God And Authority In The Catholic Church

The Jehovah’s Witnesses made me Catholic!

The Bible is a central source of authority for Catholics and reveals many important teachings. Catholics also respect the authority, leadership and teaching of the Pope.

The central scripture of Christianity is the Bible, which is a collection of books gathered into one volume. There are more books in the Catholic Bible than in versions used by other denominations:

  • 46 books of the Old Testament, other denominations acknowledge 39 books
  • 27 books of the New Testament, which is the same for other denominations

Who Are The Jehovah Witnesses And What Do They Believe

The Jehovah Witnesses were founded by Charles Taze Russell, a former haberdasher from Philadelphia, in early 1872 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Russell was born on February 16, 1852 in Pittsburgh, and died on October 31, 1916. He was baptized a Congregationalist, and was raised in a strict Protestant family. His later study of the Bible led him to deny the existence of hell and the doctrine of the Trinity, and to express Arian views concerning the nature of Jesus Christ, denying His divinity. In 1879, Russell founded the journal The Watchtower and in 1884 formed the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. He traveled on preaching missions throughout the United States and Europe, organizing his followers, who were called Russellites, Millennial Dawnists, International Bible Students, and finally Jehovah Witnesses. During his missionary work, he faced several scandals including the separation from his wife after eighteen years of marriage, and the accusation of fraud for selling miracle wheat for a very high price.

The main office is in Brooklyn, New York. The Jehovah Witnesses are highly centralized. Branch offices in important countries supervise the work and channel the distribution of publications. District and circuit servants regularly visit local congregations to meet local servants, publishers, and pioneers. Exact statistics are kept of all activities. As of 1994, about 1 million Witnesses belong to more than 22,000 congregations in some 80 countries.

  • A city where world headquarters permanently resides: Rome, Italy and Brooklyn, NY, USA
  • Both consider God to be the head of the world organization.
  • Both the Pope and the Governing body both claim inspiration.
  • Both organizations are “spirit directed” by God.
  • A simple definition of both is as follows: “Definition of a Catholic/Jw: ‘Someone who accepts Rome/Brooklyn as God’s visible spirit-directed theocratic organization upon the earth.
  • Both have official yearly meetings of the world leaders.
  • The official doctrines that have changed dramatically over time.
  • Both claim “new light” or progressive revelation to explain doctrinal changes.

  • Both discourage independent thinking from the world organization.
  • Both continue to blindly follow the organization in spite of major doctrinal changes, reversals and flip-flops.
  • Both “explain away” doctrinal changes, reversals and flip-flops by claiming “new light”.
  • Both view every other church as heretical and false.

    Catholic vs. Jehovahs Witness

Religious organizations who claim to have maintained Christianity are growing in number. Two of them are Catholic and Jehovahs Witness. But even though their teachings are only based on one religious text, which is the Bible, differences are still transparent between the two. The teachings of both groups are based on what Jesus taught when He was here on earth, but the identity of Jesus is different. The Catholics consider Jesus as God Himself based on Trinity the union of the Father and Son and Holy Ghost in one Godhead while Jehovahs Witnesses believe that Jesus is the Son of the Almighty God Jehovah.

Catholics and Jehovahs Witnesses differ in many other teachings such as that related with afterlife. Catholics believe in eternal hell, heaven and temporal purgatory. Good people would be allowed to enter the heavens by St. Peter and bad people would be forever punished in hell. On the other hand, Jehovahs Witnesses believe that after death, the dead person would not feel, see or experience anything until Jehovahs Judgment Day, wherein a war would take place between Jehovah and his enemy Satan the devil. After that event, all dead people would rise from the graves and be with their loved ones again.

    1. Catholics and Jehovahs Witnesses both base their teachings on the Bible.

Jesus Christ was Jehovah of the Old Testament

Invite students to share some names and titles of the Savior that they know. List their responses on the board. Tell students that today you will discuss an important name, or title, that Jesus Christ was known by before His mortal ministry. Invite them to read John 8:52â53, 56â59 silently. Then ask:

    • What questions were the Jews asking the Savior?

    • What do you think Jesus meant by His response, âBefore Abraham was, I amâ? .

To help students define the phrase âI am,â divide students into pairs and ask them to read Exodus 3:11â14 6:2â3, looking for how the God of the Old Testament identified Himself. After sufficient time, ask the following questions:

    • According to these verses, what names did the God of the Old Testament use to identify Himself?

    • How do these verses clarify the significance of Jesus Christâs statement, âBefore Abraham was, I amâ?

    Display the following statements:

âThis is as blunt and pointed an affirmation of divinity as any person has or could make. âBefore Abraham was I Jehovah.â That is, âI am God Almighty, the Great I AM. I am the self-existent, Eternal One. I am the God of your fathers. My name is: I AM THAT I AMââ .

Jehovah is âthe covenant or proper name of the God of Israel. It denotes the âUnchangeable Oneââ .

