Why cant I hear from God?
I can not even begin to count how many times I have been in conversation with a friend and spoken these words. Hearing the voice of God, discerning His voice, and desiring Old testament like direction would be so useful in this time of information overload. It is quite exhausting when everywhere you turn there is a new avenue to get connected to others and to outside voices. There is advice on every topic. A how-to about nearly everything under the sun.
And yet, we still have a longing in our core to have a direct connection to the ultimate information source and hear the voice of God. We speak to God often, with requests, questions, and fears adding to those external voices we hear. Our prayers are full of us speaking, but we fail to hear God, because our prayer time often ends when we run out of words.

How Do I Get Help If I Am Hearing Voices
You may decide to get help if you dont like hearing voices or you are concerned about them. You can get help from:
- The NHS
- Self help
How can the NHS help me?
You can speak to your GP about your concerns. They will be able to talk to you about treatment options and coping strategies. You dont have to do what your GP thinks that you should do. But you should listen to them. Make sure that you understand the pros and cons of your treatment options before you make a decision.
Your GP should not give you antipsychotic medication without first talking to a psychiatrist. Your GP should refer you to a secondary mental health team if this is the first time that you have heard voices and asked for help.
You should be assessed quickly. A secondary mental health team will usually be called the:
- early intervention team
- community mental health team , or
- crisis team.
In some areas of the country you can refer yourself to secondary mental health teams. They are NHS teams who help people that hear voices. EITs specialise in helping people who hear voices for the first time. But they arent available in all areas of England. To find your local secondary mental health team you can try the following.
- You can ask your GP for their details.
- You can call NHS 111.
- Use an internet search engine. Use a term like community mental health team in Cheshire or early intervention in psychosis Camden.

Self-help
Hearing Gods Still Small Voice
There are times when the Lord will speak to us in a still small voice. This can be very contrary to what we think God should talk like. We expect the powerful wind, a big shaking like an earthquake, or a roaring firebut nope!
We want God to be LOUD! But the Holy Spirit decides to whisper to us.
Theses whispers can look like a passing thought, an impression, a strong sense of knowing. These things can be very real and powerful ways God speaks. I will go more into impressions and sensing in the next part.
The Lord said, Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by. Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, What are you doing here, Elijah? 1 Kings 19:11-13

A Closer Look At John : 37
The belief that no one has heard the voice of the Father is entirely built on one single passage John 5:37.
We read:
And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.
At first look, this verse may suggest that no one has really heard the voice of the Father in the past until the present. However, examining this passage would give us a better understanding.
Notice the exact words that Yahshua used. He said, YOU have neither heard His voice at any time.
It is worth noting that Christ didnt say, No one, but rather, He used the pronoun, You.
Now, there are two possible ways to interpret this. You could possibly refer to all of mankind OR it could only be referring to the people whom Yahshua was speaking to at that time.
So, how are we going to solve this?
We need to read the CONTEXT of the story.
You can read the entire Chapter of John 5 to get the context, but let me simply highlight a few points.
Chapter 5 of John starts with this opening statement:
In the following verses, we now see the discourse between Yahshua and the Jews who wanted to KILL him. During this discussion, this is where Yahshua made His statement, You have neither heard His voice at any time.
From the context, we could read that Yahshua is only speaking to the Jews and not necessarily addressing to mankind in general.
Tuning Out The Other Voices Around Us
In the book Daring to Live on the Edge, Youth With a Mission founder Loren Cunningham points out that impressions on our spirit will come from one of four sources: your own mind the mind of others the mind of Satan and the mind of God.
God has given us authority in Christ to silence the other sources and clear the way to hear Gods voice and be confident that it is God speaking.
Just before ascending into heaven, the Risen Lord Jesus said, All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations . Earlier, when Jesus commissioned his disciples, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, sending them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick .
After this Jesus sent out 72 others to do the same . They returned with joy and said to Jesus, Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name. Jesus replied, I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven . We know that Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth. And Jesus gives us his authority to silence the enemy.

