Best Option For Serious Study: Logos

HOW TO use Youversion Bible App

When it comes to scholarly study, there are really two heavyweight contenders: Logos, and Accordance. Both offer powerful tools to help you take your Bible study to the next level and offer powerful Mac apps that give you additional control when unlocking the power of your theological library. We like Logos because it offers a better iOS experience.

Like YouVersions Bible App, the interface in the Logos iOS app is very clean and easy to use. Its extremely minimal, and I personally like it a little bit better.

But the biggest benefit that both Logos and Accordance give you is the ability to quickly access the original languages via Strongs Numbers even on your iOS device.

Strongs Numbers are basically a numerical index of every word used in the original Hebrew and Greek texts of our modern-day Bibles. The numbers make it easy to look up the original word and its accompanying definition in the English language. By looking up the Strongs Number, you can connect the meaning of English word used in our modern translations back to the full meaning in the original Hebrew and Greek manuscripts.

These Strongs Numbers come from a reference work called a concordance. A concordance is an alphabetical list of words and their definitions, like a dictionary. For example, you can be reading your Bible and see that the Strongs number for the word love is used in a specific scripture reference. For example, John 15:9 in the King James says:

But now its a lot easier.

    Why You Should Trust Us

This review is one that Ive always wanted to write.

In addition to being a nerd who loves Apple technology, Im also a student who is passionate about my faith. In fact, I went back to school several years ago and got a Bible College degree just for funsies. Ive never aspired to be a priest or a pastor, but I did want to learn more about the Bible. So when I had the opportunity to take night classes through the sattelite campus at my local church, I did full-time for four years.

While my Bible College experience was definitely not as rigorous as a lot of seminaries, it did give me a greater appreciation for some of the technological study tools we have available to us today. So while Im not a Greek or Hebrew scholar, I can say Ive gone to school for this and I do have a basic understanding of the original languages the Bible was written in.

    Why does this even matter?

Because the original languages are often much more descriptive than our traditional English translations. For example, there are multiple words used in the Greek for our English word, love:

    • eros = desire, sexual love
    • phileo = brotherly love, like as a friend
    • agape = the highest form of love, charity

As you can see, understanding the differences between the original words used can significantly alter your perception of the meaning a particular verse has. And with the technology we have available to us today, its easier than ever to understand which word was used and what the author actually meant.

Youversion Bible App Best Audio Bible Apps For Android With Social Networking

If you only downloaded one Bible app on your phone or tablet, it likely came from Life.church. Life.church brags millions of downloads and often shows up in the list of top apps on iOS and Android.

The church created the Bible app years ago and keeps developing it and improving it. The app excels as a basic Bible reader app with an elegant user interface. It primarily serves as a Bible reading app but adds audio Bible listening and does it well.

I include it here because of its great social networking features. Share Bible verses in a visual way. If your friends post pretty photos with Bible verses imposed over the top of them, the share likely came from the Bible app.

To use the audio Bible features, open in the Bib reader and youll see a small audio icon in the top toolbar second from the right. Tap it to show the Bible reader pop up as seen in the left screenshot above. You can play from the current location in the Bible shown in the reader window. The fast forward and rewind buttons go forward or back by a chapter.

The settings at the bottom of the pop-up window control the speed and set a timer for how long the app will read the Bible. Theres also a button to hide the controls. If you do, then youll see the screen on the right which shows you smaller rewind, play, and forward buttons. They function the same way as the larger pop-up window.

    Engage Effectively With Audio Bibles

We all know at least one speed-reader who can bust through the Lord of the Rings trilogy in a month. They make reading look easy. But, for most people, reading is more of a challenge.

First of all, it can be difficult to keep a focused mind. Ever find yourself re-reading that verse for a third time? Weve all been there.

But secondly, the Bible is definitely one of the more difficult books to stay completely focused while reading. This isnt something we should be ashamed of, but recognize that there are a lot of unfamiliar concepts in there! Not only are you trying to understand what God is trying to teach you but youre also trying to pronounce Melchizideck correctly, understand the importance of Levirate law, and remember the context of the passage.

    Thats a lot.

But audio Bibles can relieve some of that overload.

Most people learn better, retaining more information, by listening. If this is you, then audio Bibles can be a game-changer.

Audio Bibles Let The Bible App Read To You

    Read The Bible

Many early Christians were only able to experience portions of the Bible. One person would read aloud to a group, sharing passages from a handwritten copy of the text.

Today our smartphones give us hundreds of complete Bibles in our pockets. And the audio versions of many of these can actually read to us from Gods inspired Word!

The Bible App helps you engage more with Scripture, no matter what youre doing: exercising, getting ready for work, on your commuteeven reading along.1

    Engage Differently With Audio Bibles

You also may discover that you can find new takeaways by listening.

This is similar to the differences you may find in reading an email and having a person talk to you over the phone.

Inflections can bring text to life, providing more emotion and context. While reading Pauls sometimes long-winded letters, you may get lost and lose sight of the point of the sentence. But by listening, you may actually be able to engage different with the text than ever before.

Bible Apps Anyone Can Use For Free

When you are in a rush and dont have time to grab your Bible, or simply forgot it, Bible apps are a great way to connect with Gods word. It can be hard sometimes to always have a Bible on you, but that does not mean you have to forfeit the benefit of being able to learn from Gods word straight from your phone.

Whats the best Bible app? The best Bible app is YouVerison. It offers the Bible in many translations along with devotionals and audio recordings of Scripture. Its also free and you can read the Bible without an internet connection.

Having a Bible app on your phone can help you as you study your Bible by bringing more resources to the table.
