Visit The Chapel Of The Holy Cross In Sedona

Holy cross chapel in Sedona, Arizona (a must see church in red rock mountains area)

When driving through the beautiful mountains and valleys of Sedona, it is impossible to miss the Chapel of the Holy Cross. It is predominantly displayed just east of the 179. While there are countless reasons to visit this one of a kind area, the amazing architecture and unique design of the Sedona chapel are an amazing sight to behold. Here is a brief summary of the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the reasons you will not want to miss out on your next visit.

We Care About Our Neighbors

Our members love giving back. Two new programs we are excited about are Hope House of Sedona, a homeless shelter we are working to establish and Creative Child Care Club, an after-school program. We sponsor many charities including Rainbow Acres Ranch, Bwindi, Verde Valley Caregivers. Many CRR members volunteer to cook and serve meals at a local community supper.

This Magnificent Church Is Built Into Sedonas Red Rocks

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is perfectly perched upon and inside Sedona, Arizonas famed red rocks.

This southwestern landmark was completed back in 1956. The chapel, which is built directly into the citys famed red buttes, was commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who sought inspiration from the Empire State Building. She was also a student of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Architects Richard Hein and August K. Strotz helped bring the now-iconic landmark to life. However, building the structure was no easy feat: About 25 tons of rock had to be moved to accommodate for the construction.

The churchs facade is accented with cant-miss features, such as a giant stained-glass artwork, sun-drenched windows, and a staggering 90-foot cross. Its also famous for its expansive Verde Valley views, which have attracted millions of visitors over the years.

Travelers also rave about the sites tranquil atmosphere, which is considered to be one of several sacred vortex sites in Sedona. The vortexes are known for their healing energy. They are popular spots for meditating and yoga, and many travelers leave them feeling renewed and recharged.

The famed church which stands at a whopping 200 feet tall and sandwiched between two massive rock formations has since gone on to win The American Institute of Architects Award of Honor.

Needless to say, this one-of-a-kind, red rock beauty is worth a visit during your next trip to Sedona.

The Woman Who Commissioned The Chapel Of The Holy Cross Was Inspired By The Empire State Building

Voted one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona, the Chapel of the Holy Cross, a Roman Catholic church, seems to cling precariously to the red rocks of the Sedona, Arizona, desert.

The unique church was commissioned by artist and rancher Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who had been inspired by the Empire State Building. A devout Catholic, Staude had an epiphany while staring up at the newly constructed New York skyscraper.

According to an article in Gateway to Sedona, she saw a cross super-imposed on the building and thought What an idea for a church!

Staudes idea was to build something modern, that could speak to people in their time.

God can be worshipped as a contemporarybringing him closer to earth and every one of us, she said.

Her initial idea was to build a skyscraper that would fill a city block was not approved by the archbishop of Los Angeles, where she lived at the time. A plan to build the church overlooking the Danube River was scuttled with the start of World War II. In the end, she settled on the chapel nestled into the red rocks of Sedona.

Upon her death, Staude left the chapel to the Catholic Church, which welcomes people of all denominations and today holds a prayer service there every Monday at 5 p.m.

Chapel Of The Holy Cross Has A Story To Tell

Upon a visit to the Empire State Building in 1932, Marguerite Brunswig Staudes imagination began to play tricks on her as the illusion of a cross appeared within the structure, right before her eyes.

A sculptor, philanthropist and Catholic, Staudes visions of a cross within the Empire State Building started innocently. But, little may she have known that the vision she was formulating would become an artistic and architectural achievement that would define success in her life the Chapel of the Holy Cross.

In the 30s when the Empire State Building had just been constructed, she saw it . She saw this big cross on there and couldnt get this vision out of her mind, said Linda Goldenstein, owner of Goldenstein Gallery. She went back to visit with her parents in California, and she told her father, I want to build this chapel. Somewhere in the world I want to build this chapel. And he said, We want to support you in that.

Goldenstein noted that Staude came from a wealthy upbringing as her father started Brunswick Pharmaceuticals, which allowed her to live a privileged life and create what would become the Chapel of the Holy Cross. But putting privilege aside, seeing her vision through was no walk in the park.

She went through her life, and at one point she was living here in Sedona and flew above the chapel and saw that beautiful area and said, Finally, this is the place, Goldenstein said.

BELL ROCK & COURT HOUSE BUTTE

We started the day walking to Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. I said “walk” and not hike because we didn’t really hike here since we are saving it for Schuerman Mountain. Located between the Village of Oak Creek and Sedona, north of Highway 179, a major access route from I-17 to Sedona.

There are two parking areas: from the south and from the north . A pass is required to park. If you have an “America the Beautiful” pass then it ‘s free, one of the perks of being a senior.

Coming from the Village of Oak Creek, we parked at the south trailhead. You wont miss the Bell Rock since it resembles a giant a bell, hence the name.
