Use Your Grief To Help Others

Biblical Comfort for those who Mourn

You may not be able to think about being a blessing to others at this time, but trust that God will bring you to that place in the future. Be willing to receive help from others and, in time, try to comfort others.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 2 Corinthians 1:3, 4

Inviting Jesus Into Our Grief

  • Reflect on the responses of grief in Mary and Martha. With whom do you identify? How are others you know responding to the current mourning on your campus?
  • Focus on the part of the passage where Jesus meets the person representing feelings you have. Meditate on Jesus coming to you as he did to Martha and Mary. Think about Jesus also coming to others in their grief.
  • Also read verses 38-43, and describe the response of Jesus and others in this group of people. Invite God to come into our own experience of helplessness over death and evil personally and as a community.

As Christians We Are Given Hope

Probably the majority of funerals we attend will have the verses of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 read to the crowd. They really are comforting words.

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Paul is writing to the Thessalonian believers. They knew the Lord as their Savior and Paul tells them that death for other Christians is merely a temporary state. Those loved ones who have died before us will be resurrected and we will spend eternity with them in Gods presence.

    You Will Be Comforted

The comfort that Jesus offers to all who mourn with a godly sorrow is that the sin that they repent over can come to an end in their lives. Isaiah 61:3 says that Jesus came with glad tidings: To comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning. Are you one who mourns in Zion? Are you tired, not just of the consequences of your sin, but also of the fact that it keeps happening?

Are you brokenhearted over your inadequacy to be genuinely good to others? Do you see how far you are from living the life described in the Bible? Do you grieve that you are bound and are a prisoner of the sin that dwells within you? If you can answer yes, you will be comforted because your godly sorrow will produce repentance, which leads to action, to obedience and, ultimately, to salvation to life. This is why it is written in Ecclesiastes 7:3, Sorrow is better than laughter, for by a sad countenance the heart is made better. Your mourning will be replaced with the oil of joy and gladness.

    Blessed are those who mourn!
