My Final Thoughts On Mermaids In The Bible

God Is Real Mermaids Are Demons

Well, there you have it! the Bible doesnt mention mermaids as we would think. But scripture does mention a false deity that depicts a mermaid-like body. Who would have thought!

And ancient people used to worship and sacrifice to this evil spirit. What is really interesting is that this imagery of half fish and half human has survived centuries to still be shared in modern-day movies, and books. Because its more than just a human creation, this is spiritual. Pretty eye-opening and interesting!

Well, I hope you enjoyed this little study on the topic of mermaids in the Bible .

Alright, lets get down to some mermaid business!

Mesopotamia And Eastern Mediterranean

Depictions of entities with the tails of fish, but the upper bodies of human beings appear in Mesopotamian artwork from the Old Babylonian Period onwards. These figures are usually mermen, but mermaids do occasionally appear. The name for the mermaid figure may have been kuliltu, meaning “fish-woman”. Such figures were used in Neo-Assyrian art as protective figures and were shown in both monumental sculpture and in small, protective figurines.

The first known mermaid stories appeared in Assyria c. 1000 BC. The goddess Atargatis, mother of the Assyrian queen Semiramis, loved a mortal and unintentionally killed him. Ashamed, she jumped into a lake and took the form of a fish, but the waters would not conceal her divine beauty. Thereafter, she took the form of a mermaidâhuman above the waist, fish belowâalthough the earliest representations of Atargatis showed her as a fish with a human head and arm, similar to the Babylonian god Ea. The Greeks recognized Atargatis under the name Derketo. Sometime before 546 BC, Milesian philosopher Anaximander postulated that mankind had sprung from an aquatic animal species. He thought that humans, who begin life with prolonged infancy, could not have survived otherwise.

Native American Mermaid Symbolic Meanings

One story from the Mikmaq tribe tells of a bird who discovers a pond with five lovely women therein. He noted that they didnt really look totally human, having silvery scaled skin and hair of seaweed. They adorned themselves with gifts of the sea, and the bottom half of their body was that of a fish.

The Passamaquoddy tales recount the story of how two girls became Mermaids . They went swimming in an area prohibited by their parents. They came to a spot where they were surrounded in slime. Their legs became snakes, their hair black and wearing silver bands on their arms and neck.

Sekani legend talks of the marriage between a human and a Mermaid. By the first winter, the Mermaid yearned for her ocean home. She begged for freedom. It wasnt until the second winter, however, that the man complied so she could hunt for him. Each day she returned dutifully with food. They became happy and had seven children. After the last child, winter returned, and the man sadly broke a hole in the ice so she could return. When she began swimming, she realized her children could not follow her. She tried to work a spell, placing water on their lips and telling them to follow her. Sadly they drown and were never seen again.

The Difference Between The Real Little Mermaid And That Of Disney

MERMAID BIBLE Mermaid Hunter

Walt Disney’s factory-made the story “The Little Mermaid” extremely popular since its release in 1990 when we were introduced to the beautiful Ariel, daughter of King Triton. The movie tells the story of a mermaid that wants to be human and have legs, and how in order to do this she must give her most prized possession to a witch: her voice. In the end, the mermaid becomes human and marries a prince she had fallen in love with.

In the original story, however, written by Andersen, the mermaid meets a more tragic end: not only does she not get the love of the real heir, but she ends up taking her own life by jumping in the sea and turning into sea foam.

Us Confirms Existence Of Mermaids

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reportedly confirmed that mermaids exist and that they are growing in numbers.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reportedly published a post on their Ocean Facts newsfeed titled Conclusive Evidence of the Existence of Aquatic Humanoids.

The agency went on to say that magic females, who first appeared in cave paintings in the late Paleolithic period some 30,000 years ago, when modern humans began to sail the seas, do exist and are living in all the oceans of the world.

Animal Planet television recently aired a special called Mermaids: The Body Found, that also proved the existence of mermaids.

