Seven Capital Virtues And The Seven Capital Sins
A list of the Seven Capital Virtues, which are also sometimes referred to as simply the Seven Virtues, and which oppose the Seven Capital Sins appeared later in an epic poem titled Psychomachia, or Battle/Contest of the Soul. Written by Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, a Christian governor who died around AD 410, it entails the battle between good virtues and evil vices. The enormous popularity of this work in the Middle Ages helped to spread the concept of holy virtue throughout Europe.
These Seven Capital Virtues do not correspond to the Seven Heavenly Virtues, the latter having been derived by combining the Cardinal and the Theological Virtues. Framework For Spiritual Formation
Writing for the instruction of fellow Dominican monks, Thomas Aquinas gave extensive attention to the nature of virtue and how it functioned in the life of the Christian. In his Summa Theologica, Aquinas argued that virtues are habitual dispositions patterns of mind and heart that bring about good actions, especially by preventing our impulsive desires from taking us to sins opposite extremes.8 The virtue of temperance, for example, guards the appetite against gluttony on the one hand and abstinence on the other. Similarly, fortitude fears neither danger nor labor.9
Christians act in virtuous ways because of the regenerating power and sanctifying grace of the Holy Spirit.
Aquinas also argued that Christian virtue was more than the Greek philosophers quest for self-improvement. Christians are disposed to act in virtuous ways because of the regenerating power and sanctifying grace of the Holy Spirit. But new dispositions also require habituation intentional cultivation through a life of obedient dependence on Christ.10 Like Augustine, Aquinas argued that the theological virtues connected to and comprehended in love were the specific means of grace God used to deepen and mature all other virtue.11

From Martyrdom To Monasticism
The church underwent massive transformation as Christianity transitioned from a persecuted sect to the predominant religion of the Roman Empire.
For much of the first two centuries of the churchs existence, the Roman government regarded Christianity as an illegitimate religion. Professing faith in Christ, therefore, was a sober and serious commitment. Christians faced episodic persecution by the empire and were occasionally publicly executed as martyrs. Because of these dangers, candidates for membership in the early church were rigorously examined to ensure a clear understanding of the gospel and prepare them for the possibility of martyrdom.
The situation changed markedly under emperor Constantine the Great , who declared tolerance of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire in AD 313. As Christianity became more acceptable and the ranks of the church swelled with new converts, the task of discipleship became more difficult. The threat of death by martyrdom no longer protected the church from insincere professions. This resulted in assemblies that neglected basic Christian discipleship and biblical spirituality. In some cases, churches looked as decadent as the surrounding culture.
It was in this setting of intense disciple-making that virtue and vice lists were freshly developed.
What Cures These Deadly Sins
The cure for these sins is the gift of a new heart that acts in accordance to the love and law of God. This new heart can only come from God. Ezekiel 36:26-27 says, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Humanity’s only hope is the miracle of a regenerated heart that acts according to the direction of the Holy Spirit to walk in Gods statutes and judgments.
Power does not come from self to change the heart. On the contrary, this verse clearly points out that God alone gives you a new heart and causes you to walk in His ways. As this event becomes a reality in your life, the seven deadly sins of gluttony, envy, sloth, wrath, pride, lust, and greed will lose their power in your life. With the indwelling Holy Spirit in your life, you will instead desire to live a life based upon the principles of the Bible.

Iia Two Overarching Christian Virtues
The two central attributes of God are his holiness and his love. These two characteristics, then, should characterize those who claim to believe in Him and follow Christ.
God is holy in the sense that he is both unique, i.e., there is no one else like him, and he is completely free of evil and infinitely good. From this character flows his righteousness wherein he always acts consistently with his moral nature . He never breaks the standard of his own holy Law. Finally, he is just and his justice requires that all men live in accordance with the Law which he established. Thus, holiness, righteousness and justicein a creaturely and derivative senseshould characterize the Christians disposition: Be holy as I am holy, says Peter, quoting the Old Testament . The one who claims to follow Jesus must be constantly growing in holiness, righteousness, and justice. The disposition of justice and goodness must permeate all other moral attributes, such as joy, conscientiousness, faithfulness, peace, kindness, gentleness thus, I must be mixed with love, i.e., the best interests of the people involved. For example, gentleness is not a very admirable trait if it stems from a heart seeking immoral things. But if holiness and justice are its origin and permeate its presence, it is a beautiful thing. It is Christlikeness in action.
Comparison Of Cardinal And Theological Virtues
The moral virtues are acquired by practice and habit. Catholic moral theology holds that the theological virtues differ from the cardinal virtues in that they cannot be obtained by human effort, but are infused by God into a person. The Episcopal Church shares this view. “As distinct from the cardinal virtues which we can develop, the theological virtues are the perfection of human powers given by the grace of God.” Like the cardinal virtues, an individual who exercises these virtues strengthens and increases them, i.e., they are more disposed to practice them.
Following St. Augustine, Aquinas also recognized a separate but related type of moral virtue which is also infused by God. The distinction lies both in their source and end. The moral virtue of temperance recognizes food as a good that sustains life, but guards against the sin of gluttony. The infused virtue of temperance disposes the individual to practice fasting and abstinence. The infused moral virtues are connected to the theological virtue of Charity.

History Of The Seven Deadly Sins
The seven deadly sins were first compiled by Pope Gregory I around the year 600. They are pride, greed, lust, wrath, gluttony, envy, and sloth. Gregory also compiled a list of the seven virtues: faith, hope, charity, justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude. The Bible would validate all of these concepts, but nowhere are they recorded in a list like this and nowhere in the Bible are they specifically referred to as the seven deadly sins or seven virtues. They do not pre-date the Ten Commandments which were given at Mt. Sinai around 1450 B.C. It is probably true that they were used extensively to teach principles from God’s Word, particularly in the centuries before the invention of the printing press when the Bible was not available for the common man to read and study.

Foils For The Deadly Sins
Thus, a tension emerged between the seven deadly sins and the seven heavenly virtues. The virtues did not clearly oppose an opposite deadly sin .
Aurelius Prudentius Clemens recognized this tension and saw the pastoral benefit of assigning opposing virtues as foils for each of the deadly sins. In Psychomachia, a graphic poem in the style of Virgils Aeneid, Prudentius squares off each of Cassians vices with the personified biblical virtue that could defeat it in the Christians battle for holiness. In the poem, as in the life of the believer, vainglory is defeated by humility, lust by chastity, anger by patience, and so on. The idea sprang from biblical teaching: the command to put off sin is grounded in the call to put on Christ to walk by his Spirit and so bear spiritual fruit . Christians fight the schemes of their adversary clothed in gospel armor and equipped with spiritual weaponry . Additionally, the New Testament almost always places the characteristics of true spirituality alongside the descriptions of the sins the believer is to flee.7
Nevertheless, despite the widespread influence of Prudentiuss poem in the medieval period, the seven heavenly virtues not a list of opposing virtues to contrast the deadly sins endured as a lasting framework for spiritual formation.
