What Does The Bible Say About Fear, Anxiety, and Worry – Watch Your Words // teachable tuesday

Fearing the Lord means to be in reverent awe of His holiness, to give Him complete reverence and to honor Him as the God of great glory, majesty, purity and power. For example, when God revealed Himself to the Israelites at Mount Sinai through thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast, they all trembled in fear because of His great power. They even begged Moses to deliver Gods message to them so they would not have to encounter God Himself . Also, when the psalm writer reflects on God as Creator, he says: Let all the earth fear the Lord let all the people of the world revere Him. For He spoke, and it came to be He commanded, and it stood firm .

Are There Many Bible Verses About Fear

  • Why We Need to Meditate on Bible Verses on Fear
  • Theres an urban legend that the phrase Do not fear appears 365 times in the Bible. I call it an urban legend because I cant prove it. Because the phrasing differs per translation, it gets a little tricky to try and track down that exact phrase.

What I can tell you from my own Bible reading, is that the phrase occurs a lot. Ever since that first occurrence with Adam after the Fall, fear seems to be our natural reaction.

We are afraid when we come into Gods presence. We are afraid in our dealings with our peers. We are afraid in the presence of our enemies. Were afraid of change, afraid when things remain the same. Were afraid of our fears. But I have noticed that God is quick to reassure His people.

    1. He reassures them when they come into His presence. When John had his vision of Jesus, his first response was fear, but Jesus was quick to reassure him.

And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, Do not be afraid I am the First and the Last. Revelation 1:17 NKJV

    2. He reassures them when He gives them a task to do. When Moses died, the mantle of leading the Israelites fell on Joshua. God knew what a difficult task it would be, but He didnt want Joshua to be afraid.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 NKJV

God Is God And We Are Not

What Does the Bible Say about Fear?

Steve Bond, co-lead pastor, Summit Christian Church, Sparks

The Bible urges us to fear God. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge . Having an appropriate reverence and holy respect for God is the beginning point for all true knowledge about spiritual realities.

It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God . God is God and we are not. Recognizing this keeps us sober-minded and humble. Eternity is at stake our choices matter and God is not to be trifled with.

When the Apostle John saw the Risen Jesus in his heavenly splendor as God himself, he fell at his feet as though dead .

I believe one of the great tragedies today is that people have lost all fear of God. However, the day will come when this will change and every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that the Lord is God.

Do Not Be Afraid Is Not A Suggestion Its A Command

We should really examine the way God is telling us to not be afraid. Its not like Hes saying it in a sweet, comforting way. God is not like, there, there my sweet child, itll be okay, dont be afraid. Instead, God is actually quite forcefully telling us do not be afraid. Be strong. Be courageous.

Its almost like God wants us to stand tall and firm and recognize who we are. We are a child of God. God isnt simply trying to make us feel good. Instead we need to know and understand the truth that we truly have nothing to fear as children of God. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. The fear that we feel is not of God and therefore does not have a place in our lives.

    God Loves Us Too Much

What Is Fear? What Does The Bible Say About Fear? Revelation 21 8 Word Study, David Eells, UBM

Theodore W. Payne IV, lead pastor, Bethel AME Church, Sparks

Fear is interesting it brings up weird feelings. Whether it’s the schoolyard bully or tax season, it causes an inward trepidation. There is hesitation toward progression. If we engage further, will we survive?

When I think about God, I dont get that feeling. For those of us who believe in the creation story, we also believe that God is methodical. Therefore, God created human beings for the purpose of engaging in a reciprocal relationship.

The challenge is God remains a mystery and we often fear the unknown. Scripture reminds us that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love …” .

Should we honor, respect, revere God? Definitely! We also acknowledge God’s omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence. God is merciful, gracious and loving. I submit God loves us too much for us to be scared and fearful of engaging in that same love.

    We Gain A Humble Confidence

Finally, fearing God brings a humble confidence and overwhelming spiritual comfort. The NT directly links the fear of the Lord with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit . Those who do not fear God will have little or no sense of his presence and protection. However, those who fear God and obey his Word will experience a deep sense of spiritual security and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. They can be sure that God ultimately will deliver them from death .

