Historic Lexington Church City Involved In Dispute Over Parking

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A historic downtown Lexington church is fighting with the city.

Main Street Baptist Church leaders say they want to stay where they are, but new city developments have taken away most of their parking.

Main St Baptist Church in downtown Lex is taking a stance against the city. Church members are calling on city leaders to help them find more permanent parking. It’s an issue that’s been going on for the past 30 years. More details at 5:30.

The sign recently went up in response to an ongoing fight over parking spaces.

For years, the church has asked the city to designate 250 spaces for its 300 member congregation. Church leaders are frustrated with the lack of progress.

They just kept kicking the can down the road, said Roger Wayne Cornelius, senior assistant pastor.

Cornelius says the issue dates back to the 80s. Then-mayor Scotty Baesler promised the church they could use what used to be a big parking lot.

I said now do we used to get this in writing? He said, no, I promise. You got the word of the mayor, Cornelius said.

The church used the parking lot for 25 years. Its no longer there due to the expansion of Rupp Arena, now called the Central Bank Center.

Main Street Baptist is left with two the tiny parking lots it owns.

Church members are now demanding that city leaders help them find more permanent parking.

LEXINGTON, Ky. If you wonder where Main Street Baptist Church stands on its 36-year parking dilemma with the city of Lexington, look no further than the banner that is draped across the front of the church.

It practically screams in big purple capitalized letters: WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED!

Rev. Victor Sholar said the church is not backing down after a letter from the city’s lawyers was sent to the church Monday making a proposal to fix the issue. But Sholar, his church leadership, and even several members of the city council, didnt agree with the plan.

Were going to continue to fight, make our presence known with city council each week, the pastor said. Were going to pray and utilize opportunities we have and then keep praying some more.

The proposal that attorneys for the city offered included 250 parking spaces in the Central Bank Center when the center does not need them for an event at Rupp Arena . The city would also provide shuttles for ancillary parking, if needed. Additional permanent parking for another 49 spaces close to its buildings could be made available through a land swap with the Town Branch Park.

It also added a condition: If the church doesnt OK a permanent agreement, the shuttle service and permanent parking through a land swap are off the table, the letter said.

But Sholar says the church must have the guaranteed 250 spaces for continued growth.

Sholar has been disappointed with how Mayor Linda Gortons office has handled the situation.
