What does repent mean? The definition of repent is often missed and instead we just picture an angry preacher yelling at us.

We tend to think that the meaning of repent is to feel bad for our sins. Its a guilt laden word that should make us not want to sin any more.

Maybe youve seen someone holding a sign on a corner screaming at those passing by to repent. Or maybe youve been in church and the pastor exhorted the congregation to repent. Or maybe youve read a few passages in the Bible that talked about repentance. But have you ever stopped to think about what it means to repent?

I think many of us have a misunderstood, or at least incomplete, view of the true repentance meaning.

I want to give you a few images that will help you better understand repentance. But first, we need to take a look at what the Bible says about repentance.

1. Love or hate?

When reading todays verses of the Gospel one can easily fall into a trap. Does Jesus really urge us to hate others?

To better comprehend the meaning of these words we should be aware of their Jewish context.

2. Key words

If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

This sentence from the Gospel is one of the most difficult to understand. How is it possible that Jesus, who talks so much about love of God and neighbor, should say such words! To understand this, one must read the text in the context of Jewish culture.

In the Bible, the expression to hate means to love less. For example, in the Old Testament, Leah says the Lord has heard that she was loved less by her husband Jacob . The word used in the Hebrew original is precisely the word hate .

The very same word is used by Jesus to indicate that those who want to follow Him must choose loving Jesus as their first and foremost love. Such love does not by any means exclude loving ones family or oneself. However, the love of Christ is the greater love.

In the same way, anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions, cannot be my disciple.

When calling the disciples, Jesus does not begin by making promises, but rather sets out His requirements. Another condition relates to material things.

There are 3 places in the New Testament where sex sins are specially referenced. The first is in Romans 1:20 – 32, where certain people who reject God are given over to defile themselves in a variety of ways that includes homosexuality and overall sexual immorality.

The second mention of sex-related sins is in 1Corinthians 5:1 – 13, where the apostle Paul had to deal with the local church allowing open incest to be committed. The third sex issue dealt with in the New Testament is in Revelation 2:19 – 25. A female who considers herself a prophetess within the Thyatira church, in the spirit of Jezebel, was teaching believers to commit sexual immorality and spiritual adultery.

The Meaning Of Numbers: The Number 3

The number 3 conveys the meaning of completeness, though to a lesser degree than 7. It appears 467 times in God’s word. It derives its symbolism from the fact that it is the first of four spiritually perfect numerals . The 3 righteous patriarchs before the flood were Abel, Enoch and Noah. i. After an earthquake devastated the region in a.d. 60 Laodicea refused Imperial help to rebuild the city, successfully relying on their own resources. They didnt need outside help, they didnt ask for it, and they didnt want it. Laodicea was too rich to accept help from anyone. Tacitus, the Roman historian, tells us: Laodicea arose from the ruins by the strength of her own resources, and with no help from us.

b. The church of the Laodiceans: Laodicea was also a noted commercial center, and some of its goods were exported all over the world. It is frequently noted that Laodicea prided itself on three things: financial wealth, an extensive textile industry, and a popular eye-salve which was exported around the world.

i. Their main water supply came on a six-mile aqueduct from the hot springs of Hierapolis. Because the water came from hot springs, it arrived unappetizingly lukewarm.

d. The church of the Laodiceans: The church at Laodicea is mentioned by Paul in a somewhat unfavorable light in Colossians 2:1 and 4:16.

Why Is The Number Three So Important In The Bible

As a person journeys through the Bible, there are some patterns and repeated ideas that emerge. Numbers often repeat throughout both the Old and New Testaments, whether directly, or sometimes as a coefficient. Some of these numbers include seven, twelve, and forty. Another important number is three. It is a small number with powerful symbolism.
