What Does The Bible Say About Waiting Until Marriage

We Guard Whats Precious

Waiting Until Marriage | Our Experience & What the Bible REALLY Says About Saving Yourself

But here, finally, is the answer to your question.

We save sex for marriage precisely because it is natural, and normal, and beautiful so that we can keep it that way. So that it does not become common, and sordid, and manipulative, and diseased, and cheap, but precious, and personal, and clean, and sacred. You dont put fences around weeds. You put fences around gardens. We dont put our dirty socks under lock and key in the hotel room. We put our rings and our wallet in the safe. Holding sex until marriage doesnt make it unnatural. It makes it priceless.

Holding sex until marriage doesnt make it unnatural. It makes it priceless.

Another reason we save sex till marriage is that marriage is a picture of the covenant between Christ and his Church. And sex in that picture is the most exquisite pointer in the covenant relationship to the indescribable pleasures that await our full fellowship with Christ, in the age to come, in covenant with Jesus. Sex outside marriage is a lie about Jesus and about his relationship to the Church. It is a lie about where ultimate joy is to be found.

And, finally, Paul commands, 1 Corinthians 6:18: Flee from sexual immorality . Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

Is Waiting Until Marriage Worth It Our Conclusion:

My conclusion in short is…YES! Sex is definitely worth saving for marriage.

When it all comes down to the reasons to wait until marriage, fundamentally, for me, it is this:

If only we arrange our life according to that principle which counsels us, that we must always hold to the difficult then that which now still seems to us the most alien will become what we most trust and find most faithful.

There is so much beauty in the difficulty of waiting and living out celibacy during our single and dating years. We only get to see it when we commit to the process and embrace the wait.

While I know how difficult it can be to wait for your wedding day, I also know just how worth it is, too.

Dr Lawson Stone Responds:

The students claim that in the Old Testament it appears that, rather than sex being confined to marriage, it leads to marriage involves a number of errors, misinterpretations, and blind spots resulting from not hearing the OT in its own setting and voice. The fact in the OT is that a marriage was seen as naturally being real when sexual intercourse took place because sexual intercourse is the actual physical and emotional uniting of the man and woman. This is the origin of the tradition in the Roman Catholic church that a wedding not followed by sexual intercourse, i.e. not consummated, is incomplete and may be annulled. But this proposition is not reversible, that one can have sex and consider oneself married! The union created by sexual intercourse is real, and happens regardless of ones legal state or even feelings of intimacy. This is why St. Paul warns that sex even with a prostitute still fuses the john to the prostitute as one flesh, and for a believer, implicates the Holy Spirit in an unholy union. The Bible sees sexual union as the vital core of marriage, but this in no way implies that no concern existed for making sure such a union was lawful, sanctioned and blessed by God.

Sex Before Marriage Is Not A Sin

No sex before marriage-When asked what the Bible has to say about sex, most people will have this response. However, when asked to provide exactly where this rule is listed in the Bible, the answer from many Christians is much less confident. My belief that premarital sex is sinful has been shattered.

So what is the truth about having sex outside of marriage?

The truth is that we are having the wrong conversation over and over again. In an attempt to justify what is believed to be common knowledge, we are pulling at any verse that has an inkling of resemblance to premarital sex. We are using these verses, devoid of their context and circumstance, in order to justify a belief that does not have much merit.

Many source the Ten Commandments as a call to wait until we are married to have sex. In particular, the seventh of these commandments.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

The problem here is that adultery and premarital sex are being equated, when in reality, they are two distinctly different things.

Adultery really is about violation of relationship or violation of contract. Its about not keeping your promise, Dr. Colleen Windham-Hughes, a professor of religion at California Lutheran University, said.

This verse can be interpreted to mean that God is in control of our bodies. While it is undeniable that glorifying God through celibacy or through your body is a way to honor God, this verse is also getting at the submissive role of women at this time in the world.

Be Part Of A Church That Will Help You Fight Fornication

Wait Until MarriageLesson 3 in Understanding True Love series

Especially in a sexually permissive culture, you need a church that engages sex biblically. While sex is good , sexual sin makes us lawbreakers in need of redemption the church cannot waffle on this. But faithful churches will also provide hope for all sinners. Pauls Corinthian audience was exhausted by sexual sin and weighted down by guilt. He preached Christ as the only one who could cure restless desires . We should not expect to see fornicators, adulterers, and homosexuals converted to Christ if we do not meet them with the grace of the gospel.

More concretely, believers must open their homes to single people, providing a haven of companionship and a respite from long hours alone in which temptation can gain strength. We should prepare to respond with prayerful and sympathetic love to those courageous enough to confess sexual sin. In this way we help bear their burden . Caring friends will also offer to singles the platonic physical affection practiced by Jesus and his disciples . One single friend put it this way: If appropriate intimacy doesnt come from somewhere else like God or friends, it is pretty much a given that singles will be either emotionally suffering or falling into sin. We can learn from many non-western cultures the sacramental art of appropriate physical contact.

What Percentage Of People Wait Until Marriage

As we quoted above, only 10% of the population waits until marriage to have a sexual relationship. However, this percentage is based on the general population and not solely practicing Catholics and Christians. You may feel that you are the only person saving yourself for your wedding day, but this isn’t true!

