Bible Verses About Curses

He also loved cursing, so it came to him And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.

Let them curse, but You bless When they arise, they shall be ashamed,But Your servant shall be glad.

And I will bless those who bless you,And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.

The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked,But He blesses the dwelling of the righteous.

How shall I curse whom God has not cursed? And how can I denounce whom the Lord has not denounced?

Cursed be the one who does the Lords work negligently,And cursed be the one who restrains his sword from blood.

Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying,So a curse without cause does not alight.

But it shall come about, if you do not obey the Lord your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name, says the Lord of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart.

Cursed be the day when I was born Let the day not be blessed when my mother bore me!

Whats The Deal With Christians And Cussing

No, seriously. Is there a deal? Is it a sin to say cuss words? Theyre just words, so whats the big deal? What if youre just joking around? And if cussing IS wrong, why do so many Christians cuss casually without conviction?

I got these questions from some high school kids in my husbands and my small group recently, and to be honest I didnt know how to answer them.

My whole life Ive been told not to cuss . While I felt in my heart cussing was wrong, I never stopped to ask my four year olds favorite question ?? Why?

This is why I love high schoolers who are new in their faith , they teach me so much more than I could teach myself:

That its important to understand the reasons for the standards we set in our lives.

They remind me that when we are bold & humble enough to ask the simple questions, our faith can be radically deepened.

SO, Im asking the question.

Im asking for me.

Im asking for you.

Im asking for our children.

Im asking for all of us.

Is it sinful to say cuss words? And why?

The short answer is YES. But stick with me, because the long answer is one I think we really need.

1. There isnt a list of forbidden cuss words Its more dangerous than that.

Paul warns us in Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come from your mouth, but only what is good for building someone up in need.

Then he says in Ephesians 5:4 Nor should there be any obscenity, foolish talk or crude joking, which are out of place.

And its working.

What Does The Bible Say About Swearing

Dear Roger,

What does the Bible say about swearing?

Sincerely, David

Dear David,

Swearing is as old as the human race. The Bible is filled with examples of people who swore. Let me share and comment on several verses which apply and then share several Biblical principles that might help us all in determining our level of swearingor not swearing!

But, first lets define the word. Swear has two main usages. First, it is used in the context of swearing an oath. To swear means to make a solemn declaration, invoking a deity, or a sacred person or thing, to confirm the honesty or truth of the declaration. One example of swearing an oath is swearing on a Bible to tell the truth and nothing but the truth in a court of law. Jesus denounced this practice in Matthew 5:33-37: Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord. But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is Gods throne or by the earth, for it is his footstool or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your Yes be Yes, and your No,No anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

In addition, the word, swear, may also be defined as using abusive, violent, or blasphemous language. Words like, S-O-B and G-D, to initialize just a few words, are good examples of this second definition of swearing.

Make A Difference – Church On A Mission

Even today, in many cultures, witch doctors or shamans put curses on people through demonic powers. In some cultures, for example, voodoo is practiced. This includes such practices as sticking pins in a doll made in the image of a person, usually with some of that persons hair, fingernail clippings, and so forth incorporated into the doll. Hateful words are projected as the doll is stabbed over and over. There also are more gruesome practices used. However, with all evil witchcraft rituals, it is the hatred and evil projected from these people that is aimed at the targeted person that causes the harm. The curses spoken over that doll do not come to pass because of the doll or the pins. There is no power in those inanimate objects. They come to pass because of the demonic power operating through the person speaking forth the curses.

In many cultures, other than Western Societies, people have no problem understanding these curses and blessings, because the presence of demonic beings is very real to them. In fact, in many places, they leave offerings to appease evil spirits, for the purpose of warding them off so they will leave them alone.

If you have been affected by a curse such as listed above, we have good news for you. By accepting Jesus, you can be free from demonic oppression and actually have authority over the devil and his curses instead of his spirits having power over you or your family.

What About Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem

Another verse people always bring up when they hear me question their unquestioning support or allegiance to Israel is this verse:

Psalm 122:6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure.

