What Does The Bible Say About Second Marriages

The Biblical Grounds For Divorce:

Divorce and remarriage, what does the Bible really say

Based on the passages above, we can say with confidence that a believer may initiate divorce in the following cases:

1. Her husband has committed adultery with another mans wife.2. Her husband has had homosexual sex with a man.3. Her husband has had sex with an animal.4. Her husband has had sex with a relative.5. Her husband no longer wishes to be married to her because of her Christian faith.

In any of the five above cases the believer may pursue a divorce.

You Must Keep Your Focus On The Chance

You gave your future the chance it deserves, dont self-sabotage. Yes, things will come up and they will trigger really hard emotions and insecurities. The first time I experienced a trigger from the past in my new relationship, I thought for sure, my now husband was going to bail. But guess what? He didnt. He understood, of course, I feel the way I do after everything I went through. And the next time it happened, it phased me less. Yet he was still understanding and reassuring. Our love was stronger than another mans mistakes.

I Remarried After Divorce Should I Divorce Or Separate From My New Spouse Should I Go Back To My First Spouse

To the married I give this commandnot I but the Lordthat the wife should not separate from her husband , and that the husband should not divorce his wife.

However, Paul was writing about the case where a couple has separated but have not divorced and remarried. The additional sin of another divorce and the emotional pain caused to the current spouse and others involved would violate other Bible principles. In most cases, the first marriage could not be restored. When these factors are considered, intentionally breaking up a second marriage seems like an unworkable and unwise choice.

It Is Supposed To Preach The Gospel

There is something special about human beings particularly human beings as male and female together. The Bibles says:

Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him male and female he created them.

Image and likeness those are very important words.

We sometimes forget that the first people to hear these words in Genesis were most likely the wilderness generation of Hebrews during the time of the 40 year desert wandering. Their cultural frame of reference was Egyptian they had been living inside Egyptian culture for the last 400 years. In Egypt only one person was ever referred to as the image and likeness of God. Pharaoh was tselem and demooth Pharaoh was image and likeness of God. He resembled God and represented God in a way that no one else did.

But here in Genesis 1:26-27 Moses tells the recently liberated Egyptian slave class that they are all each of them male and female the image and likeness of God. They represent him and they resemble in some way that is not true of any other creature.

When people look at you particularly when they look at you as male and female together they are supposed to see something about the beauty, wholeness and vitality of the Living God.

What Does The Bible Say About Divorce And Remarriage

The Bible is explicit about divorce and remarriage. In the Old Testament, Moses permitted a man to obtain a divorce on just about any grounds.

“If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the Lord. Do not bring sin upon the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance” .

Later on, in the New Testament, when Jesus was asked about divorce, He replied that Moses gave permission to divorce because of the hardness of their hearts. He said that in the beginning it was not this way. Jesus continued:

“Haven’t you read that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh?” So they are no longer two but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate” .

Obviously, when a person who does not have biblical grounds for divorce remarries, he or she is technically committing adultery.

BEFORE YOU GET MARRIED… WATCH THIS! || What the Bible says About Marriage!

To the rest I say I and not the Lord that if any believer has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. And if any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband is made holy through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy through her husband. Otherwise, your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.

Similarity In Beliefs Goals And Objectives

Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness? . Marriage is a blending of two lives into one flesh. This doesnt mean that husbands and wives must think and feel exactly alike in everything. Marriage doesnt extinguish individuality.

But if there is a broad divide in religious beliefs or other important issues, it will be much more difficult to achieve the oneness that God envisions for an ideal marriage. Forging a strong marriage is not easy at best, and becomes even more challenging when couples must try to bridge major differences.

Key Passages About Marriage

  • Genesis 1:2628 teaches that the blessing of children is given by God in order that the children may learn to be good stewards of Gods world. It sets marriage in the wide context of humankinds privilege of care for Gods world.

  • Genesis 2:1525 is the Bibles foundational teaching about marriage. It shows that marriage is given that a wife may serve alongside her husband as his helper in the great work of caring for Gods world, and that, in marriage, husband and wife form a new family unit.

  • Ephesians 5:2232 gives us a glimpse of the wonderful truth that the marriage of a man and a woman in this age is a sign pointing to the eternal marriage of Jesus Christ with his church. The way in which a husband loves his wife, and the dignified and honorable Christian submission of his wife, together point to the relationship between Jesus and his church.

  • Hebrews 13:4 teach that marriage ought to be honored as the only context for sexual intimacy and that God cares deeply about this safe place being guarded and kept safe, for our own good.

  • Revelation 19:68 looks forward to what can be a wonderful wedding day for any human being who belongs to Jesus and becomes a member of his church, his bride. On that day those who have struggled with sadness in this life, whether through divorce, bereavement, same-sex desires, or simply never being married, will enjoy pleasures that dwarf the deepest delights of marriage in this age.

