What Does The Bible Say About Someone Mistreating You

What Does The Bible Say About Mistreating Your Wife

Think Before You Speak

There are a few scriptures that address the issue of mistreating your wife. The first is from the book of Proverbs, which says, He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church for we are members of his body.

For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mysterybut I am talking about Christ and the church.

The Bible states that men ought to love their spouses as Christ loved the church. Christ died for the church, and men ought to do the same for their spouses. This suggests that husbands are to be compassionate, merciful, and kind to their spouses. They are to care for and safeguard their wives, and they are to be prepared to lay down their lives for them.

Praying For Help With Profanity

16. Psalm 141:1-3 O Lord, I cry out to you, Come quickly. Open your ears to me when I cry out to you. Let my prayer be accepted as sweet-smelling incense in your presence. Let the lifting up of my hands in prayer be accepted as an evening sacrifice. O Lord, set a guard at my mouth. Keep watch over the door of my lips.

It Is Good To Wait And See The Fruits Of Repentance Before Initiating Reconciliation

Sin damages relationships. Repeated sin separates people. Although we are called to unconditional forgiveness, the Bible does not teach unconditional relationship with everyone. Nor does it teach unconditional reconciliation with a person who continues to mistreat us.

Although Joseph forgave his brothers, he did not initiate a reconciliation of the relationships until he saw that they had a heart change.

Biblical repentance is not simply feeling sorry . Repentance requires a change in direction. When we put pressure someone to reconcile a marital relationship with an abusive partner before they have seen some significant change in behavior and attitude we can put them in harms way. We have sometimes valued the sanctity of marriage over the emotional, physical, and spiritual safety of the individuals in it.

The apostle Paul encourages us to distance ourselves from other believers who are sinning and refuse correction.

A person cannot discern whether a heart change has taken place without adequate time. Words dont demonstrate repentance but changed behaviors over time does.

God Says Verbal Abuse Is The Equivalent Of Being Gutted With A Knife

There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

My companion stretched out his hand against his friends he violated his covenant. His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

Many wives are told that emotional abuse isnt really abuse. People who havent experienced emotional abuse will ignorantly claim that real abuse is being beaten, and you have to beaten a lot for it to be serious enough to justify legal protection through a divorce. Even then, they encourage the wife to forgive and suffer.

But emotional abuse? No biggie to them. And its certainly not something to even consider leaving your husband over.

But you need to know that God doesnt see it that way. He knows what emotional abuse does to your body, mind, and spirit, and He sees the seriousness of what youre going through. God does not view this as no big deal.

Unlike those who refuse to believe you or understand what it is like to live in an abusive environment every day, the Bible tells us that Jesus understands perfectly and takes what is happening to you seriously.

Heres just a taste of the kind of emotional abuse Jesus endured on our behalf, and I hope this helps you realize how much compassion Jesus has for you:

How Should We Respond To This Situation According To Scripture

What Does the Bible Say About Giving? 6 Lessons From The Old Testament ...

In Galatians 3:28, Paul shows us one of the ways the true gospel impacts human relationships. It says this in Galatians chapter 3, verses 28 there is no Jew or Greek slave or free male and female since you are all one in Christ Jesus see at the foot of the cross we are all equal. All that matters is that every single one of us is broken sinners before a holy God in desperate need of grace and salvation, and thats exactly what Jesus offers every single one of us.

I want to point out three categories that Paul references in this verse. He mentions Jews and Greeks, slaves and free and males and females, and hes saying that theres no Jew or Greek, theres no slave or free, theres no male and female. Now what Paul is not doing is saying that there are literally no differences between these two groups of people.

Of course, we know that there are real differences between men and women. Even for you who may be watching and me, there are real differences between you and me. I have red hair. Maybe your hair is a dif color. I have blue eyes. Your hair might be a different color. I have white skin. Your skin might be a different color.

In this verse, Paul is referencing three categories in his culture where one group of people were seen as inferior to the other. Jew saw themselves as better than Greeks. Free people were seen to be better than slaves. Men were seen to be better than women.

Slavery In The New Testament

In the Old Testament era, people were enslaved primarily through war. But in the first century AD, the procreation of slaves swelled their numbers enormously. And many people actually sold themselves into slavery to improve their lives.

Owning and using people as slaves was so common in the Roman Empire that not a single Roman writer condemned the practice. But this acceptance of slavery would begin to change with the growth and influence of Christianity. Slavery in the Roman era was dramatically different from the despicable practice in American history. If you walked through any first-century Roman city, you would not be able to tell most slaves from free people. Slaves performed manual labor, but they were also doctors, nurses, household managers, and intellectuals. They managed finances and cities. They were often given an excellent education at the expense of their owners, with the result that philosophers and tutors were typically slaves.

Even more amazing to us, it was common for people to sell themselves into slavery to secure such privileges. A person who wanted to be a Roman citizen could sell himself to a citizen and then purchase his freedom. For many people, slavery was more a process than a condition.

As a result, no New Testament writer attempted to end slavery itself, as this was not possible in their time. But several other facts should be noted as well.

One: Paul abolished all racial and social discrimination for Christians:

Set Healthy Biblical Boundaries With Family

Next, once youve gotten honest about the situation and the role you may have played in it, its time to set some Biblical boundaries with family members and friends who may need them.

What behaviors will you accept? Which behaviors will you not accept? Where is the boundary?

And, again, this is where the book Boundaries comes in really helpful!

When you are dealing with people and situations who are truly toxic, manipulative, crazy or even abusive, it can really make you question your sanity and your decision making! You want to do the right thing, but you may question what the right thing is or what requests are reasonable. It can be hard to tell.