    Origin Of The Name Jahveh

The opinion that the name Jahveh was adopted by the Jews from the Chanaanites, has been defended by von Bohlen , Von der Alm , Colenso , Goldziher , but has been rejected by Kuenen and Baudissin . It is antecedently improbable that Jahveh, the irreconcilable enemy of the Chanaanites, should be originally a Chanaanite god.

It has been said by Vatke and J.G. Müller that the name Jahveh is of Indo-European origin. But the transition of the Sanscrit root, divthe Latin Jupiter-Jovis , the Greek Zeus-Dios, the Indo-European Dyaus into the Hebrew form Jahveh has never been satisfactorily explained. Hitzig’s contention that the Indo-Europeans furnished at least the idea contained in the name Jahveh, even if they did not originate the name itself, is without any value.

The theory that Jahveh is of Egyptian origin may have a certain amount of a priori probability, as Moses was educated in Egypt. Still, the proofs are not convincing:

    • Röth derives the Hebrew name from the ancient moon-god Ih or Ioh. But there is no connection between the Hebrew Jahveh and the moon .
    • Plutarch tells us that a statue of Athene in Sais bore the inscription: “I am all that has been, is, and will be”. But Tholuck shows that the meaning of this inscription is wholly different from that of the name Jahveh.
    • The patrons of the Egyptian origin of the sacred name appeal to the common Egyptian formula, Nuk pu nuk but though its literal signification is “I am I”, its real meaning is “It is I who” .

Why Is The Pronunciation Of Gods Name In Ancient Hebrew Unknown

Ancient Hebrew was written without vowels, using only consonants. The Hebrew-speaking reader could easily provide the appropriate vowels. However, after the Hebrew Scriptures were completed, some Jews adopted the superstitious belief that it was wrong to utter Gods personal name. When they read aloud a scripture that contained Gods name, they substituted expressions such as Lord or God. As centuries passed, this superstition spread and the ancient pronunciation was eventually lost. *

Some feel that the divine name was pronounced Yahweh, while others suggest different possibilities. A Dead Sea Scroll containing a portion of Leviticus in Greek transliterates the name Iao. Early Greek writers also suggest the pronunciations Iae, I·a·be, and I·a·ou·e, but none of these can be proved to be the pronunciation used in ancient Hebrew. *

Jehovah established the everlasting gospel anciently

With students still working in pairs, ask them to read Moses 6:51â52, 64â66 and identify what Jehovah taught Adam. Tell them that in verses 51â52, Jehovah was speaking on behalf of the Father. Then ask:

    • What did you notice about the gospel taught to Adam?

Indicate to students that in a later dispensation, Jehovah renewed His everlasting gospel through a covenant with Abraham known as the Abrahamic covenant. Divide the class in half. Assign half of the class to study Genesis 13:14â16 17:2â8 Abraham 1:18â19 2:8â11 and to make a list of the promises the Lord made to Abraham. Assign the other half of the class to study Genesis 17:1â5, 9 Abraham 1:19 2:8â11 and to make a list of what Abraham was required to do in order to receive the promised blessings.

While students are studying, copy the following chart on the board, leaving space to list responses:

    Abrahamic Covenant

    Promises Made to Abraham

    Abrahamâs Responsibilities

After sufficient time, invite a few students from each group to come to the board and write their findings under the proper heading. Consider summarizing the Abrahamic covenant by displaying and having a student read aloud the following statement:

Invite students to share ways they can secure the promised blessings of this covenant for themselves and their families, past, present, and future.

    Talking To Jehovah’s Witnesses

If you open your home to the Witnesses, that is more than most people do. Know that your charity and willingness to share your faith will leave a mark on the hearts and minds of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

  • Jehovah is the proper pronunciation of God’s name, and “Everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved” . Therefore, references to God in the New Testament should be translated as Jehovah. When the topic of the name of God comes up, first address the fact that the New Testament Greek always uses the word Lord and never Jehovah, even in quotes from the Old Testament. Encyclopedia Judaica, Webster’s Encyclopedia, Jewish Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Britannica, Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, and many other authoritative sources agree that the title Jehovah is erroneous and was never used by the Jews. So where did the name Jehovah come from? According to the Watchtower’s own publication, Aid to Bible Understanding, “The first recorded use of this form dates from the thirteenth century. C. E. Raymundus Martini, a Spanish monk of the Dominican order, used it in his book Pugeo Fidei of the year 1270. Hebrew scholars generally favor ‘Yahweh’ as the most likely pronunciation.” In regard to Romans 10:13, the Greek word used is kurios, which is translated Lord. However, when this passage is read in context with the preceding verse, the Lord being spoken of is Jesus Christ. So if the Lord in Romans 10:13 is Jehovah, then Jesus is Jehovah.

Trent Horn – Why do Jehovah’s Witnesses deny Christ’s divinity?

The main difference between Catholic and Jehovahs Witness is that Catholic believes that Jesus is the God himself which is based on Trinity, the Son, and father, and Holy Ghost.
