What Does The Bible Say About An Unbelieving Spouse

Days Of Prayer For Your Unbelieving Husband

” UNBELIEVING SPOUSE – WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS? ” 1 CORINTHIANS 7:10-16

Being married to an unbelieving spouse can be extremely difficult. I know because Ive been there. I was married for 14 years and about 7 years ago, gave my life to the Lord. The second I did, our marriage suddenly changed and it was a challenge. All of the sudden, I had new desires.a desire to please the Lord, a desire to not sin, a desire to do what is right, and yet his desires, stayed the same.

It immediately caused a huge rift between us. An unspoken rift that we both could feel. All the sudden, we were on different sides of eternity, and we knew it.

But the books of the Bible and scriptures are clear. In such cases, we dont divorce. We are to remain married to the unbeliever after we accept Christ into our hearts. While there are clear reasons that God allows for divorce, that is not one of them. So, I remained married, and prayed. Many of my prayers are listed below. I hope you find comfort in them as I did during that hard season of my life with a wayward spouse.

What Does It Mean In 1st Corinthians : 14 The Unbelieving Husband Is Sanctified

Question:;

Could you please explain what it meant in 1st Corinthians 7:14 by “the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife”?

Response:;

The issue of divorce when it comes to believers married to non-believers is an emotionally loaded one for two reasons, both of which Paul addresses in this context. On the one hand, it is easy to see how someone who converts to Christianity and the spouse won’t, or finds out after the fact that the spouse is not really a Christian, or realizes too late that the Bible warns against marrying unbelievers for good reason, it is easy to see, I say, how this “problem” of spousal unbelief might lead a faithful follower of Christ to seek dissolution of the marriage for that reason alone. On the other hand, it is also and perhaps equally true that a believer who genuinely loves and cares for an unbelieving spouse, might otherwise feel constrained to try and stay in a “marriage” which has become no marriage in fact simply out of a desire to try and “save” the unbelieving spouse. Both of these approaches are incorrect, and Paul explains that in this section of chapter seven. The “bottom line” of 1st Corinthians 7:13 is that unbelief of the partner is not on its own grounds for divorce. That is certainly not to say, however, that there can be no grounds for divorce from an unbeliever , rather that if this unbelief is the only “problem”, then it is better to stay married.

However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

If an unbeliever abandons the marriage, the other partner is freed from the marriage bond ” rel=”nofollow”>1;Corinthians 7:15).

The Bible does not have a specific teaching about other intolerable situations. But if one partner seriously violates the marriage contract, as by physical/emotional/sexual abuse, illegal activity, financial irresponsibility, etc., the marriage contract has been unilaterally broken. The other partner must take whatever actions are necessary to escape from the situation and to protect self and children. Reconciliation is preferable, but if that is not possible, different church denominations have different procedures for formally ending the marriage.

What Are Some Common Signs Of Neglect

To neglect someone means to fail to care for properly. Neglect can look different in each marriage, but here are some common signs of neglect:

Avoiding eye contact:;If your husband rarely looks you in the eye and resists this form of connection, thats a sign of emotional neglect. Hes refusing, whether intentionally or unintentionally, to connect with you. Its a form of hiding.

Refusing to argue: Some couples might think that never fighting is a good thing, but it can often be a red flag. If your husband walks away during every argument or refuses to discuss conflict, its a sign of neglect.

Constantly feeling lonely: If youre frequently feeling lonely, this is another sign of neglect.

For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy .

The aim of this article is to discover Pauls intended meaning by the use of the word sanctified as he uses it here to instruct the Corinthian believers.; It is universally understood that Paul is not using the word sanctified in the most common New Testament usage.; The sanctification wrought by the Holy Spirit must of necessity follow justification for these two must never be separated.; In his book titled Christian Marriage D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones said, The first principle is that there is nothing which is so utterly unscriptural as to separate justification and sanctification.; So clearly Paul has a different use in mind as he uses the word sanctified.; Additionally, Paul does not refer to the Holy Spirit as the agent of this sanctification at all, but rather the believing spouse is the agent or instrument of this sanctification.

To understand Pauls use of the word sanctified it is paramount that the reader fully understands the meaning of the word itself.; The word sanctify has five significant aspects in its definition:

  • To be set apart for holiness; a separation from everything unholy.
  • It also carries the idea of freeing from sin or purifying.
  • To impart or impute inviolability; this includes the idea of a social sanction.

Am I Expecting Too Much From My Husband

Sometimes we might wonder if the problem is just us. Perhaps were expecting too much from our husbands. After all, they deserve a break from the office and from the kids, too, right? They deserve down time and a chance to veg out with their favorite television show or a few mindless phone games after a busy day at the office. But when does taking time for themselves cross the line into neglect?