Seven Keys To Hearing God’s Voice
What am I going to do with the rest of my life? Where should I go to school? Should I take this job, or is there something better on the horizon? Who should I marry?
Life is a never-ending series of choices. Can we know whether we are making the right decisions? Should we consult our horoscope? Maybe we should call the psychic hot-line? Do we go with what the experts are saying or rely on our gut-feeling?
Should we look to the stars — or should we seek the Maker of the stars?
I recently received an e-mail in response to my article, The Harness of the Holy Spirit in which a CBN.com reader makes these thought-provoking statements:
“Your article is typical of many books I have read. Everyone talks about doing what the Holy Spirit says, but you do not state how you ‘know’ it is the voice of GOD. I have yet to read any book or article that can lay that out. It is easy to say The LORD told me to leave this or do that, and I was blessed down the road because of it. Anyone who can present a way one can actually know that the voice they are hearing is from GOD, not man or Satan, would change the world. That’s probably why the world hasn’t changed.”
Well I have good news for my friend, and for you — God wants to speak to us, and yes, you can ‘know’ that you hear His voice.
It’s the same with our relationship with God. He talks, we listen. We talk, He listens.
He wants to talk to us. And He wants us to listen and talk to Him, too.
That’s the question of the ages, isn’t it?

God Is The Source Of All Wisdom
The Book of James invites us to make a request to God for the wisdom we need. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you . God wants us to ask for his wisdom and will generously give it to us.
In Psalm 100, the psalmist reminds us that the Lord himself is our shepherd and that we are his people, the sheep of his pasture . In the New Testament, Jesus identifies himself as the good shepherd who is willing to lay down his life for the sheep .

Hearing The Voice Of God Through Impressions & Sensing
Impression or sensing something can be God telling us something. This is not to be confused with suspicion. It can be a deep knowing.
When I was 10 years old I wanted to go to this slumber party, but my mom didnt feel right about it. She had such a strong sense that it would be a bad idea. But I begged my mom to let me go. I mean what 10-year-old doesnt want to go to a party?
So, she reluctantly shrugged off the feeling and thought perhaps she was being overly protective.
At the time she didnt know much about the prophetic and didnt pray about the feeling she was having. Long story short, I did go to the birthday party.
I ended up in the hospital though. A rattle snake bit me when I was in yard playing with the other kids.
In the Word, we see that in Acts 27 that the apostle Paul perceived that the ship wasnt going to make it. You can read the verses below.
Now when much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous because the Fast was already over, Paul advised them, saying, Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives. Acts 27:9-10
That word perceived is there in Greek. According to the Strong Concordance it is first meaning discern. Interesting enough they use the intensively.

Voice Hearing In The Gospels
We can only speculate on what actual experiences of voice hearing, if any, lie behind the gospel texts. As narratives, they include accounts of a variety of events, some of which might be construed as incorporating voice hearing experiences. The voices angelic, divine, and demonic are heard at key junctures in the narrative, affirming and announcing the significance of the birth of Jesus, his identity as Son of God, and his resurrection from the dead. They are heard by Jesus himself, by the disciples, and by others too. Whilst John the Baptist appears at the outset as a prophet in the Hebrew tradition, and angelic messengers appear at various points to speak on behalf of God, the emphasis is not on Gods voice as heard through such messengers, but rather on Jesus himself as Gods son, towards whom these messengers point. The central voice that of Jesus is therefore not that of a disembodied or visionary voice, but rather that of a visible human speaker, who is bodily present. This voice, conveyed by the text, takes centre stage. Even the heavenly voice at the baptism and transfiguration serves primarily to affirm the identity of Jesus as Son of God. In an inverse fashion, the voice of Satan serves a similar function within the narrative. Questioning what has been said by the divine voice at Jesus baptism, but being out-manoeuvred by Jesus, it is eventually silenced and shown to be false.
Hearing God In The Silence
I stood at the window with my eyes closed, basking in the weak winter sunlight. I spoke these simple words, Lord, you are my King. You alone are worthy of praise. I waited in silence and heard the words, I see you. My tea kettle whistled, and the moment was over.
I went back to my computer and googled Bible verse I see you and heres the first thing I found:
For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. 2 Chronicles 16:9a

God has a voice. He is constantly speaking. But the messages he sends come through many different channels. Sometimes it is words we hear. Other times it could appear as a vision that we see. For some, it is just acknowledging and knowing the nudges of God.
We have five physical senses. We receive input through sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. We react and interpret the physical realm around us according to the messages received through those senses. As children growing up, we learned a hot stove will hurt. Vinegar tastes sharp and acidic. Bright lights make us squint.
Just as our physical sense respond to the environment, our spiritual senses also react. But like a child, we must understand the signals we receive and how to interpret them. Maturity comes through our relationship with God. Without him, we remain spiritually dense:
The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 2 Corinthians 4:4
God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see and ears that could not hear to this very day. Romans 11:8
God uses our spiritual senses to communicate with us. We each have at least one special way to hear from God. He tailors a language unique to our person.
