James R. Lynch, Funeral Mass – Visitation Catholic Church, Kansas City, MO, July 30th, 2022.

In exploring Kansas City architecture as a new transplant, youll find that there is a wide variety from Queen Anne to Neoclassical and Modern to Prairie styles. The Gothic and English revival buildings and stained-glass windows were especially fascinating to someone used to West Texas churches made of wood, bricks, and sometimes adobe.

Kansas City can trace its beginnings back to 1821 when Francois Chouteau established a trading post on the waterway. The town of Westport, which soon became one of Kansas Citys neighborhoods, was established in 1833 as a port along the Santa Fe Trail. Some of the first churches in the area were Westport United Methodist Church and Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in 1835 and Westport Presbyterian Church in 1836. To put that in perspective, Kansas City wasnt even incorporated as a town in June 1850 and as a city in March 1853.

I am sure that I did not find all of the oldest churches. Many have since shut down, been rebranded, or burned down in a fire never to return. Sometimes you must also track down the original name of a church to discover its history. For example, one old congregation may now be operating in a fancy new building in one part of town while their old Gothic Church sits downtown under a completely new name.

Here are 14 churches in Kansas City that range from English to Gothic Revival architecture. .

Leaders From 13 Different Religious Organizations Have Joined A Lawsuit Filed By The National Women’s Law Center And Americans United For Separation Of Church And State Challenging Missouris Abortion Laws Two Leaders From Kansas City Say The Trigger Ban And Other Restrictions Violate Their Congregations’ Religious Freedom

A lawsuit brought by an alliance of 13 religious leaders, along with The National Womens Law Center and Americans United for Separation of Church, attempts to overturn Missouris nearly total abortion ban, which went into effect in June after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Two religious leaders from Kansas City have joined the suit, which was filed Thursday in St. Louis Circuit Court.

Our legislatures are establishing a specific religious point of view, and foisting that religious point of view on the rest of us, said Rabbi Doug Alpert, who leads Congregation Kol Ami.

Alpert says Missouris abortion laws conflict with the Jewish faith, which he says give precedence to the life of the mother over a fetus until it is born.

Reverend Holly McKissick, founder of Peace Church UCC, says that her faith shares a similar viewpoint, and believes a majority of Americans do as well.

For most of us it would be more about viability, McKissick said. If we went over to St. Luke’s right now, and there was a fire and we could grab a newborn or three embryos. Wed grab the newborn because an embryo is not a person, a person is a person.

McKissick and Alpert joined KCUR’s Up To Date to discuss why they joined the lawsuit and how their religions view abortion rights.

What are people saying about churches in Kansas City, MO?

This is a review for churches in Kansas City, MO:

“If you are looking for real, down to earth, friendly people to hang out and worship with… This is the place! The church is non-denominational. The worship is awesome – fun and spirit-filled. The preaching is easy to understand and Biblically based. The kids area is AMAZING! So much fun for kiddos with great life lessons being taught through Bible stories. The building itself is modern and beautiful. You almost feel like you are walking into a modern coffee house when you first walk in… Plus, there is an actual coffee bar – so come early and get a Starbucks style drink and relax! 🙂 This church cares about people and truly shows God’s love to each other and the community it’s members represent.”
