

  • The Rev. Bradley Walmer

Luke 8:26-39 tells the story of Jesus and a distressed man. His name is Legion. Hed lost his real name, his given name, his family name a long time ago. Now hes known only by a label: Legion.

A legion is a Roman military term referring to a unit of 4 6 thousand soldiers. When he says his name is Legion, it is because he is battling an army of demons. There is a legion of psychological and emotional issues with which he struggles each day.

Initially, the communitys response to Legion is to control him by restraining him. When that doesnt work, they send him away to live in the wilds, among the tombs, banished from all human contact. Out of sight. Out of mind. Problem solved.

Sure, there was a time when Legion experienced love and companionship, when he sat on his grandmothers lap and played with friends. But not anymore now he lives alone, and no one wants to be around him.

The Rev. Bradley Walmer, Pastor, New Covenant United Church of Christ.

But, everything changes when Jesus shows up. Legion begs Jesus for help, and he responds with compassion. He doesnt send Legion away he sends the demons away.

In a much better state of mind, Legion sits at Jesus feet and listens to him teach. Now fully clothed, he asks Jesus if he can become one of his disciples.

How Many Times Is 666 Mentioned In The Bible

Legion – David Defeats the Time Eaters (Acts of God)

666 is directly mentioned twice in the Bible. The most well-known instance is in Revelation 13:18 as the number of the beast or Antichrist.

The other famous mention is Solomons annual salary of 666talents of gold in the book of 1 Kings 10:14-15.

A more subtle reference to 666 is made in regard to Goliath, who defied the armies of Israel and was defeated by David. Goliath stood a full 6 cubits in height.

He had 6 pieces of armor, and his spears head weighed 600 shekels. See 1 Samuel 17:4-7.

Legion For We Are Many

In the Bible, the name “Legion” refers to the horde of demons possessing the Gerasene demoniac:

9And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he said to Him, “My name is Legion for we are many.”

Jesus promptly commands the demons to leave this crazed man, and as soon as they do he is restored to sanity. For you see, unlike the “angels” in the movie, real demons are evil, and they are subject to the authority of Jesus Christ.

This movie is full of biblical fallacies and twisting of Scripture, something Satan has done from the time of Adam and Eve. Satan tried to twist Scripture with Jesus in the desert temptation, but Jesus would have none of it, fighting the devil off with what Ephesians 6:17 calls the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God.

The danger in this movie, and in Satan’s temptation and trickery, is that we find ourselves rooting for the angel that is in rebellion against God. Later in the movie, that angel is restored, as if he convinced God that he was wrong in his anger and that Michael was right in his rebellion. Michael says to Gabriel, “You gave him what he asked for. I gave him what he needed.” This is blasphemous — and it is ridiculous if you know anything about what the Bible reveals of the nature of God and His angels.

We must remember, God is good, and loving, and holy, and all-powerful. Angels, demons and mankind are created beings — and we are subject to His sovereignty.

Grasp This Facing Demons

Facing Demons

Do you have a fear of demons? In one sense you should fear the effects their powerful temptations can have upon you. Respect their power by running from their influence and temptations if they become too enticing to you .

Do NOT fall into their demonic trap – you’ll end up living a pathetic, non-spiritual life. In another sense, you should not have a fear of demons, because they can only kill your body. They’ll frighten you, lie to you, and influence you to sin but, they cannot throw you into hell. But, God can. And, God will. Concerning his Father, Jesus warns you, “Fear Him!” You must create a healthy, respectful, real fear of God in your life, for this reason… God can destroy both your body and your soul. Jesus said so . Heed his warning.Do NOT be afraid of demons, because Christians have the power and authority to make them stand down. Put on your demon armor, i.e. the whole armor of God, so you can fight against these demons .

Falling into a demon’s trap leaves you dazed and confused, separated from God’s good graces. If you chose failure, you must come to your senses, repent of your deeds, and re-approach Jesus with a humble, mercy-seeking heart. Return to him, begging him to forgive you and allow you to return to a powerful, Spirit-filled life.