Christians take this passage in various mistaken ways:

  • A command to pray for Israel
  • Evidence we should support Israel
  • A promised blessing if you do the above.
  • What this thinking misses is that Psalm 122 is a song:

Psalm 122:1 A Davidic song of ascents. I rejoiced with those who said to me, Let us go to the house of the LORD.

This is not Jesus or even Moses speaking its David. This is not a command or promise for every Bible reader to pick up and direct at themselves. Its a song in the book of Psalms written by a Jew about going up to Jerusalem for the pilgrim feasts three times a year. He wrote it for an Israelite audience who would have interest and inclination to pray for Jerusalems peace. It was their capital. Youre free to pray for its peace or the peace of your own national capital instead.

Clean Up Your Speech: The Bible Makes It Clear

Paul also gave us positive advice on how to use our wordsnot to cursebut to bless others. He wrote in Ephesians 4:29-30: Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to the needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

The meaning of unwholesome talk is rather obvious. One of the purposes of our talk is to build others upaccording to their needs. This implies that we know what their needs are. They may need comfort, guidance, encouragement, acceptance, approval or even loving rebukes. Can you imagine what our homes would be like if nothing but wholesome talk came out of our mouths?

When all is said and done the Bible makes it very clear that we should clean up our speech. Why? Because Jesus teaches that unclean words come from a dirty heart. Our light to the world is extinguished and no one sees Jesus in us .

Jesus also says that our unclean words lead us into depravity and sin. Our Christian purity is flushed down the toilet.

So what should we do when it comes to cursing and swearing? We read the Bible often. Gods Words are like Ivory soap. They purify your heart and uplift your thoughts.

We filter our mouths and think and say wholesome and positive things.

We follow Pauls advice, and experience peace and blessing.

Well, David, thanks for asking such a timely and relevant question.

    Love, Roger

    Spiritual Protection Against Satanic Attacks

Before we go any further, let me share with you the spiritual tools I use to protect myself from Satanic attacks–including curses. Perhaps you will find one or more of these practices helpful in navigating the spiritual waters of life.

First and foremost I pray for God to encircle me with a spiritual hedge of protection to insulate me from any personal or demonic designs. After all, if God put a hedge around Job that Satan couldn’t penetrate without God’s permission, then He can erect one around me. I pray Job 1:10: “Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.” I want the protection and I want the blessing of prosperity as well.

Next, I try to keep my life righteous and holy so that I open no door and give no opportunity for any curse to debilitate me in any way. I pray Proverb 26:2: “Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest.”

Then, I try never to leave the house spiritually naked. I want to be clothed in the armor of God against any spiritual attack. I pray Ephesians 6:10-17:

In addition, I think of people who have hurt me. Instead of wishing them evil and harm, I try to pray for their blessing and prosperity.

After all, Jesus instructed us in Luke 6:28 to: “Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

    Sincerely, Roger

    What About Swearing

Your Questions, Honest Answers: “Am I cursed? If so, how do I remove a curse??

Occasionally, too, some will say we ought not to swear, as in making oaths. This can get confusing when the Bible seems contradictory. In some places Scripture admonishes us to keep the oaths that we make. For example, Numbers 30:2 tells us, When a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

But Jesuswhose teaching was a sum of all the prophets and lawsaid:

But I say to you, do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply Yes or No anything more than this comes from evil .

    Is Cursing A Sin

Is cursing a sin? What does the Bible say about cussing?

Many Christians have a pretty strong conviction about how to answer these questions. They have Bible verses loaded up and ready to fire out. But I think weve oversimplified these questions.

I know most people want a black and white answer. Is swearing a sin, yes or no? But the Bible doesnt reduce these questions to a simple answer. Instead it challenges us and calls us to something bigger.

We will look at the question, is it a sin to cuss? but I think as we look at that a larger truth will be revealed thats more important than our use of cuss words.

Before we get further into is swearing a sin? we need to investigate the Bible. Well start by looking at how weve softened the language in the Bible and then we will answer the question, what does the Bible say about cussing?

    Lets dive in.