1 John 4:18 states, There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. Although this verse may seem contrary to the above information, its all about perspective when we are filled with and washed over by Gods perfect love, we do not need to be afraid of His wrath.

Three: Fear Of The Lord Can Produce Faith

True fear of the Lord causes believers to place their faith and trust in Him alone for salvation. For example, after the Israelites crossed through the Red Sea on dry ground and saw how God destroyed the Egyptian army who came after them, they feared the Lord and put their trust in Him. The psalmist encourages all who fear the Lord to trust in the LordHe is their help and shield . In other words, fearing God produces confidence, hope and trust in Him, which are necessary when we are looking to God for mercy, forgiveness and spiritual salvation . Here, fearing God means to be moved to belief and trust.

Surprising Things The Bible Says About Fear

    BY TIFFANY NICOLE

Its interesting what the Bible says about fear. I had never thought too much about it until my pastor brought it to my attention. One day I was sitting in church listening to the sermon. Halfway through the sermon, my pastor said something very interesting. He said, do you know what the most frequent command in the Bible is?. He paused for a moment allowing us time to think about it.

Surely the most frequent command is something like do not sin, do not steal, do not kill others, or something else along those lines. Or maybe it is that we should love others and treat others the way we wanted to be treated. It turns out, it wasnt any of those. While its true these are commandments from God, none of them is the most frequent command in the Bible.

God Promises To Help Us From Our Fears

Whats beautiful about this command is God doesnt just say, do not be afraid and then end of sentence. Oh no. Instead, God typically finishes this command with what He will do for us. Theres usually some sort of way God plans on providing or comforting us from, or during, our fears.

    For example:

    • Isaiah 41:10, Sodo not fear, for I am with you do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
    • Isaiah 35:4, Be strong, do not fear your God will come, he will come with vengeance with divine retribution he will come to save you.
    • Deuteronomy 31:6, Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you he will never leave you nor forsake you.

How To Fight Against Fear Of The Unknown

When you struggle with worry , try this instead:

Pray and bring petitions and requests to God.

Instead of letting your worry weigh you down, tell God the things you are worried about. Tell Him boldly, honestly, holding nothing back. He may not give you what you ask for, but He does promise a peace that passes understanding.

If you are worried about finances, ask God for provision. If you are worried about your health or the health of a loved one, ask God for healing or protection. If you are worried about COVID-19, ask God for deliverance and mercy.

    Be thankful.

Gratitude does wonders for an anxious heart. Find something to thank God for amid your worry. It will not take long to consider how He has taken care of you in the past.

Let the peace of God guard your heart.

When fear of the unknown weighs down your heart, rest on the peace that God promises when you pray. Lean on that peace, and let it guard your heart against more worry and anxiety. Hold onto it like an anchor that can keep you grounded. That peace can protect you from the debilitating effects of anxiety.

Focus on what is good and true instead.

This is the last passage of this article of Bible verses about anxiety because the message is simple. God does not want his people to worry because He takes care of his people. He asks you to trust Him to take care of you, to give you what you need, to be with you and comfort you when suffering comes.

What Does The Bible Say About Fear And Sickness

Fear not, for I am with you be not dismayed, for I am your God I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.Do not fear the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid. Do not fear him, declares the LORD, for I am with you, to save you and to deliver you from his hand.

We Need To Be Reminded Again And Again

Does the Bible actually say fear is a spirit?

The fact that do not be afraid is repeated again and again tells me that we as humans heavily battle fear. We are constantly controlled and at odds with this thing known as fear. God is aware of this, which is why He is constantly encouraging us that we have nothing to fear and that He will be with us. Which brings me to my next point.

Four: God Is Angry About Sin

Finally, to fear God involves recognizing that He is angry about sin and has the power to punish those who stand arrogantly against Him and break His laws . When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, they were afraid and tried to hide from Gods presence . Moses experienced this aspect of the fear of God when he spent forty days and nights praying for the sinful Israelites: I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for He was angry enough with you to destroy you . In the NT, the author of Hebrews acknowledges Gods coming vengeance and judgment, and then writes: It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God . This type of fear is to be afraid, especially if you are caught on the wrong side of Gods justice.
