How Should Christians View Depression

Its clear, then, that depression isnt just a problem today, but one people struggled with hundreds of years before Christ. They might have called it anything from melancholy to spirit possession, but it caused great suffering, despair, and in some cases, suicide.

It was a real, pressing problem, one that started wars and leveled leaders and one that had no easy solution. Time after time, the Bible presents stories of depressed people crying out to God, begging for help or for Him to just take the pain away. Its not identified as a sin but an earthly hardship, perhaps much like oppression or even poverty, which Jesus himself said we will always have with us .

Do Not Be Anxious Over Anything

Once you have given your problems to the Lord Jesus, they are in good hands. The Bible clearly tells us to trust in the Lord with ALL our mind and to not lean on our own understanding of things further we are to acknowledge Him in all our ways for our paths to be straighten .

At the end of the day, we will have hard moments come upon us. How we respond is what really makes the difference. The Bible tells us that we should not be depressed, but if we are, we have our God to take our problems to.

We can go to the Lord to get the answers we need and help we need to get out of depression. We do not need to be anxious over anything but to simply stay in prayer and supplication with thankfulness to our God .

Job A Biblical Example Of Grief

What Does The Bible Say About Grieving A Loved One

The best place to start in the Bible to see different aspects of grief is in the book of Job. In chapter one and the beginning of chapter two in Job we read that Job had suffered great loss. According to God, he was perfect and upright, feared God, and avoided evil . Yet, he became the target of Satans attacks. In the process, his servants, his livestock, and his children were killed.

When Job learned of this he tore his clothes, shaved his head, and fell upon the ground and worshiped God. When people grieve, sometimes they do unexpected things that are out of character. Likewise, cultural norms sometimes dictate how people grieve. In Jobs case he did the uncharacteristic, yet culturally expected thing in tearing his clothes and shaving his head. However, as a man of God, he immediately fell down and worshiped.

Not long after, Job came under personal attack by Satan . He suffered with boils so severe that he took broken pottery to scrape off the scabs. As if this was not enough, even Jobs wife turned on him saying, Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die. Despite this, Job said nothing against God .

Verses Of Hope Look To God

If we think it is unchristian to struggle, be depressed, broken hearted or despairingread your Bible again! Our own savior was called a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief in Isaiah 53:3. And David records his many struggles in the Psalms. One poignant verse, Psalm 42:11, quotes David, Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? He definitely knew what it was like to feel depressed. However, the verse finishes with this hopeful, upward-gazing phrase, Hope in God for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. He set his will to praise God, even during the hard times. Like Paul Asay suggests, we need to look up. Bible verses of hope help us do that.

Bible verses of hope and coping skills can help many find a strong rope of support in the deep end of depression. It is not a cure, but an offering of help. Take the next right step forward.

We Should Show Active Love For God And Others

Love for God and others is essential because we all at some time or another find ourselves sucked into a vortex of morbid self-involvement, which keeps us from following the heavenly prescription given by the Great Physician, the medicine that many need above all else .

Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest? He said to him, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.

Matthew 22:36-40

When we begin to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and demonstrate love to others, we find true hope in God’s active love.
