I am very qualified to speak on pride because I am so proud. I hate my pride, but what I take even more seriously is how God hates it so much more.

Pride is our greatest enemy because it makes God our enemy an almighty opponent. God opposes the proud . Why? What makes pride so singularly repulsive to God is the way that pride contends for supremacy with God himself. Pride is not one sin among many, but a sin in a class by itself. Other sins lead the sinner further from God, but pride is particularly heinous in that it attempts to elevate the sinner above God.

Pride is not just a sin, but a sinful mother a sinful orientation that gives birth to more sins. For example, pride can lead to lying. You tell a lie because you are too proud to admit you were wrong or you did something wrong. But the problem is so much bigger. Pride doesnt just tell lies it is a lie.

Why? Pride is self-obsession pride is preoccupation with ourselves. Therefore, it is a lie about reality. It says I am worth thinking about all the time. It is an orientation that wrongly assumes that everything revolves around us.

Think Of Yourself Less

Maybe some of this will make more sense if we talk about what real humility is. As C.S. Lewis said, true humility is not thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less. We can spend a lot of time thinking less of ourselves but we only end up thinking a lot about ourselves. The problem of pride does not boil down to whether we think high thoughts or low thoughts about ourselves but that we think lots of thoughts about ourselves.

Humility is fundamentally a form of self-forgetfulness as opposed to prides self-fixation. Humility can set you free because when you think about yourself less you are free to think about Christ more. Humility puts us on the path of grace pride puts us on the path of opposition. God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble .

The Secretly Prideful Person

A friend told me the other day that Im a very prideful man, and I said to myself, “Dude’s just jealous”. So I told my wife what he said and she said, “Ah, come on. You’re a humble man. Seriously. You’re not cocky and flashy and arrogant and all that.” But later that same week, I was reading a book that said the most prideful people arent usually the bragging arrogant types. Theyre the nice friendly helpful ones at work.

God had been resisting me. It was like his palm was firmly planted in my forehead as I walked through life and it was really uncomfortable. And it was constant. He doesn’t bodyslam the proud, he just resists them, but he gives grace to the humble. Could it be that God is resisting you in your relationships or business or church or whatever area of your life? Only by pride comes contention.

There are about 24 different categories one could be prideful in. Most people are pretty humble in most categories and just prideful in one or two. Youll see your relatives, spouse, boss, employees, friends and president all over this list. But don’t forget this. Pride is one of the most destructive and heinous sins you can commit.

My dad used to say, The reason we shouldnt sin isnt because the Bible says not to or because its wrong or because we could get caught or because it could mess up our future or because well miss out on blessings. No! We should try not to sin because it hurts our relationship with God.

How They Define Pride

Our SELF or Ego is basically who we are as a person. Its not good or bad, its just what makes us, us. Unhealthy pride happens when we do or say things for the purpose of people praising our SELF or for making our SELF feel good or putting our SELF ahead of someone else’s SELF. Pride wants our SELF to be praised, get glory, be worshiped and be highly talked about, even when were not in the room. Unhealthy pride can give us an elevated view of our own SELF that is not accurate, but we truly start to believe it and act to reinforce what we’ve come to believe as true. And when someone questions or challenges the view of our SELF as not accurate, the fireworks begin.

Adam and Eves struggle with pride led to the fall of humanity when they entertained the devils deceitful promise that the apple would give them the same ability to discern good from evil as God.

King David struggled with pride when he called for an unnecessary census of Israels army. He seemed inclined to trust in a strong army rather than in an all-powerful God.

King Uzziah presumed himself worthy of priestly duties, and was cursed with leprosy. King Hezekiahs pride prompted disobedience , Nebuchadnezzar was driven from his kingdom for taking credit for building Babylon , and Herod was struck dead and eaten by worms because he assumed the status of a god rather than praising the One True God.

Set Your Mind On Things Above

If you mind is constantly focused on people-pleasing, what others think, or how you can be more perfect to make yourself look better, you life will be miserable indeed.

In contrast, true joy is found in glorifying God and pointing to Him in all you do. Start by keeping the example of Christ in your mind often, meditating on the Scriptures and thinking about the cross. There is no greater display of humility than Jesus himself.

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. .

