What Does The Bible Say About Social Justice

Speak Up As The Spirit Leads You To Do So

What does the Bible say about social justice?

Peace does NOT mean silence or inaction. To know God is to plead the cause of the afflicted. You can influence peace among neighbors and enemies without ever raising your voice, resorting to violence, tearing down the other side.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace. -James 3:17-18

Peace is speaking with a gentle kind of wisdom that comes from a heart filled with the fear of God and lead by the Spirit. It is a kind of wisdom rarely seen in any of todays discussions, even amongst Christians. Its wisdom that is pure untainted by the world or by sin. Holy in heart, life and conversation. It is full of mercy and good fruits. Its filled with compassion for those in distress, because it sees a neighbor in need, hurting, oppressed, and Love shows up there. Its not just words or social media posts, its a life of good works and service to God and others.

Wisdom from above is without partiality, esteeming others better than herself. It does not judge men’s characters by their circumstances, to think well or ill of them by external appearances, treating them accordingly. It just sees that Jesus died on a cross for that person too.

Justice Is A Part Of God’s Character

He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He. Deuteronomy 32:4

Educate Yourself On These Issues

Take the time to research and educate yourself on these issues, including what racism is , what white privilege is, how our systems may leave black communities at a disadvantage to white people, etc. Look at the data. Listen to the stories. Read up on the proposed solutions, even if its across political party lines. And then check yourself and your actions. Have there been ways youve intentionally or unintentionally aided in racism – directly or indirectly? In your actions or by your lack of action?

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. -Colossians 2:8

Submission To The Mighty Judge And Governing Authorities

What Does the Bible Say About Social Justice?

Indeed, God is like a mighty judge who will render mercy to the innocent and punish those who take advantage of others.

Ecclesiastes 3:17 God will bring into judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time to judge every deed.

Jeremiah 22:3 Thus says the Lord: Do justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place.

Psalms 82:3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.

To not defend the innocent is a serious offense before God as it is to treat others unfairly. Do we find friends, colleagues, or members in a community oppressed for the wrong reasons? We need to step forward to help them, pray for them, get the right help or direction to free them from such difficult situations.

At times, its required to seek the help of authorities to accomplish so-called justice to wrongdoing. Gods word reminds us:

They are Gods servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.– Romans 13:4-5.

Overcoming Poverty Hatred And Violence

Joseph, son of Jacob, was as far as we know a happy boy, favored by his father. This favor, however, did not impress his brothers. The jealousy led them to tragic actions. First, they decided to kill him and leave him for dead. One of the brothers, Reuben, convinced them not to kill him but leave him in a pit.

While Reuben was away, the other brothers sold Joseph into slavery. After that, other misfortunes kept dropping like dominos. Joseph was sold into Potiphars house. After refusing the advances of Potiphars wife, he was then jailed. And while he was in jail, he was forgotten.

We know the story doesnt end there with a series of miracles, Josephs life was restored. He was remembered by a former fellow prisoner who opened the doors for him to speak to Pharaoh. Joseph was once again favored.

He became a key leader in Pharaohs administration. Then, he married an Egyptian woman and had two healthy sons. Eventually, he was reunited with his brothers and his father. It seems to tie neatly into a happily ever after when all was said and done.

Social Justice Is At The Center Of The Gospel

What Does the Bible Say About Justice?

On the other side of the social justice debate are those who argue that social justice issues are at the center of the Gospel, and that as we look at the life and ministry of Jesus, we see Him engaged in social justice actions at every turn. He feeds the hungry. He defends the oppressed. He stands up for womens rights. He loves the outcast, the despised, the rejected, and the sinner, and calls on the rich and powerful to give their money to the poor and take of the needs of the helpless.

While this second group usually agrees that feeding the poor and defending the powerless will not get them to heaven they argue that getting people to heaven is not the only goal of the Gospel. You will often hear them say, People dont care what you know until they know that you care, and The way to a persons heart is through their stomach.
