Bible Verses About Possessions

But on Mount Zion there will be those who escape,And it will be holy. And the house of Jacob will possess their possessions.

Here for this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you for I do not seek what is yours, but you for children are not responsible to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.

B What Does The Bible Say

Following Bible principles can help us meet our physical necessities:Christians must work, not be lazy, and avoid foolish or sinful waste of money. But does the Bible promise or teach us to expect or topursue material abundance as part of our reward forserving God?

The gospel gives many examples of faithful servants of God who lived inpoverty.

They did not have wealth, luxuries, or abundance, let alone”everything they may desire.”

Luke 16:19-22,25 – Lazarus was so poor he begged for crumbs, while therich man fared sumptuously. Comfort for this servant of God came afterdeath, not during this life.

Matthew 8:20 – Jesus had nowhere to lay His head. Does this mean He wasunfaithful to God?

Acts 3:3-6 – When the lame man asked for alms, Peter said “silverand gold have I none.”

2 Corinthians 11:27 – Paul was “often” in hunger, thirst, cold, and nakedness. Why didn’t he solve these problems by sending acontribution to a faith healer and expecting a miracle?

2 Corinthians 8:2 – Macedonian Christians experienced “deeppoverty” yet gave generously to help other needy Christians inJerusalem. Note the difference. Paul taught Christians to give money to helpother needy people. But prophets of the gospel of health and wealth tellneedy people to send donations to them, and then God will makeall the poor people wealthy.

The gospel warns us to avoid strong desires for more than physicalnecessities.

Does Jesus Call Us To Give Away All Our Possessions

It would seem that Jesus calls us to give away all our possessions.

So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

This is a scary verse. I dont know about you, but I like my possessions, and I dont want to have to give them all away. In fact, when I was in grad school, I found this verse so troubling that I wrote a paper on it. I spent hours researching and reflecting on these words, and at the end of it all, I realized what my problem was: I was reading the verse out of context.

One of the cardinal rules of biblical interpretation is that we have to read everything in context. We cant just take a single verse in isolation and expect to understand it correctly, and this one is no exception. In particular, this verse is part of a larger unit of teaching , so to properly interpret it, we have to figure out its role in that unit. Plus, Lukes Gospel has a lot to say about money and material possessions, so we cannot find its entire teaching on the subject in any one verse. Instead, we have to let this verse be balanced by others.

And that is what I want to do here. I want to look at this difficult teaching in light of both its immediate context and the larger context of the entire Gospel. When we do that, well see that Jesus is not really telling us to give away everything we own. Instead, he is calling us to follow him in a way that is arguably even more radical.

What does the Bible say about materialism?

The article begins,

For decades, John MacArthur has railed on prosperity preachers, likening them to greed mongerers who led First Century cults. Recently, hes also taken aim at scandal-plagued evangelical leaders, like the late apologist Ravi Zacharias and former Hillsong Pastor Carl Lentz, saying these celebrities were in ministry only for the money. Thats why liars and frauds and false teachers are in business, MacArthur said in a recent sermon. False teachers always do it for the same reasonfilthy lucre, money. Yet according to financial statements and tax forms obtained by The Roys Report, John MacArthur and his family preside over a religious media and educational empire that has over $130 million in assets and generates more than $70 million a year in tax-free revenue. MacArthur and his family and related companies have been paid more than $12.8 million from ministry and donor funds. And MacArthur owns three luxury homes worth millions.

Earthly Possessions Can Be Used For Heavenly Purposes

I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings .

God blesses His people with the specific purpose that they will in turn be a blessing to others. When we give an abundance of our wealth to spread the gospelwe are using wealth to build up the kingdom of God. Our finances that support missionaries and Christ-driven ministries allow the resources to flow so that the Good News will be spread to the ends of the earth.

Beware Of The Snare Of Materialism

What Does The Bible Say About Taking Action

3. What is materialism?

3 What is materialism? It is a preoccupation with material things rather than spiritual riches. Materialism is rooted in ones desires, priorities, and focus in life. It creates in us a yearning for a lot of material possessions. A materialistic person may not have a lot of money or make expensive purchases. Even poor people can become victims of materialism and can neglect seeking first the Kingdom.Heb. 13:5.