Constant I And Me Statements

One of the biggest ways to let the ego take place in front of God is the use of I and Me statements. The ego has a need to feel special and is reluctant to give others praise and credit, including God. We begin to place all credit on our personal accomplishments, over Gods direction. Your ego, your flesh, your false self needs to feel separate and special. It needs the spotlight and isnt afraid to manipulate people, even God to attract attention. The ego says, Look what Ive done. See what Ive accomplished. The ego can and often will stand in place of Gods voice. We are much better off when we begin our thoughts by speaking to the Lord and using the word you in the beginning of the thought.

Pride Takes Away From Gods Glory

What Does The Bible Say About Pride?

God gives us attention. One glance of your eyes and His heart beats faster for you! Look at how much He loves you. Look at the great price that was paid for you! We are not to be conformed to the image of the world. The more we are conformed to the image of our Creator we realize how much we are showered by Gods love. I dont have to go out and seek attention from others because my God gives me attention! He loves me! Realize that your value comes from God and not the eyes of the world.

Pride does the opposite of what we were created for. We were created for the Lord. Everything that we have belongs to Him. Our heart is to beat for Him. Every breath is to be for Him. All of our resources and talents are to be for Him. Pride takes away from Gods glory. Picture someone on a stage and the spotlight is on them. Now picture yourself walking on stage and pushing that person so that the spotlight will be focused on you.

Youre the main focus of the audience now not the other person. You might say, I would never do something like that. However, that is what being prideful does to God. You might not say it, you might not know, but thats what it does. It pushes Him aside and pride competes for His glory. Pride seeks to be acknowledged and worshiped, but 1 Corinthians 10 tells us to do all to the glory of God.

Bible Verses About Pride And Anger

Pride that is allowed to fester will spread like wildfire throughout our bodies. We quickly go from vain thoughts to vain words and actions. Over time, this results in strife, anger, and even violence. The irony of pride is that it masks itself as a superior emotion, yet it causes us to act without honour.

For all that is in the world the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Ways Christians Can Recognize Pride In Their Lives

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus .

We know the disease,Jaquelle Crowe writes, but we dont recognize the symptoms. And thats why we need the insight of our Great Physician and to reveal its symptoms and release us from its grip. She warns of the following signs: fear, entitlement, ingratitude, people-pleasing, prayerlessness, hypocrisy and rebellion. Faith, a gift from God, kills pride. Faith, by nature, looks away from ourselves. We can recognize pride by staying connected to Christ. Through prayer and study of Gods word, the Holy Spirit will alert and convict us to the chains of sin in our lives, and walk us through the steps of sanctification to breaks us free. But we have to have ears to hear, and the gumption to follow His lead.

Because as Gods child, you are already approved. GOD HIMSELF is proud of you. What else matters?

Healing Pride By Praying For Humility: A Devotion

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up .

Humility is the antidote to pride. James admonishes, Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says . We walk a humble path when we follow Christ. His life is our example. He was confident in Gods purpose for His life. The Word made flesh, Jesus chose humility.

How can we take our prideful thoughts captive and steer them into humble obedience? Paul gives us a major tool in Philippians 4:8: Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things. Faith takes focus. Keeping our hearts locked in focus on Christ is paramount to winning the war on pride.

In many ways, pride is the antithesis of humility. Pride leads to self-exaltation and makes us exercise poor judgment, which ultimately leads to destruction. It removes God from the throne of our hearts and makes us blind to arrogance dictating our actions. In many cases, it leads us to become self-reliant, believing that we have done things we can boast about. Jesus was the perfect model of humility and left for us a clear blueprint to follow.

Be Careful When God Blesses You

Pride causes you to be ungrateful and it causes you to forget God and all that He has done for you. I was reading Genesis 32 and was so convicted by the words of Isaac in verse 10, I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant. We are so unworthy. We dont deserve a thing. We are entitled to absolutely nothing, but often blessings change our heart. We become proud and we want more.

Some pastors wear $500 suits, but before they used to wear $50 suits. Some ministers used to associate with the poor and the weak, but now since they are more known they only want to be seen with people that are in high positions. You forget where you came from just like the Israelites forgot where they came from. When God delivers you from a huge trial as time goes on you can start to think that you delivered yourself. You become prideful and start going astray.

God blessed David with riches of all kinds and feeling entitled to everything his pride led him to adultery. Be thankful for every little thing even if its not much. When God blesses you and takes you out of trials seek Him like never before. That is when His people forget Him. That is when His people become proud, covetous, boastful, worldly, etc.
