Why did God create marriage at all? Couldnt Adam and Eve have just lived life together without the legalities? Well, to answer that question we need to understand that God had a design for His creation. He didnt just throw some things together and hope it all worked out. No, God meticulously crafted all of creation to point to Him and our need for Him.

How Is A Church Wedding Celebrated
As a rule a wedding must take place publicly. The bride and bridegroom are questioned as to their intention to marry. The priest or the deacon blesses their rings. The bride and bridegroom exchange rings and mutually promise to be true in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health and vow to each other: I will love you and honor you all the days of my life. The celebrant ratifies the wedding and administers the blessing.
Here are some excerpts from one form of the Rite of Catholic Marriage: Celebrant: N. and N., have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourselves to each other in marriage? Bride and bridegroom: Yes. Celebrant: Will you love and honor each other as man and wife for the rest of your lives? Bride and bridegroom: Yes. The celebrant then asks the bride and bridegroom together the following questions. Will you accept children lovingly from God and bring them up according to the law of Christ and his Church? Bride and bridegroom: Yes.

Three Gifts Of Marriage: Companionship Passion And Purpose
When marriage is done well, couples not only experience the wonderful emotional and physical intimacy of being on the same page but also frequently sense a deeper, more profound, spiritual connection. While some couples think of it as being soul-mates, there is an aspect to it that is qualitatively differentone that both grounds a relationship and gives hope for the future. While each couple will experience this differently, there is little doubt that there is a more to marriage than meets the eyethe very design and purpose that points to marriage as being a gift of great, even eternal significance.
Family Authority And Responsibilities
Much of the dispute hinges on how one interprets the New Testament household code, a term coined by , which has as its main focus hierarchical relationships between three pairs of social classes that were controlled by Roman law: husbands/wives, parents/children, and masters/slaves. The apostolic teachings, with variations, that constitute what has been termed the “household code” occurs in four epistles by the Apostle Paul and in 1 Peter.
In the early Roman Republic, long before the time of Christ, the law of manus along with the concept of patria potestas , gave the husband nearly absolute autocratic power over his wife, children, and slaves, including the power of life and death. In practice, the extreme form of this right was seldom exercised, and it was eventually limited by law.
Theologian Frank Stagg:pp.187ff finds the basic tenets of the code in Aristotle‘s discussion of the household in Book 1 of Politics and in Philo‘s Hypothetica 7.14. Serious study of the New Testament Household Code began with Martin Dilbelius in 1913, with a wide range of studies since then. In a Tübingen dissertation, by James E. Crouch concludes that the early Christians found in Hellenistic Judaism a code which they adapted and Christianized.
Two of these Christianized codes are found in Ephesians 5 and in Colossians 3, which instructs wives to subordinate themselves to their husbands.

Love And Respect In Marriage
Husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. . . . Let each one of you . . . so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband . Without mutual love and respect on the part of husbands and wives, a marriage cannot last. Keep up the early attentions. Look for the positive qualities in your spouse, and nurture that respect and love that first drew you together.
Biblical Foundations And History
Christians believe that marriage is considered in its ideal according to the purpose of God. At the heart of God’s design for marriage is companionship and intimacy.
The biblical picture of marriage expands into something much broader, with the husband and wife relationship illustrating the relationship between Christ and the church.
It is also considered in its actual occurrence, sometimes involving failure. Therefore, the Bible speaks on the subject of divorce. The New Testament recognizes a place for singleness. Salvation within Christianity is not dependent on the continuation of a biological lineage.
The Genesis creation account tells the story of when God instituted marriage. This took place after the creation of the first woman, Eve, from Adam, the first man.
Like the adjacent Arabic culture , the act of marriage appears mainly to have consisted of the groom fetching the bride, although among the Israelites the procession was a festive occasion, accompanied by music, dancing, and lights. To celebrate the marriage, week-long feasts were sometimes held.
Since a wife was regarded as property, her husband was originally free to divorce her with little restriction, at any time. A divorced couple could get back together unless the wife had married someone else after her divorce.

Why The Marriage Covenant Is So Important
In a previous blog post, I wrote about what a covenant is and how its different than a contract. This distinction is important because it applies to one of the most important covenants in the Bible, the marriage covenant.
Lets review covenants before we dive in.
- A covenant as depicted in the Bible always requires blood or sacrifice.
- A covenant is a promise that one party makes to the other. The promise is guaranteed regardless of the actions of the other party.
- There are no clauses, no way to terminate. A covenant is forever and not time-bound.
To recap, for a Biblical covenant we need blood and an irrevocable promise.

Whether you agree with my analysis of the so-called Biblical clobber verses in previous blog entries or not, the discussion about LGBTQI issues in the church is really centred on the issue of marriage . The next few entries in this series will be focused on what the Bible says and doesnt say about marriage.
Since I began my work on this issue over a decade ago, most Christians have shifted from being totally opposed to LGBTQI people to now welcoming them into their churches even if only as sinners who need be healed. But they believe and teach that LGBTQI people should be celibate, and they believe that marriage can only be between a natural man and a natural woman. For them, the actual sin of homosexuality is same-sex sexual activity, and since they also believe that sexual activity is confined to marriage, LGBTQI people should neither marry nor have sex.
Most countries that have legalised gay marriage have actually created a new category called civil unions rather than including LGBTQI people in laws about marriage this is largely been done to placate conservative religious groups. Churches are enabled to hide behind this legal distinction, by acknowledging civil unions as legal entities but continuing to deny gay marriages in their churches.
God Uses Marriage For Reproduction
26. Genesis 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and multiply! Fill the earth and subdue it! Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that moves on the ground.
Christians wait until marriage. Marriage is to fulfill our sexual needs. In fact, it is better to marry than to burn with lust.
27. 1 Corinthians 7:1-5 Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman. But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
28. 1 Corinthians 7:9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
When will God give me a spouse?
29. Proverbs 31:10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.

No need to look far into the Word of God to find the purpose of marriage. In fact, its right in the beginning. Genesis tells us the beginning of everything starting with the creation of the universe and culminating with the creation of man. Everything was good except one thing. God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him. Gen 2:18. In one sentence we see Gods purpose for the marriage relationship companionship.

Ideas On Marriage In Heaven Vary With Faiths
Carol, Oklahoma City
A:There is tremendous disagreement among New Testament-based faiths on the question of whether couples will remain married and know each other in heaven. Differences are pronounced even among members of the same church or denomination.
Very few Christian traditions officially answer the question whether believers will know their earthly spouses in heaven. The issue usually is not considered an essential teaching, such as the nature of Christ or the effect of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.
Many Christians rely on Matthew 22:30, in which Jesus tells a group of questioners, “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage they will be like the angels in heaven.
For some literal readers of the Bible, this Scripture provides a negative answer to the question whether people will know their spouses after death. Other literalists, however, point out that ancient tradition provided for arranged marriage. When Jesus speaks of marrying and being given in marriage, he says involuntary marriage will cease. These believers, insisting this Scripture must be read in the context of its time and culture, say modern marriage in which both partners volunteer will continue in heaven following the resurrection.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints employs this Scripture as part of its reason for performing special marriages as part of its temple ordinances. These marriages are thought to be eternal and survive into the afterlife.
