Help Me With My Thoughts

What does the bible say about Spiritual Warfare?

At Precept, we want you to know God deeply so you can live differently. One of the ways you can live differently is by understanding the power of Gods Word to transform your mind and the way you live. In this article, we help you find answers in scripture to common questions about spiritual warfare, the battle for your mind, and how to win these battles.

Bible Battles Study Bible Warfare Project A Long Time In The Making

Would a Bible Battles study be the task that God wanted for me? The verses would also prove that we are to fight with the spirit and how that ends up being more potent than flesh. We are to trust God and not the world for our victory. Given my background of studying military history, this made a lot of sense. Ive been an avid student of the science and history of warfare for the last 20 years. Never did I think that God would use this. I thought it was just a pass time. It seems now all my preparation has had this purpose in mind.

What Are Battles For Your Mind

The battles for your mind come in the form of spiritual warfare and personal attacks. In 2 Corinthians, Paul shares what a spiritual battle looks like and his response to the attack.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

The Devil And Spiritual Warfare

Ultimately, the devil has already been defeated by what Jesus did when He died on a cross. Jesuss resurrection from the dead demonstrates that He won the victory over death. But the devil wants to blind people to the truth of what Jesus has done.

The devils attempts to send us off course in our relationship with God go right back to the beginning of the human story. He was the author of the first temptation humankind faced.

The temptation of Adam and Eve, which we read about in Genesis 3, provides a clear picture of what you can expect from the devil:

  • He is more crafty than any wild animal.

  • He comes alongside you pretending to be an ally.

  • He deceives you by trying to bend the truth God speaks to you.

  • He tries to plant doubts in your mind about the things God has said.

  • He wants you to think God is restricting you when in reality He is protecting you.

  • He encourages you to rebel against God by telling you that you deserve to be the ultimate authority of Your life.

  • He uses your pride and your sense of shame to turn you against others.

Be mindful that our enemy, the devil, is real. He is single-minded and dangerous, so be wise in how you conduct your warfare with him. If you follow Jesus, God has given you incredible resources by placing the Holy Spirit within you, but you need to resist letting your pride tempt you to try to fight the enemy on your own.

Fighting Spiritual Battles The Jesus Way

What Does the Bible Say about Spiritual Warfare Really ...

Throughout His life on earth, Jesus faced spiritual warfare in many forms. He was tested by the devil during His 40 days in the wilderness . He was provoked, falsely accused and verbally abused by people who did not like what He was saying. And its important to remember that Jesus was a man fully human so He faced all the temptations any other man would face.

But He never lost any of His spiritual battles. Even His wrongful conviction and execution on the cross, which looked like bitter defeat, were ultimately His greatest victory. So what examples does Jesus give us about using prayer in spiritual warfare?

How Satan Came At Me Looking Saint

I was not raised in church. I was born into a family of alcoholics and grew up experiencing violence at home. I was molested and raped. I didnt have a father. My mom was on welfare and hated me. She wished me death and attempted to kill me various times. She got me addicted to porn and sex.

I moved to America in 2008 as a mail-ordered bride.

In 2014 I gave my life to Christ. I struggled in life with addictions to alcohol and sex. I got baptized, became celibate, and did a 600-day no-dating challenge. In the meantime, I read a great book called Move Toward The Mess, which described how Jesus always moved toward those people who were messy and had pain and actually needed the Gospel, hope, and love.

RELATED: Move Toward The Mess

I identified the mess for which God equipped me: sexual sin. I decided to help with this mess and I wrote 124 pages of content about celibacy and honoring God with your body. I created a social media campaign and an online course about Jesus and sex, which attracted 45K viewers in its first few months, and nearly 1K students enrolled in my course globally.

RELATED: About Jesus and Sex

I was serving Jesus with all my seriousness, so I dedicated a lot of time, energy, and effort to producing content, including videos, to draw women closer to Jesus. I knew that there would be consequences if I started promoting Jesus and hope. I knew that it was going to be tough. Yet, I did it anyway because I believed that God equipped me to help with that mess.

What Does The Bible Say About Our Enemy

We are definitely at war, and in war, we have an enemy. Well, we have four enemies that Scripture tells us about.

The Devil

The Devil. Satan. Lucifer. The Accuser. The Dragon. These are all names for our fearsome enemy. But, as we will see later, we do not have to be afraid. God didnt leave us to battle him alone.

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Demons

There has been a surge in people interested in the demonic and evil. Look no further than the latest popular television shows. Our culture glamorizes evil, but God commands us to have nothing to do with contacting the dead or demons.

When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.Then it says, I will return to the house I left. When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.

Why Is It Important To Understand The Enemy

Spiritual Warfare: What the Bible Says About It

Before you fight a war, its always a good thing to know something about your enemy. Nowhere is this statement truer than in the spiritual realm.

Many Christians do not take the enemy seriously because they dont know enough about him to take him seriously.