National Ocean Service spokeswoman Sandy Nixon told WWN that at least 65 mermaid researchers and experts gathered on the island of Tahiti to examine all the known evidence and have concluded, emphatically, that half human half-fish hybrids are living peacefully among us.

Mermaid experts say that the majority of mermaids are in the warmer waters of the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, but that many have been spotted in the Pacific Ocean and Southern Atlantic. There is a large school of mermaids, swimming just outside Ocean City Maryland, said mermaidologist, Marcus Plumkin, of the University of Florida.

So, if youre at the beach keep a lookout for mermaids. They are out there!

Mermaid Myths Vs Real Stories

Like any cryptid with an enduring legacy, people from around the world claim to see mermaids. Unfortunately, there is also the occasional hoax, manipulated video footage, and plain-old honest mistake. For this reason, its important to take any sightings account with a grain of salt.

But there are a lot of mysterious creatures allegedly out there, tucked away in the shadows, safe from mainstream science. Is it possible mermaids are real but elusive animals, hidden beneath the vast veil of the worlds oceans?.

Theres a big problem with this idea. Mermaids, mermen merfolk are described as having the upper body of a human and the lower body of a fish. This works just fine for mythology, as there are all kinds of creatures with mixed-up bodies throughout ancient legend, but it makes things tough when we look at it from a biological perspective.

Humans are mammals and fish are, well, fish. You don’t need a doctorate in marine biology to figure out that humans and fish have very different physiologies, and its pretty much impossible for a creature to retain the characteristics of both.

The pairing doesnt work.

On the other hand, perhaps were taking the fish part too literally. Witnesses who see mermaids often catch only a fleeting glimpse, and may only describe their tails as fish-like for lack of a better word. Ancient sailors and seamen may not have known any other way to describe them. But what if mermaids are, in fact, 100% mammalian?

Mockumentary Promotes Dubious Hypothesis

The Animal Planet channel recently aired a program promoting an aquatic evolutionary past for humanity. Tim Chaffey, AiGU.S. offers a critique and alerts readers to a newer genre of filmmaking.

A new television program filmed as a documentary recently aired on the Animal Planet cable channel. Viewers of Mermaids: The Body Found are introduced to several lines of evidence that supposedly demonstrate the existence of mermen and mermaids. Through dramatic re-enactments portraying scientists and eyewitnesses studying videos, audio recordings, cave paintings, and a mysterious body discovered in South Africa, along with computer-animated scenes showing the evolutionary development of these creatures, the program treats the subject with the same seriousness as we would expect in a documentary of a known animal. The press release on the Discovery Channels website promises that the program is so compelling and the evidence for mermaids is so credible.

According to the program, the following evidence strongly suggests that humans share an evolutionary history with mermaids. Consider the following points mentioned by the narrator:

At times, the broadcast offered an alternative to the AAH. Rather than being in our supposed evolutionary lineage, the mermaids were portrayed as distant cousinsthat is, both humans and merpeople split off from our alleged ape-like ancestors.

Plenty Of Historical Figures Believed In Mermaids

Bible Journaling With Mermaids in Ezekiel 47:9

In reality, most mermaid sightings can be explained by the presence of manatees or other known sea mammals and too many months spent at sea, but we didn’t know that during the time of Columbus. In a ship log dated from his trip to what is now the Dominican Republic in 1493, ol’ Chris noted three mermaids that he saw frolicking in the water, though they were “not half as beautiful as they are painted.” There’s just no pleasing that guy.

Christopher Columbus wasn’t the only historical sailor who claimed to have a close encounter with a mermaid. John Smith, the Englishman who helped settle Jamestown before he was saved by Pocahontas, had his own mermaid sighting off the coast of Newfoundland in 1614. He was more generous than Columbus: In his journal, he wrote that “her long green hair imparted to her an original character that was by no means unattractive.”

An ancient depiction of Noah’s Ark included mermaids.

