La County To Pay $400k In Settlement With Sun Valley Church That Defied Covid Health Orders
A Sun Valley mega church that defied L.A. County health orders will be paid $800,000 to settle its legal battle with the county and state, with county supervisors voting to pay half that cost.
LOS ANGELES — A Sun Valley church that repeatedly flouted health restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic will be paid $800,000 to settle its legal battle with Los Angeles County and the state – with the county Board of Supervisors voting Tuesday to pay half that cost.
Los Angeles County has already spent more than $950,000 in attorneys fees and other costs in the case of Grace Community Church, according to a legal summary provided to the board.
Led by Pastor John MacArthur, the church defied county health orders again and again over the past year, most notably by continuing to hold indoor services despite a ban on such gatherings, while also refusing to enforce mask-wearing and physical-distancing requirements for church-goers.
County health officials repeatedly cited the church, then took the matter to court to obtain an injunction requiring the church to adhere to health regulations, saying they were essential to control the spread of COVID-19. The church, meanwhile, sued the state and the county, claiming the COVID rules amounted to constitutional violations of religious freedom.
The county’s $400,000 payment will come out of the public health budget.

Spiritual Abuse Definition: Any attempt to exert power and control over someone using religion, faith, or beliefs can be spiritual abuse.
Coercive Control Definition: Coercive control is a form of emotional abuse or intimate partner violence that can cause psychological trauma. Here, we use it to describe a specific form of abuse practiced in the local church setting by men and women in church leadership positions. It describes a pattern of behaviors a perpetrator uses to gain control and power by eroding a persons autonomy and self-esteem. This can include acts of intimidation, threats, and humiliation. Coercive control also refers to a pattern of controlling behaviors that create an unequal power dynamic in a relationship. In the local church setting, these behaviors give the church leader power over their Christian subordinate, making it difficult for them to leave the church.
Spiritual Exploitation/Opportunism: Spiritual opportunism refers to the exploitation of spiritual ideas : for personal gain, partisan interests or selfish motives. Usually the implication is that doing so is unprincipled in some way, although it may cause no harm and involve no abuse.
I see potential for spiritual abuse and coercive control in multiple ways at Grace Community Church, and also signs of exploitation/opportunism. I will list them in this section.

The grandson of Canadian minister Harry MacArthur and son of Baptist radio preacher and Irene Dockendorf, MacArthur was born in . During a 1979 interview, Pastor MacArthur stated he is “distantly related to .” He went on to say, “I understand that Iâm a fifth cousin, and so itâs quite a distance but nonetheless we are related.” MacArthur followed in his father’s footsteps to enroll at the from 1957 to 1959. The Church May Face Legal Problems
Franklin Graham posted on Twitter shortly after Grace Community Church published the update from MacArthur. This isnt the first time that Grace Community Church has gone through legal trials. The church was sued back in the 70s and 80s for clergy malpractice. After ten years, the Supreme Court upheld the ruling of Californias Supreme Court and found Grace Community Church not guilty of clergy malpractice. MacArthur claims the suit was an attempt to stop them from teaching Scripture.
During his update, MacArthur addressed another point of controversy that has come up recently. MacArthur said some people are talking about the church receiving stimulus money from the federal government earlier this spring. The church did receive a check, however MacArthur says they sent the money back.

LOS ANGELES — A legal battle between Los Angeles County, the state and a Sun Valley church that repeatedly flouted health restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic could be coming to an end, with the county Board of Supervisors being asked next week to approve a $400,000 payment to the church to settle the case.
According to a county staff report, the settlement calls for the state to pay an additional $400,000 to resolve the litigation with Grace Community Church. The report, first obtained by KNX Newsradio, indicates that the county has already spent more than $950,000 in attorneys fees and other costs related to the legal battle with the church.
The church, led by Pastor John MacArthur, repeatedly defied county health orders over the past year, most notably by continuing to hold indoor services despite a ban on such gatherings, while also refusing to enforce mask-wearing and social-distancing requirements for church-goers.

UPDATE This week, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to settle its lawsuit with Grace Community Church by paying its half of $800,000. The state will pay the other half.
The countys payment will come out of its public health budget, Los Angeles Daily News reports. In a statement, the county said:
After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that some public health safety measures could not apply to houses of worship, resolving this litigation is the responsible and appropriate thing to do. From the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Los Angeles County has been committed to protecting the health and safety of its residents. We are grateful to the countys faith organizations for their continued partnership to keep their congregants and the entire community safe and protected from COVID-19.

Los Angeles County has already spent more than $950,000 in attorneys fees and other costs in the legal battle against Grace Community Church, according to a summary provided to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The board voted Tuesday to pay its half of a $800,000 settlement reached with the Sun Valley church, with the other half to be paid by the state.
The countys $400,000 payment will come out of its public health budget.
County health officials had cited the church repeatedly, then went to court to get an injunction that would require the church to comply with health regulations. The church fought back, claiming the COVID safety regulations amounted to constitutional violations of religious freedom in a lawsuit.
The church held services even after outbreaks were reported among its congregation.
But even though a state Supreme Court judge issued the preliminary injunction, the church ignored it and continued to hold indoor services. LA County attorneys then sought a contempt ruling against Grace Community Church, which sought to have the injunction lifted and the contempt request dismissed. The church cited two Supreme Court decisions that struck down an indoor worship ban while allowing caps on attendance and a ban on singing in their request.

MacArthur stated that for 51 years, Grace Community Church has remained faithful to the preaching and teaching of Gods Word and because of that they have seen Gods divine providence.
The church isnt unsympathetic to those members who dont feel safe gathering just yet, though. MacArthur emphasized members can continue to stay home and watch the live stream if, for instance, they have compromised immune systems. Additionally, the church is adding outdoor seating starting this coming Sunday to accommodate around 1,000 people who may still be concerned about being in closed areas with others. MacArthur said, we want to make people feel welcomed. The church will provide hand sanitizer, masks, and water to those choosing to sit outside.

Amazing church!! I had the opportunity to visit years ago, and it was unlike any other church I have visited. Despite it being a big church, their main concern is teaching the Word of God and doing everything biblically. What amazed me, was that every person crossing the street to church, was carrying a Bible in their hands. Music was amazing too!!
A true Christian church with solid biblical doctrines. What a privilege and blessing to have come across this place and to be sanctified by a true biblical pastor in John MacArthur. Indeed Grace of God that He led me to it and delivered me from the various false churches and false doctrines I was blinded by in the past. My dream is to one day be able to attend a live service service in person and be baptized there by pastor John himself.
Very professional in every aspect. The choir and musicians are top notch. Occasionaly they have amazing guest singers. Very knowledgeable staff. They even have a live online streaming for those who cannot make it. Praise God and Christ Jesus we have this establishment in our community.