So Is Sex Before Marriage Really Wrong

The early chapters of the Bible were based on rules and commandments of the Jewish traditions. Sex before marriage was clearly condemned in Judaism, and the same goes for Christianity. This was the culture Jesus was raised in. These commandments and rules gave the blueprint for marriage. The words sex outside of marriage are never mentioned, however, it is implied that it is against Gods design.

In fact, Adam wasnt joined to Eve until God gave her away in the first marriage union of time. The same tradition goes for Noah, Shem, Abram, and Jacob. Everyone waits until they are united in marriage to have sexual relations. Thats because the other aspect of sex is to procreate.

Thats right, God meant for us to fully enjoy sex, . Perhaps the best book of the Bible about the joys of sex is the Song of Songs as it reminds us sex is strictly for marriage. However, there is one example of the condemnation of sex before marriage of a soon-to-be wife who had sex outside of marriage in Deuteronomy 22:13-19.

It was such a precious manner that the husband had the right to divorce her if she was found not to be a virgin. Also, because of how this law couldve been misconstrued, laws were put in place to protect the woman as well. She had the right to prove her virginity had been taken in the marriage bed.

Waiting For Sex Until Marriage Doesn’t Always Guarantee That Your Partner Had Pure Intentions

If any man takes a wife and goes in to her and then hates her and accuses her of misconduct and brings a bad name upon her, saying, I took this woman, and when I came near her, I did not find in her evidence of virginity, then the father of the young woman and her mother shall take and bring out the evidence of her virginity to the elders of the city in the gate.

And the father of the young woman shall say to the elders, I gave my daughter to this man to marry, and he hates her and behold, he has accused her of misconduct, saying, I did not find in your daughter evidence of virginity. And yet this is the evidence of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall spread the cloak before the elders of the city.

Additional Scriptures About Sex And Marriage

“Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.” ~ 1 Corinthians 7:1-4

“To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.” ~ 1 Corinthians 7:8-9

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8

Is Sex Before Marriage A Sin If You Love The Person

While sex isnt everything it is something. There is a bit of mystery around the act that makes it hard to pinpoint what about it is so significant. God did create sex to symbolize the union of a man and a woman . We see later in the New Testament that sex is reserved for between a man and a woman. Sex was designed to bring two people together and seal a bond that should last for life.

The Bible clearly tells us that God did set sex aside as a significant act of love and commitment meant only for married life. As Christ followers we are prompted to commit to waiting it out until the big day.

We have to trust God, knowing that He created sex with your life changing union in mind. Since we know it means something to Him, as people in His family, we should take the attitude that says, If it means something to Him it should mean something to us.

We follow a mysterious God and He asks His people to trust and believe that He has your very best in mind. As believers, we are called to give over our sexual desire to the Lord and follow His plan. Just as God throughout the Bible instructs His people is so many other ways , His instruction around sex is Him seeing the big picture of our lives and trying to push us toward the best this life has to offer.

1 Corinthians 13:5 reminds us that love is not self-seeking. The best way to show love to your partner is to love them, and their spiritual well-being, more than your love your own body and its desires.

Heres An Article Why Waiting Until Marriage Is For The Best

Sure, only 3% of the world waits until marriage to do that thing that creates babies and unites a man and a woman. Yes, we are talking about sex. People wait until marriage to have sex for many reasons, God, responsibility, dignity, stability, and to find the right person.

There are many beneficial aspects of waiting until marriage. Lets look at the stats that back up the claim like a virgin spouse. According to WEBMD couples that waited had a higher quality of intercouse of 15%, 20% of more stability, and 22% higher satisfaction compared to couples who had premartial sex. So better sex, which society says is a must, is in marriages where both partners were celebit.

Somone better dial-up Hollywood, Planned Parenthood, Feminist, Porn Stars, even Prostitutes. And those so called sex-positive peps and tell them that they are wrong. Virgins do it better.

Now lets get biblical. What was the first thing Adam and Eve did when they left the Garden of Eden? They covered their private parts. They established dignity in humans. So if even being in the nude is forbidden, then it is safe to say sex is for a husband and wife when they have achieved the sacrament of marriage.

Does The Bible Prohibit Sex Before Marriage

In my experience, there is a very broad range of answers to this question. It has generally been assumed by moral conservatives that the answer is self-evidently yes by contrast, it has generally been assumed by moral liberals that the answer is no, since there does not appear to be any specific prohibition in Scripture. The massive changes in our culture around sex and sexuality since the 1960s and the advent of contraception have put us at a very big cultural distance from the world of the Bible, and particularly the Old Testament, so there are significant challenges in the task of translation here.

I was recently pointed to this :

In biblical times, a man was not prohibited from having sexual relations with a woman, as long as it led to marriage. The Bible never explicitly states a woman and man may not have sexual intercourse prior to marriage therefore, no sanction was imposed for premarital sex, but it was considered a violation of custom.

The question immediately raise is: what is the status of such custom? I therefore offer here the piece I wrote for Premier Christianity the other week, in response to the less-publicised half of the motion passed at the Methodist Conference, and add a few reflections.

There is a good Grove booklet exploring this question by Gary Jenkins.