Purpose #: To Mirror His Image

After God created the earth and the animals, He said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. The account continues, And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them .

What does it mean to mirror Gods image? Your marriage should exalt God and glorify Him to a world that desperately needs to see who He is. Because were created in the image of God, people who wouldnt otherwise know what God is like should be able to look at us and get a glimpse of Him.

    Attractive Behavior Involves Not Nagging

Does the Bible Say I Can Leave My Abusive Spouse? – How to Leave an Abusive Relationship

Peter says that the disobedient husbands may be won without a word as they observe the pure and reverent behavior of their wives. By without a word he doesnt mean that a wife is to be mute. He means that she must not nag or preach to her husband. Nothing will drive a man further from the Lord than a nagging wife. Solomon said it 3,000 years ago, and its still true, It is better to live in a corner of a roof, than in a house shared with a contentious woman . And, the contentions of a wife are a constant dripping . Nagging will drive your husband crazy, but it wont drive him to Christ.

I heard about a husband who nicknamed his wife Peg although that wasnt her name. When he was asked why, he replied, Well, Peg is short for Pegasus who was an immortal horse, and an immortal horse is an everlasting nag, so thats why I call my wife Peg! Nagging will do one of two things to men: Either it will make him resist and become obstinate, or he will give in to keep the peace. Either response is not good for the wife. If the husband becomes more obstinate, he can become abusive. This creates distance in the relationship. If he gives in to keep the peace, he becomes passive and the wife is put in the role of the decision maker, out from under the covering of blessing and protection that God designed proper authority to be.

Thus attractive behavior involves submission, purity, reverence toward God, and not nagging.

    Gods Purposes For Marriage

Another reason God hates divorce is because it tears at the very heart of Gods redemptive plan for the world. It is interesting to note the conversation between Jesus and the Pharisees in Matthew 19:3-9. When the Pharisees ask, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all? Jesus answers by pointing them to Gods purposes for marriage:

And He answered and said, Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.

Attractive Behavior Involves Doing What Is Right

30 Days of Prayer for Your Unbelieving Husband

You have become Sarahs children if you do what is right. Peter emphasizes this concept . It always occurs in the context of others doing wrong toward us and points to the fact that our behavior shouldnt be determined by how others treat us. Were so prone to react to wrong treatment with more wrong treatment and then to blame our sin on the other persons sin. But God wants us to be prepared to respond to wrongs against us by doing what is right.

If your husband yells at you and you yell back, it escalates the conflict. He will yell louder, then you yell louder yet, and if things get out of hand, he may lose control and say all sorts of nasty things that he wouldnt say when hes more rational or he may even hit you. But if he yells at you and you calmly respond, I can understand why youre upset. What can I do to help? youve just deescalated the quarrel. How can a man fight with that kind of response?

What Are The Biblical Solutions For Solving Marriage Problems

It is no surprise that marriage is the most intimate relationship that two human beings can experience, second only to a relationship with God. Amazingly, marriage brings out the best and worst in most people, as two separate individuals struggle to live as one flesh . It is worth noting here that at the root of most marriage problems is selfishness. In other words, when one or both partners choose to live as though his or her needs deserve top consideration, conflicts result. There are specific Bible verses that address the behavior of both husbands and wives. Some of which are 1 Peter 3:1-8,;Colossians 3:18-19, and;Titus 2:3-5. Even though not addressing marriage directly, ;Philippians 2:3-13 has proven to be an excellent recipe for resolving marriage problems.

    Attractive Behavior Involves Submission

In the same way points back to 2:13 & 2:18. It does not mean that wives are to submit exactly as slaves submit to their masters , but rather it connects this section to the whole discourse on Christian submission to authority. Those who argue for evangelical feminism quickly go to Ephesians 5:21 and point out that both husbands and wives are to submit to one another. They make that verse the allgoverning one and explain 1 Peter as applying only to the first century because of cultural considerations.

But we cant throw out the submission of wives to husbands so easily. Paul recognizes a sense in Christian marriage in which each partner submits to the other under Christ, but he also goes on to state that the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church. There is a sense in which Christ submits Himself to the church in self sacrificing service, but at the same time, clearly He is in authority over the church. Before the late 20th century, it never occurred to scholars to interpret these texts the way modern evangelical feminists do. So I think we must interpret and apply them as written.

Day 1: Submit To Your Husband

What Should I Do if My Spouse is an Unbeliever?

Oh, that word submission! It is a sensitive issue for many. You might be wondering if you still need to submit to your husband if he isnt Christian. The truth is, yes. Now, if he is asking you to sin , then you need to submit to God first, not your husband. But, to everyone else, yes, regardless if your husband is Christian or not, it is the wifes call to submit to her husband, as the church submits to Christ. Today, ask God to;help you submit to your husband, even when it is hard.
