The benefits of reading the Bible. While there are numerous ways that reading the Bible brings us closer to God and benefits us daily.

If we claim to follow Christ, then its important for us not only know the character of God but also how He has worked His plan through history. We should want this knowledge so that our lives can be more like Him and live according to his will.

It is important that we listen to God and His words. This way, not only can He help guide our lives but also teach us about Himself through the scriptures.

Jesus reminds us in John 17:17 that it is Gods word is truth.

Sanctify them in the truth your word is truth.

John 17:17

Here are a few benefits of reading the Bible that I keep close to my heart and serve as reminders for me to stay in the Word daily.

It Increases Your Level Of Discernment

The renowned nineteenth century revivalist Charles Spurgeon made a fascinating statement that reveals just how important discernment is. He said that discernment is not just knowing the difference between right and wrong, it is knowing the difference between right and almost right. This apt description does not just apply to false teaching, but to all matters of faith and life. The more we deliberately expose ourselves to Gods Word, the more His Word will be able take root in our lives. Here is truth: our level of discernment will be commensurate with our time spent in the study of his Word. Once again we read the words of the psalmist:

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you .

Benefits Of Reading The Bible: Fill Us With Hope

Do you need hope in your life? Me too.

God knew we would. So, He gave us our Living Hope in Jesus Christ.

There is nothing better! Being reminded of our Living Hope can be found daily reading the bible and spending time in Gods Word.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ for the dead. 1 Peter 1:3

Fill up with hope by spending time reading the bible.

It Reminds Us Of His Promises

The Bible is filled with Gods promises. Promise to never leave or forsake us. Promises to save us. Promises that He will be our rock, our refuge and stronghold. Promises never to destroy the earth again by flood. Of all of the benefits of reading the Bible, this is one of the most personal.

When we read the Bible and see so many of the promises of God, we are comforted to know how very much He loves us and will see us through.

in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began

Titus 1:2

The Bible Teaches Truth And Corrects Falsehoods

PPT

Its obvious that God is serious about wanting us to get into his word. Yet many take this command casually and allow themselves to be guided by the worlds ideas, not Gods. A passage in Hosea troubles me, for I have seen it fulfilled in the lives of many people I know.

My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.

Pilate, the Roman ruler who ordered the execution of Jesus, asked, What is truth? . Many people ask the same question today.

The Bible gives us the truth. Plus it corrects false teachings. For example, in many places in the New Testament we are warned against the false idea that we can earn our salvation. We are told, instead, that we are justified through faith, not works .

The Bible Transforms Us

When you read the Bible, you learn important information, but something else happens when you have an open heart. Reading and meditating on what you study actually changes your attitudes, motives, and emotions. It transforms you on the inside. It renews your mind.

Jesus answered, It is written: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Gods will ishis good, pleasing and perfect will.

What do you think?

9. How does the Bible transform us?

It Will Bless You When Its Principles Are Kept And Applied

The Word of God will never be able to accomplish its desired effect in our lives unless we apply to our lives what we have received. By default, not doing so causes us to be the dreaded hearers of the Word, and not doers . Rather we should continue to look into the Wordand that with purpose:

But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in itnot forgetting what they have heard, but doing itthey will be blessed in what they do .

In closing, how you view the Word of God will determine the place that it holds in your life. The Bible should not be consigned as just good literature, or a great read. It is not simply a book of short stories or even a history book of sorts. All of these ideas are far from the actual truth. The Bible is the unerring, infallible, unchanging, and ever living Word of God. The very same people who refer to God as the man upstairs, are the same people who refer to the Bible as the good book. But it is so much more!

These final words from the psalmist serve to show us all we need to understand about Gods Word and why we need to devote ourselves to its study:

Is this your heart? Lets remove every obstacle that prevents us from accomplishing this very undervalued component to our life in the Lord.

The Bible Tells Us How To Think Live And Love

[CSAP 527] Interpretation of Romans 8:1-11 – Walt Russell

The Bible, written long ago, is relevant today. It covers all areas of daily living, including marriage, parenting, communication, forgiveness, decision-making, finances and overcoming temptation.

We need Gods instructions, for we are exposed to many voices in the world, voices that in many cases give wrong information as well as a big thumbs up to immorality of every kind. Our exposure to the Internet, newspapers, magazines, books, teachers and professors, TV, movies, plays, and other influences have a major effect on our thoughts and opinions. We need Gods life-giving instructions.

Equipped To Stand In The Face Of Spiritual Warfare

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Eph. 6:17

The Word of God becomes your weapon as you stand in the face of lifes challenges and struggles. God has provided everything you need for your life as you pursue Him. As you stay connected to Him through His Word, youll be able to stand and persevere until the day that you stand before Him. All Scripture becomes available to you to overcome any discouragement, doubts, and fear that might come against you. God has made you more than a conqueror .