Close Bond In Marriage

The Lord God said, It is not good that man should be alone I will make a helper comparable to him . After each of the six days of Creation week, God reviewed what He had made and saw that it was good. But there was one thing in Eden that very first week that was not good! All the animals God had created, came in pairsa male and a female. But there was no female for Adam! That is when God created Eve and performed the very first marriage .

God made men and women to complement each otherphysically, mentally, and socially. He built into our being a desire for the companionship of a husband or wife. Thats why the Bible says, He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord .

What Does The Bible Say About Marriage

We struggled with how to make this easy.

We also wanted to learn what marriage researchers determined to be best practices. We loved Dr. John Gottmans books. Rather than starting with a theory, he decided to see how couples deal with conflict in real life. He had couples come and stay in his marriage lab where he would watch them. He studied hundreds of couples. He was able to find patterns of behaviors that separated the masters from the disasters of relationships.

He and his colleagues got so that they could predict whether a couple would divorce with over 90% accuracy. We loved his best practice concepts.

As a Christian, we found his concepts to be totally aligned with a Bible based marriage. The concepts are supported by scripture. We started to incorporate them into our marriage education classes.

Dear Barbara: Do Second Marriages Matter

Dear Barbara: Do second marriages matter? You talk so much about staying together and making marriage work. What if my first marriage didnt and now Im trying again? Can I honor God with a new marriage?

I appreciate the honest question. When we added an official ministry to stepfamilies several years ago at FamilyLife, we received a lot of comments on both sides of this question. Many asked how we can be for blended families, second marriages, and subsequent families if we are against divorce. Especially since God is so adamantly against divorce.

Its a fair concern if we look only at what God is against. So instead of starting with what God hates, lets go to the beginning and look at what He is for. God designed marriage. It was His grand idea. Therefore, He is for marriage. The reason He is so against divorce is because He loves marriage and what it represents so much!

So Ill let you help me answer your question, Do second marriages matter? by asking another question. Does marriage matter?

YES! Resoundingly yes. And since marriage matters, every marriage matters: first marriages, remarriages, second marriages, subsequent marriages.

Every marriage matters to God. So if youre in a wedded covenant relationship with your spouse and God, then your marriage matters. Your current covenant is held in absolute equal honor, value, and esteem as any marriage covenant.

What Did Jesus Not Say About Marriage

What does the Bible say about Marriage? | Part 3 | Building Homes with Christ | Shubhsandesh TV

In light of many hot topics that people ask regarding marriage, there are also many things that Jesus did not say about marriage.

Jesus did not say that marriage was the endgoal for all people. Marriage is not for everyone, and not being married doesn’t make you any less of a Christian. You can still be holy and growing in faith without a spouse. It is for this reason that marriage does not complete you. You are complete and whole as an individual in Christ. When we skew marriage to fulfill longings in us that only God can fill, we will always end up empty.

Second, while God gave us distinctive roles based on Christ and the Church, husbands and wives should understand that marriage is built on mutual honor and respect. There may be roles specific genders are more inclined to accomplish or drawn to than others, but as Piper explains, “no subjection to another human is absolute.”

“…The husband does not replace Christ as the woman’s supreme authority. As humble servants, husbands love their wives, and wives submit, but submission is not a free pass for crude orders or ‘because I said so’ responses… The husband who plops himself in front of the TV and orders his wife around like a slave has abandoned Christ for Archie Bunker. Christ bound Himself with a towel and washed the disciples’ feet. If a man wants to be a Christian husband he must copy Jesus, not Jabba the Hut.”

What Does The Bible Say About Getting Married A Second Time

Here it is clear that the Casarse again after divorcing is a sin against marriage. Is what the Biblia clearly called adultery. MATTHEW 19: 9 And I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, save cause of fornication, and marries with another, adulteress and the one who gets married with the repudiated, adulterate.

Gods Blessing Through My Second Marriage

Why second marriages have such a stigma I am not sure. All I see is what God protected me from. God spared my heart from a marriage to a man who didnt respect me or our covenant. What I can share with all of you is the hope of a wonderful square one. My second marriage is a true dream come true. An unceasing love of me for him and him for me. Our marriage and family have never looked sweeter. I joke that God often tells me, I am real sorry for all you had to go through, but hey! look at what you have now! If youve experienced the devastation of divorce, please know that life will go on. It will go on restored and rebuilt in a beautiful way, a way you never dreamt or imagined. Promise me this, though, give your future the chance it deserves. Cope with the triggers as they come, but dont give them too much handle. Embrace the bliss of starting your life over. Let it be all the beauty you deserved the first time and then some.