Thats where Boundaries does a great job of laying out a Biblical framework to help you understand what truly is your responsibility, what requests are unreasonable, where you should draw the line, and how you can do so without guilt.

You can find Boundaries at your local library or .

Heres the advice I gave the reader above:

So what do healthy, biblical boundaries with family look like for you?

Do you need to limit visits or restrict your visits to a certain format?

Do you need to set the boundary that you can only visit X times a year, that you can only give X dollars a month, or that you will only continue to be around them only as long as the conversation remains healthy and polite.

Theres no need to feel guilty. The Bible encourages you to set Biblical boundaries with family where necessary.

‘mistreated’ In The Bible

What does the Bible say that heaven looks like

Here I am. Bring charges against me before the Lord and His anointed: Whose ox or donkey have I taken? Whom have I wronged or mistreated? From whose hand have I taken a bribe to overlook something? I will return it to you.

Here is what the Lord says concerning the false prophets: My heart and my mind are deeply disturbed. I tremble all over. I am like a drunk person, like a person who has had too much wine, because of the way the Lord and his holy word are being mistreated.

Is It Wrong For Us To Pray For Revenge

If youve read through the Book of Psalms, youll notice in some chapters, there are pleas for revenge and for the wicked to suffer.

When he is judged, let him be found guilty, and let his prayer become sin. Let his days be few, and let another take his office .

Most of us can relate to having similar thoughts and feelings that are found in the Psalms when we have been wronged. We want to see our perpetrator suffer just as we have. It would almost seem as though the Psalmists are praying for revenge. The Psalms shows us the natural inclination to seek revenge, but they go on to remind us of Gods truth and how to respond.

If you take a closer look, youll notice the Psalmists prayed for Gods vengeance. They were asking God to bring about justice because truly, their circumstances were out of their hands. The same is true for Christians today. Rather than praying specifically for revenge, we can pray and ask God to bring about justice according to His good and perfect will. When a situation is out of our hands, praying about it and asking God to intervene can be our first response to navigating difficult circumstances, so that we dont fall into the temptation of repaying evil with evil.

Restoration Is Gods Work

Pride kept me from seeing these things about myself. It also kept me focused on how the other person needed to change so I could be ok. With amazing grace, God revealed the truth for the purpose of restoring me to wholeness.

He sent His Word and healed me and delivered me from self-destruction.

God offers healing and freedom to everyone.

He is waiting to transform the lives of everyone leaking nuclear emotions and throwing verbal grenades. The controller, the abuser, and the too-easily angered are not immune to the power of Gods Word. We are promised that nothing is impossible with God . There is hope for the bully, the addict, and the one whose mind is stuck in a negative gear. The blamer, the gossiper, the arrogant, and the victim are all offered fresh doses of mercy from God each and every day.

God created those who hurt us. He has a good plan for their lives. He knows the why behind their destructive behaviors. He knows the lies they believe about themselves. He knows what stands in the way of their wholeness. He is a Shepherd who pursues every sheep that wanders away from all He offers.

John : 9 You Are Forgiven

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

~ 1 John 1:9

Those who confess their transgressions are convinced that God will forgive them and lift the sins hold on their fellowship.

Even though this text is addressed to Christians, John claims that those who confess their sins would be forgiven and cleansed.

The reason for this is that those husbands who had been maltreating their spouse in time past, can be forgiven and their sins cleanse.

To one another and to God, we confess our sins, flaws, and wrongdoings. God promises to forgive us if we confess our sins.

And to wash us of all wickedness, by forgiving all that has happened in the past, treating us as if we were righteous, and eventually eliminating all traces of guilt from our souls.

What Does The Bible Say About Dealing With Toxic / Abusive People / Relationships

Pin on (Matthew 5:44, Luke 6:35) Love your enemies.

In an ideal world, we wouldn’t ever have to deal with people who hurt us, but unfortunately, we live in a fallen world full of fallen people , so pain and hurt is going to happen at some point. We would hope that at least our family or Christian friends would always be an encouragement, but there’s no guarantee of that either. No one is exempt from the influence of sin. Yes, Christians will struggle against sin tooand sometimes they allow it to get the best of them. Thus, toxic or abusive relationships are formed, and we occasionally wind up entangled within those terrible, unhealthy webs and cycles of behavior.

Corinthians : 2 One Man One Wife

Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

~ 1 Corinthians 7:2

This portion is Pauls response to a letter from the Corinthian church in a letter.

Some of them apparently believed that a guy should never have an intimate relationship with a woman, even if they were married.

It may appear at first glance that Apostle Paul is putting marriage on a very low and utilitarian level, but we must remember that he is writing with a specific and restricted purpose in mind.

St. Paul provides a justification for people who wrote to him to marry, but the arguments efficacy is limited to the immediate object in view.

When he speaks about matrimony in general, St. Paul expresses his full understanding of the higher features of it.

Christen Quotes About Cursing

The foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing is a vice so mean and low that every person of sense and character detests and despises it. George Washington

The words you speak become the house you live in. Hafiz

The tongue is you in a unique way. It is the tattletale on the heart and discloses the real person. Not only that, but misuse of the tongue is perhaps the easiest way to sin. There are some sins that an individual may not be able to commit simply because he does not have the opportunity. But there are no limits to what one can say, no built-in restraints or boundaries. In Scripture, the tongue is variously described as wicked, blasphemous, foolish, boasting, complaining, cursing, contentious, sensual and vile. And that list is not exhaustive. No wonder God put the tongue in a cage behind the teeth, walled in by the mouth! John MacArthur

Profanity is wrong not simply because it shocks or disgusts, but at a much deeper level, profanity is wrong because it trashes that which God has declared to be holy and good and beautiful. Ray Pritchard
