Its important to remember that the Bible is a collection of writings. No one sat down and said, Lets write the Bible from start to finish. The scrolls that make up the books of the Bible were written by more than 30 authors and accumulated over thousands of years.

These books were laid out by literary genre:

• The books of Moses
• Final prophecy

At the beginning, the Bible is in chronological order. If you read the books of Moses in the order that they appear, youre reading biblical history in its proper sequence. And of course, the Old Testament is chronologically before the New Testament. But eventually youll come to places where timelines weave together or overlap. And there is benefit to this arrangement, as for example stopping to read a prophet can give you insight into a historical narrative, and reading one of Pauls epistles can clarify events in the story of Acts.

How Often Should You Read The Bible

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

In Joshua 1:8 God tells Joshua to meditate on the Law day and night. This will help Joshua obey Gods commands.

While reading and meditating on Gods word are two different spiritual disciplines, it is hard to do one without the other.

Why You Should Read The Bible Chronologically

I have more study Bibles than I can count. Not just study Bibles, I have so many different versions and styles. I love them. Anytime I see a new one, its so hard for me to not just pick it up. Its a bit of a guilty pleasure, but the good kind that I shouldnt feel guilty about.

In addition to personal Bible study, I am a firm believer in the importance of understanding the Bible historically and chronologically. Its so important to be able to understand the context and how key pieces fit together. For example, knowing that Psalm 51 is Davids cry to God after being broken over his sin with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah adds so much more potency to that earnest plea for forgiveness. And knowing the history of Gods people from Adam to Jesus makes Matthew 1 not a boring genealogy, it becomes an exciting reminder of how God has worked through so many lives to fulfill prophesy through Jesus.

That said, Ive dabbled with chronological study Bibles before, but they havent really taken for me. Either I havent found a translation I liked, or I didnt love the way it was organized. So I typically turn to external study to make sure I know exactly where a portion Im reading fits. Things like Iva Mays 14 eras of the Bible can be a helpful resource for that.

There really isnt a right or wrong answer to this question. It really depends on what your goals are.

Do you want to read through the Bible in a year?

Do you want to read it in chronological order?

Are you trying to make reading the bible a daily habit?

Are you studying a specific topic?

Is there a specific book of the Bible you want to focus on?

No matter what your goals are there are plenty of Bible reading plans available online for you to choose from. Most bibles have a yearly reading plan already in them.

What Is A Chronological Bible

A traditional Bible is arranged by grouping similar book genres together. They are arranged by books, not passages or accounts.

A chronological Bible is pulled apart and put back together, arranged in the order in which the events of the Bible are believed to have happened. Sections are arranged so that you can see how key events took place and fit together. This allows for a better understanding of context, and we know context is key to proper biblical understanding!

Although there are more than a few to pick from, most of the sections in a chronological Bible have dates assigned to them so that you can stay on track with your reading. A chronological Bible allows you to continue reading without flipping around as you would need to do in a traditional Bible.

How To Develop A Daily Bible Reading Plan For The Year

You can develop your own Bible reading plan, starting with Creation on day one and working through Genesis, the story of Noahâs Ark up to Abrahamâs journey.

As you proceed through the Scriptures each day, make sure you highlight verses and make notes in the margins. You may also want to cross-reference other passages of the Bible. By the end of the year , youâll be reading the Book of Revelation, predicting the Second Coming of Christ, which is the logical end of the Bible.

While reading Abrahamâs journey, consider the promises God made to him and the deliverance of the Hebrews from slavery during the Exodus. The struggles of the Hebrews are well-documented by the prophet Jeremiah in Lamentations 1-3.

We read about David in 1 and 2 Samuel. He also wrote some of the Psalms. Do you know which psalm he wrote when? Or why he felt the need to write them? You might not think it matters until you realize that after his involvement with Bathsheba, David wrote Psalm 51.