Mermaid Sightings Were Recorded On Ancient Maps

Since mermaids were such jerks, sea captains avoided areas where mermaids were known to live and worked with cartographers to create maps that noted mermaids’ lairs as a warning to other sailors. One of these cartographers was Olaus Magnus, who created the Carta Marina, a comprehensive map of all the sea monsters and mermaids living in the waters around Scandinavia, in the 16th century.

Both Christopher Columbus and John Smith saw mermaids.

Difference Between Mermaid And Siren

Key difference: Mermaid and Siren are two mythical female creature known for their beauty and luring appearance. A “Mermaid” is a half-woman half-fish creature that lives in seas, while a Siren is a half-woman half-bird creature. Both have been a fascination in popular fiction literature for their beauty and alluring appearances.

Mermaid and Siren stories have been heard and told through the 16th century and onwards. The beauty of these mythical creatures made them an indispensable part of popular folklore and fiction that still has influences on audiences today. Their habitat has often been shown as oceans and islands with their mysterious appearances as awfulized characters. Fairy tales and folk tales have always had these creatures interacting with other characters with the fascination that is dear to children as well as adults. The uniquely odd features of these creatures make them always “wanted to hear about” in popular stories and after the arrival of cinema, they were explored beautifully on motion picture screens. . Children are often seen asking elders – “are mermaids real” and “are sirens real?” Often, a mermaid and siren are considered to be the same and hence people remain confused between due to their similarities because they have influenced us in the same way fairy tales and folk tales did. This article might give a clear difference between their existence and features.

The Powerful Mermaid Milk

There isn’t much information about how mermaids are born, but there have been mentions of them nursing their young just like human women do. Believed to be magical, the milk was famous amongst alchemists, and some records mention how for a while, a cunning chemist sold a liquid which he claimed was mermaid milk.

How Did Sirens Arise In The Septuagint Translation Of Isaiah 1: 21

Mermaid Bible Journaling Printable Isaias 43 ESPAÑOL

I am reading in the book of Isaiah at chapter 13 verse 21 in the King James Bible , and I notice in this bible, and in other English bible translations, that owls and jackals are commonly mentioned.

But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.

The translation in the Greek Septuagint uses a word meaning sirens” who were mythological creatures instead of owls/jackals. See page 30 here.

But wild animals will rest there, and the houses will be filled with noise there sirens will rest, and there demons will dance.

I am not a Greek or Hebrew scholar, so I am finding it difficult to follow what is written about the “sirens”, but it does intrigue me that they are mentioned in the Septuagint in six verses, including three times in Isaiah , yet English translations of the Hebrew use “jackals” or “wild goats”.

Interestingly, I have found in various internet searches that the sirens became synonymous with mermaids down through the ages, and that some churches in the UK as well as castles have carvings of the sirens in various places such as the church roof and pews.

How did the notion of mythological/supernatural creatures enter the text of Isaiah 13?

Subsequent to the publication of Greek Myths and Christian Mystery, referenced by another answer, Manolis Papoutsakis made an ingenious hypothesis that may finally solve the mystery as to how the odd translation arose.

Only God can answer that. What I do know is that mermaids make me smile, and smiling while reading my Bible is a good thing.

So if youre searching for fun ways to read more of and engage your Bible, I encourage you to give these a whirl. Hopefully, theyll bring a smile to your face in both the New and Old Testaments.

Bible Verses About Mermaids Or Should I Say Merman

As I mentioned earlier there is no mention flat out Bible verses that use the word mermaid or merman. The only thing is the mention of Dagon.

If you are interested in reading these verses they are below.

Judges 16:23 NKJV 23 Now the lords of the Philistines gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice. And they said: Our god has delivered into our hands Samson our enemy!

1 Samuel 5:1-12 NKJV 1 Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon.

3 And when the people of Ashdod arose early in the morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and set it in its place again. 4 And when they arose early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the ground before the ark of the LORD. The head of Dagon and both the palms of its hands broken off on the threshold only Dagons was left of it.

5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagons house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day. 6 But the hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and He ravaged them and struck them with tumors, Ashdod and its territory.

12 And the men who did not die were stricken with the tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