In fact, Satans cleverest strategy is to make us believe that he does not exist or that hes not a real threat.

Some Christians do not even believe in a literal devil. Instead, they believe he is a biblical symbol for evil. But that is not the position of the Bible. The devil is every bit as real as God is. Its hard for a symbol to do the things attributed to Satan in Scripture: deceiving, murdering, tempting, destroying, lying, accusing, and controlling.

In the famous exchange between God and Satan in Job 1, God asked Satan from where he had come. The devil answered,

From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it. Job 1:7

Satan is active on the earth today, involved in human affairs. In fact, the whole world is under his control . God has given Satan authority on the earth for a while, and God will one day take back that control. In the meantime, anyone living on planet Earth is subject to the devils actions. And we must keep our guard up against him.

Bible Verses To Help You When Satan Attacks

Below are some powerful scriptures to help you overcome spiritual attacks.

This is why 1 Peter 5: 8 tells us, Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

While this may sound scary, the next verse offers you exactly what you need to handle these spiritual attacks.

Verse 9 reads: Resist him, standing firm in your faith In order to stand firm in your faith, you need the Word of God.

This is why you need to meditate on the following 10 Bible verses whenever you are faced with spiritual attacks.

Spiritual Warfare Scriptures In The Book Of Ephesians

Many of us are familiar with Bible verses on spiritual warfare, and can easily quote the passage on the armor of God described in Ephesians 6. But many of us are not aware of the connection to spiritual warfare that the apostle Paul makes to believers in Ephesians chapters 4 and 5 before he urges the Ephesian church to gear up for spiritual war in chapter 6.

He instructed the church as the body of Christ to live in unity among one another in chapter 4.

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Ephesians 4:3

Since Satans goal is to attack families, it makes perfect sense why Paul strengthened the home front by addressing the biblical roles of the family before he instructed them to put on the armor of God.

The beautiful unity between humanity was broken after sin entered the world.

After the curse of sin saturated the earth, Adam and Eve no longer lived in complete oneness and harmony. There was disunity and discord within the family. One of the first areas of life affected by sin was marriage . Then Satan attacked the children within those families through generational curses and rebellion.

Ever since then, the devil has been busy.

Heres how we do it.

Gods Mission Has An Enemy: 10 Facts About Spiritual Warfare

The Bible speaks about the reality of a conflict we face as believers, and we popularly call that conflict spiritual warfare. Missionaries are often most aware of this reality as they engage those who dont know Christ around the world. C. S. Lewis warned us decades ago, though, that believers usually fall into one of two camps when dealing with the demonic: we deny their existence, or we get fascinated with them. Either way, we too often miss the Bibles basic teachings about this conflict.

The Bible is a book about God, not the devil.

The Bible doesnt answer every question about warfare, nor does it grant us permission to focus our attention on the devil. Any approach to warfare that magnifies the devils power does not reflect biblical spiritual warfare.

Satan and his forces are real.

Some argue the concept of Satan and demons is only a first-century attempt to explain evil, but the Bible reveals them as real, supernatural beings who oppose God and his people. Our attempts to explain away these forces do not negate their reality.

Satan, however, is not our biggest problem.

We face three enemies: the world, our flesh, and the devil . In some cases, the three are so interwoven that its difficult to tell them apart. Our primary problem is not Satan, though. We are our biggest issue.

God reigns, even over the enemy.

The enemy we face is a defeated foe.

Warfare is the devils attempt to deceive and divide believers.

But we are not on the defensive in this battle.

Jesus Has Authority Over All Of The Spirit World

In Mark 5:613, when Jesus converses with the demons inside the man, the original language alternates between singular and plural hinting that one demon spoke for the legion. All of them, however, were fearful of Jesus authority.

Ephesians 6 as well as Daniel 10 allude to organizational structures in the spiritual domain: principalities, powers, evil, rulers, princes, and the like. Wherever you find structures enforcing abuse whether the Nazis Final Solution, Stalins orchestrated famine in Ukraine, the chattel slave trade in America and England, or China and Myanmar persecuting minorities you can be assured principalities and powers are at work.

However strong the ruler or authority, they are already defeated as Colossians 2:15 says: He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly he triumphed over them in him.

What Does The Bible Say About Our Allies

In every battle, there is an enemy, but God did not leave us to fight alone. Scripture teaches that we have three allies:

    The Holy Spirit

Our greatest ally of all is the Spirit of the Lord that lives in every believer. That Spirit motivates and moves us to live in obedience to Christ, it calls out to the Father when our prayers fall short, and it guarantees our entry into eternal life.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

    The Body of Believers

Ive always loved the picture of friendship in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. All three members of the fellowship help to carry the burden of the ring. Its an excellent visual for what the body of believers is like. We carry each others burdens, we call each other higher in Christ, and we love each other like Christ. It truly is amazing how powerful the body is when we are unified in the Spirit.

For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