4. How does Satan use the desire of the eyes?

4 Satan uses his worlds commercial system to seduce us into believing that having material things beyond our actual needs is necessary for the enjoyment of life. He is adept at appealing to the desire of the eyes. The world offers every kind of material thing, from the superb to the absurd, some of which look very enticing. Have you ever purchased something, not because you needed it, but because it caught your eye in an advertisement or a store display? Did you later realize that you could have lived the rest of your life without it? Such nonessential things only complicate our life and weigh us down. They can ensnare us and distract us from our spiritual routine of studying the Bible, preparing for and attending meetings, and sharing regularly in the ministry. Remember, the apostle John warned: The world is passing away and so is its desire.

5. What can happen to those who use most of their energy to get more things?

6. What lesson do we learn from Baruch?

Earthly Possessions Are Inferior To The Heavenly One

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things .

Before we knew Christ, we set our minds on everything the world views as valuable. Yet when we gave our hearts to Christ, theres an immediate recognition of the fading value of material things. Through the knowledge and presence of the Holy Spirit, we begin to desire greater heavenly rewards more so than the earthly ones.

Hold earthly possessions with an open hand so that God can give or take away for His great purpose in your life.

Jehovah Cares For Our Material Needs

Christians and Material Possessions

8, 9. Why should we not worry too much about the things we need? What did Jesus know about humans and their needs?

8 Read Matthew 6:25. When Jesus told his listeners to stop being anxious about lives, it was the same as telling them to stop worrying. They were anxious about things they ought not be anxious about. Jesus said to stop thatand for good reason. Needless anxiety or worry, even about legitimate concerns, can divide a persons mind and distract him, shutting out the more important spiritual matters of life. Jesus was so concerned for his disciples that he warned them about this dangerous tendency four more times in his sermon.Matt. 6:27, 28, 31, 34.

9 Why did Jesus tell us not to worry about what we will eat, or drink, or wear? Are not such things some of the major necessities of life? They certainly are! If we lack the means to obtain these things, will we not naturally be anxious? Of course we will, and Jesus knew that. He was well-aware of peoples day-to-day needs. More than that, he knew of the difficult conditions facing his disciples who centuries later would live during the last days, characterized by critical times hard to deal with. Such conditions include unemployment, inflation, food shortages, and abject poverty that many experience. Yet, Jesus also realized that life means more than food and the body than clothing.

10. When Jesus taught his followers how to pray, what did he say should be most important in their life?

Bible Verses About Hoarding

While it is good to save we must be on guard from hoarding. The world we live in today loves wealth and material possessions, but we are to be set apart from the world. You cant have two gods its either you serve God or money. Sometimes its not money that people hoard its things that could easily benefit the poor that we have no use for.

Do you have a room full of stuff of no value you dont use? Things that are just picking up dust and if someone tries to throw it away you get mad and say hey I need that.

Maybe its your whole house thats filled with clutter. Always remember giving sets us free, while hoarding entraps us. Compulsive hoarding is indeed idolatry. If you are dealing with this problem.

Repent, and clean up. There are some things you know you dont need, but for some reason you just dont want to get rid of it. Have a yard sale or give to the poor.

Give to others who can actually use the things you hoard. Let nothing be before you and God. Do not love money or possessions and serve God with all your heart.

Beware of materialism.

1. Matthew 6:19-21 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Enjoy What You Do Not Own

Finally and perhaps the whole reason why I wrote this article in the first place God calls us to enjoy what we can never possess.

I cannot own many of the greatest gifts God has given me. I do not own my wife I do not own my kids I dont own my time, or the oceans, or the rain, or the sunshine, or the majestic mountain ranges certainly not in any sense in which I own my minivan .

The man who loves the ocean so much that he sells all that he has and buys a beachfront property with his own private sand and closes it off from others so that he can exclusively use it is the man whose joy will die by exclusivity. He cannot enjoy possessions because the possessions possess him.

On the other hand, the man who buys beachfront property in order to freely share that property with his friends and family will find his joy doubled. By his seaside generosity, this man will bless many others in great ways.

But perhaps the most blessed of all is the man who doesnt need to own beachfront property at all. He has learned to enjoy every beach in the world for its sheer beauty. He is freed from the desire to enjoy only what he possesses. This seems to be the way Romans 1 pushes us to contemplate. To be truly human is to express a Godward gratitude in the delights of creation.

And if that is true, then we discover that what it means to delight in this world is a category that explodes all the categories of what the world promises us in possession.