I wrote an in-depth study on how to put on the Armor of God. You can find it here: Put on the Whole Armor of God: What it Means & How to do It.

Sacred Scripture Is Filled With Encouragement

The Early Christians knew to look to the Scriptures to nourish their hope. The Psalms in the Old Testament speak of Gods powerful love and mercy. The book of Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament showcases the work of the Holy Spirit in the Church. Stories of our heroes show Gods work in the lives of believers. By reflecting on Gods past fidelity, recorded for our memory in the Scriptures, we can be filled with hope for the future.

Trust Your Spiritual Instincts

Just like you can trust the signals of your body for hunger, thirst, sleep, and exercise, you can trust your spiritual instincts too. This doesn’t mean that we should follow our feelings without critical reflection, but sometimes when we dont want to read, theres some pause or practice other than Scripture reading that could be valuable to engage in.

For me, it was encouragement from a mentor to turn my daily commute into time spent freely with God. It was a post-seminary season where I was positively stuffed with the Bible in three different languages, and reading it felt impossible, exhausting, and discouraging. It was so freeing to consecrate those rides, and I often found that phrases and passages of Scripture would come to mind as I prayed and pedaled. In hindsight, I needed to trust my spiritual instincts, which were saying, Enough reading! You need some time to process this!

You might be surprised at what comes up when you give yourself permission to trust your gut while still pursuing the wisdom of God. And when youre ready for more classic reading again, youll appreciate it that much more.

Read The Bible: It Is Full Of Gods Promises

Alpha: Why And How Should We Read The Bible?

And finally, not least of all, the Bible is full of extraordinary promises. It speaks of the all things that belong to the God-fearing!

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God. Revelation 2:7.

There are an almost infinite number of promises made to those who live according to Gods will. Are you livingly interested in these precious promises? Do you want to see what God does, and will do, for those who live according to His will? Then, by all means, pick up your Bible! It will tell you of all the promises that can be yours, both in this life and in eternity, if you do the will of God.

Whats The Point Of Bible Study Plans

Starting a Bible reading plan is like starting a new diet.

Changing your diet takes discipline. Even if its something you really want for yourself, its easy to slip up and forget about it. If you let bad habits keep footholds in your life, youll fail before you start, and youll never create the healthy new habits you want.

The Bible is one of our greatest sources of spiritual food. But sometimes we still fill up on junk food. Blogs, social media, news, TV shows, books, and games. These things arent bad in themselves, but when theyre the only sources of perspective, information, and insight you consume, something is missing.

When you have a sodium deficiency, your body craves salty foods. You might not even notice that youre craving salty foods in particular, but your body is reacting to that deficiency by creating a desire for something that restores it.

Many non-Christians have no desire to read the Bible. They want nothing to do with it. But that doesnt mean that as Gods creation they dont, on some level, crave his truth, his wisdom, his love, or his perspective. I see non-Christians all the time who have no idea how closely their innermost desires parallel Gods desires for them.

Without your daily dose of Scripture, its tough to be at your best all day.

Kids Bible Lesson Why Do We Study The Bible

Who knows why we go to school? Why do we study all those books that they give us? To get a good job, to learn what we need to know.

When you come to church, we also study a book. What book do we study? The Bible.

Who knows why we study the Bible?

The Bible is even more important than our school books because it tells us about God and Jesus. It tells us about how God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit love us and all the things that They have done for us and it tells us not how we can get a good job, but how we can be saved and go to Heaven when we die. It tells us how we are supposed to live our lives now. It tells us what kind of people God wants us to be and the kinds of things that He wants us to do.

Those are pretty important things, arent they? Thats why study the Bible to learn all those things.

Show students a popular childrens fiction book and ask, Who can tell me who wrote this book?

Now show them the Bible and ask, Who can tell me who wrote this book?

More than 40 people wrote the Bible, people like Moses and King David and Peter and Paul. It is a collection of books, a big book made up of a lot of smaller books. There are 66 books in the Bible. But those 40 different people werent just making up the Bible from their own ideas, were they? They werent just making up a story like this fiction book, right?

The people who wrote the Bible were writing true things, things that really happened. And they were writing the things that God gave them the idea to write about.

It Keeps You From Wrongly Dividing The Word

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth .

If Scripture can be rightly divided, then surely it can also be wrongly dividedand none of us want to be that one who does such a thing. As we study His Word, the Holy Spirit, who superintended the writing of the Word, will guide us into truth.

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come .

The Holy Spirit will never promote, confirm, or approve that which is not truth. Because He is the Spirit of truth, this is what He reveals. Anyone who deliberately falsifies Scripture, or is guilty of spreading dangerous doctrinal deviations, has not heard from the Spirit of God. Certain teachings may sound right and even feel right, but if it does not line up with Scripture, it is to be rejected.
