Be strong and courageous . We see these words on everything from T-shirts to keychains to the front of fancy leather journals. Its uplifting, its inspiring, and it looks great painted in loopy calligraphy on a little wooden sign.
I love carrying Scripture around with me as much as the next Christian, but there are a couple of problems with commercializing this verse: One, its not the whole verse and two, its often taken out of context.
Since this verse is shortened and misinterpreted so often, its important for us to explore what people often take it to mean, compare it to the verses actual context within the chapter its taken from, and what it means for us today.

What Is The Meaning Of The Be Strong And Courageous Bible Verses In Joshua
Because our ultimate goal in life is to finish our race well in Jesus Christ, it is important to stand up to life pressures and conquer our fears with His help.
Joshua chapter 1 is a great chapter to meditate on in this regard.
In the chapter, Moses has died and now Joshua, his second in command, is responsible for leading the children of Israel into the Promised Land.
However, Gods people would have to fight the enemies who already occupied the land and drive them out. Not an easy task!
The Lord spoke to Joshua directly to remind him that the land was theirs to possess. He also gave Joshua a promise from the start:
No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.
Joshua 1:5-7
The Lord assured Joshua that he would have the ability to stand up against any enemy. Not only that but his success was guaranteed: The Lord would be with Joshua and promised to never leave nor forsake him.
A priceless promise!
The Lord is the basis of our confidence too because He is:
- Omnipresent
Just like with Joshua, whatever resource is needed to meet the moment, the Lord provides it.
After God gave Joshua promises, He gave him the plan for obtaining them:

Scripture On Strength In Difficult Times
- Psalm 9:9-10 The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.
- Psalm 119:28 My soul is weary with sorrow strengthen me according to your word.
- 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christs power may rest on me. That is why, for Christs sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
- 1 Peter 5:10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
When you’re feeling tired and overwhelmed, where do you turn for strength? At only 10 years old, Mawulom is no stranger to hardship. His father, left blind due to an accident at his work, was unable to support the family financially. It was shortly after when his mother, Ami, became gravely ill. Unable to afford the expensive treatment necessary, the family opted for herbal remedies instead. The outlook was bleak.

How To Be Strong And Courageous In Spite Of Fear
I will say here that being courageous doesnt mean that you wont be afraid. That wouldnt be realistic. Instead, it means to press through the fear when you feel afraid. In fact, sometimes your knees will shake or your anxiety will rise. Your mind may even start racing away with all kinds of what if thoughts. But when this happens, thats when you have to kick into overdrive and let the word of God take over. Thats when you have to plunge through your fear and trust in Him. You have to trust God beyond your fears.
Trust me. I know this is far from easy. I have been there too many times to know that this can be tough. Personally, when things have looked dark, scary, or intimidating in my life, Ive had to trust God beyond my fears. And it hasnt been easy. However, thats when the Lord would remind me, Be strong and courageous, Courtnaye. I am with you. And I would have to repeat those words over and over again, and then walk in His strength and courage.
Canaanite Womans Couragean Example To The Women Gentiles
The 8-versed Exposure Of The Canaanite Woman
One note-worthy character in the Bible is the Canaanite woman who asked Jesus to heal her child. The 8-versed passage is a brief account of the conversation between the Savior and the gentile mother.
Matthew 15: 21 tells us that he went to withdraw to Tyre and Sidons district, where he met the said woman. The demon had possessed the womans daughter, and she knew that only Jesus could help her.
The Powerful Exchange of Words
The disciples were annoyed that they wanted to send her away. The brief conversation of Jesus and the Canaanite woman was so powerful, which elevates our faith standards.
Jesus said, I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.
But she came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, help me.
And he answered, It is not right to take the childrens bread and throw it to the dogs.
She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table.
The story concluded with Jesus commending her for her great faith! And the daughter received healing right that instant. Isnt the Canaanite woman truly courageous?

My son loves to wear the appropriate attire for whatever activity hes participating in. If he is the catcher in a family game of baseball, he will run into his room to find the best baseball outfit. Building something requires a tool belt and hard hat. If cooking in the kitchen, he will grab an apron.
But nothing changes his demeanor like donning a superhero cape. He is suddenly stronger and more courageous because what he wears affects his attitude.
The mom in me wants to add a cape to his daily wardrobe because I know that as he grows, he will face many situations where strength and courage are needed and I want my boy to stand strong. But how can this happen when he is so young and the world needs more courageous people?
In Ephesians 6 Paul tells us to put on the full armor of God so that we can stand strong. Part of the armor is the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Its time to arm my son with Gods truth that will provide him with unexplainable strength and courage.
We can teach kids about courage by memorizing Bible verses and applying them when teachable moments arise. When my son was scared of the thunder, we sang Psalm 56:3. When fear keeps him from taking the first step in a new situation, I pray over him Isaiah 41:10. When he is older, I will point him to verses that he can post in his room.

Persecuted But Not Abandoned

What Does It Mean To Be Strong
Part of being strong and of a good courage means trusting in the Lord as our true source of strength. In Joshuas case, he didnt have all the answers for the challenges before him. But he was counseled to go forward anyway, acting in faith. Like Joshua, we seldom have all the answers to our personal challenges. But God promises that when we turn to Him for guidance, we will succeed. God is all-powerful and all-knowing. He has the answers and the strength we need to face any challenge before us. He was with Joshua, and He will be with us.

And the word also reassures us that, You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! . Hes got us, sis. So lets be strong and courageous!
