Who Am I To God Why You Need To Know + How To Answer

Who am I to God? is one of the most important questions youll ever face. Because the answer will change your identity and your life forever.

Whats your answer when someone asks, Who are you?

First-class career woman. Committed partner. Devoted daughter. Most likely whatever title or role that brings you across to them in the best light.

But what if you lose your job tomorrow? Or your relationship breaks up. Or your parent dies. Who are you then? On what shaky foundation have you built your identity?

Or perhaps youve completely lost track of who you are. Its no wonder, with the heavily influential voices that want to change you into who they want you to be.

Thats exactly how I lost track of myself, by trying to change for others. Then after years of going my own way, I finally allowed God to stop me in my tracks. And I had to ask myself, Who am I?

I was shocked, scared, and lost when I couldnt answer. Because all the things upon which Id built my identity had come crashing down around me.

But now, I answer with confidence because Ive changed the question from, Who am I? to, Who am I to God?

Because you see, my darling, thats where your identity lives, where everything else stems from.

So if youve built your identity on an unstable, untrustworthy foundation, its time to tear down all of that and rebuild. To find out who you are to God how much God loves you then your core identity will be unshakeable through any storm.

Where Else Is The Name I Am In The Bible

The Tetragrammaton appears over six-thousand times in the Bible, even in modern English translations. The Hebrew scribes were very careful to neither say aloud, nor fully spell out the holy and sacred name of God, Yahweh. Instead they would put it in all capital letters, and say Adonai. They put the vowels of Adonai into the consonants of Yaweh to get YAHOWAH, which English Christians translated into Jehovah. Today, any time a translator wants to acknowledge where YHWH is in the original Hebrew text, they use the word LORD in all capital letters.

    Some examples include:

Isaiah 8:1 Then the LORD said to me, Take a large tablet and write on it in common characters

Psalm 149:1 Praise the LORD! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly!

Proverbs 21:3 To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

Perhaps the most significant use of the name I AM in the Bible comes from Jesus Christ. The religious leaders would often try to catch Jesus in heresy, in a lie, or blaspheming so they could be rid of him. In John 8, the Jewish people challenged his authority, and they brought up Abraham. Jesus tells them how glad Abraham is to see the day of the Lord. When asked by the crowd how He speaks as if He knows Abraham, Jesus said to them, Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was, I am .

    No Reality Exists Behind God

The second implication in the name I AM WHO I AM is that Gods personality and power are owing solely to himself and to no other.

Push back with me before there was any earth or any solar system or galaxies or universe at all. Push back in your imagination to when there was only God. Then, if you can, push back behind God. Where did he come from? How did he get to be the way he is? If you asked me how I got to be the way I am, I would answer that my father and mother gave me a set of genes and they reared me a certain way and I have been surrounded by thousands of influences in my environment thats how I got to be the way I am.

But when we ask God how he got to be who he is, he answers, I AM WHO I AM. In other words, nobody gave me a set of genes. Nobody and no power brought me into existence or shaped my personality. I had no beginning. There is no reality outside myself that did not come from me. And so there is no force or influence upon my character and power except what comes from me and is controlled by me. I am utterly absolute. Behind me, there is no reality.

Only the Creator can tell you who you truly are.

    Genesis 1:26-31

Then God said, Let us makeman in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. 27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him male and female he created them. 28And God blessed them. And God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. 29And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have givenevery green plant for food. And it was so. 31And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

What Was Happening When Jesus Asked This

In all three of the accounts, Jesus exchange with His disciples is recorded shortly after the feeding of the four thousand . At this point, Jesus has traveled all over teaching. He has healed many, forgiven sins, walked on water, driven out demons, and even raised the dead.

The disciples had seen all of these miracles and had been following Jesus for some time. They had even been sent out in His name, preaching repentance, healing, and casting out demons. After all of this, Jesus turned to His disciples and asked, Who do you say I am?

The disciples were beginning to understand more of who Jesus was. The title Messiah was often misunderstood at the time most expected the foretold Messiah to be a military leader who would deliver Israel from Roman rule. This may be part of why Jesus told the disciples after Peters confession not to tell anyone He was the Messiah people would misunderstand. However, Jesus came to do much more than free us from earthly rule.
