What Does The Bible Say About Woman Preaching In Church

Mens And Womens Roles In The Bible

Does the Bible Permit a Woman to Preach?

First, there are some significant concepts we cannot miss in the overall theology of the New Testament. The most applicable comes from an Old Testament reference on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2, when the disciple/apostle Peter interpreted current events according to the prophecy of the Hebrew prophet Joel: Your sons and daughters will prophesy . . . on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy .

The word for prophesy 1 is a word that has a much more specific meaning of “divine inspiration” than do the more broadly defined words translated as preaching 2, proclaiming 3, or teaching 4. Prophesying is the reception and declaration of a word from the Lord through a direct prompting of the Holy Spirit and the human instrument thereof 5. Prophecy is listed as an even higher and authoritative gift than teaching or interpretation on two occasions by Paul . Throughout Pauls letters, women prayed and prophesied publicly and in worship and demonstrated other gifts of the Holy Spirit .

There is also Pauls racial, social, and gender unifying statement to the Galatians: There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus .

The creation account does not read, in the image of God he created him. Instead it is, in the image of God he created them male and female he created them .

Are Women Allowed To Preach In The Church Conclusion

So according to Gods will, women in the church are not allowed to preach or teach. I hope that the women who read these passages will give a serious thought to this issue instead of shooting through the roof. I didnt write the Bible and tell people what to do and what not. We are only confirming what is written in the Bible. Whoever truly loves God will gladly conform to his will. Are women allowed to preach? The bible says no! For all others, Pauls perfect conclusion applies. But if someone wants to disobey it, he may disobey it. In the end, every woman who defies this commandment and goes on preaching, has to face God on her own.

Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

A Biblical Survey Of The Role Of Women In Ministry

Of primary importance in defining the scriptural role of women in ministry is the biblical meaning of ministry. Of Christ our great model, it was said, For even the Son of Man did not come to be served , but to serve , and to give his life as a ransom for many . The New Testament leadership modeled by Jesus portrays the spiritual leader as a servant, whether male or female. The question of human authority is not of primary significance, though it naturally arises as organization and structure develop.

Genesis 2:1825 Some expositors have taught that all women should be subordinate to adult men because Eve was created after Adam to be his helper . Yet the word ezer is never used in the Hebrew Bible with a subordinate meaning. Seventeen out of the twenty times it is used, it refers to God as the helper. Eve was created to be a help suitable or corresponding to Adam, not a subordinate. Some argue that God created men and women with different characteristics and desires, and that these differences explain why leadership roles should be withheld from women. Others attribute these perceived differences to culture and social expectations imposed on children from birth to adulthood. Physical differences and distinctive biological functions are obvious but it is only by implication that gender differences can be made to suggest leadership limitations.

The Bible Versus Culture

In Pauls letter to Timothy, he says, I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man rather, she is to remain quiet .

Although the manner of Pauls communication was direct in saying that women cannot teach, have authority over men, and should keep quiet, this does not mean that a woman cannot serve God and His Church. Paul further elaborates this in his letter to the Philippians,

Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life .

Since Paul explicitly said that women cannot preach and be pastors in the Church, what then can women do in the Church? The answer to this is that the Bible emphasizes that women can teach about spiritual matters. Another perfect example of this is Priscilla as written in Acts 18:26,

He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

This Bible verse actually talks about Apollos as he was preaching. Let us go back to Acts 18:24-25,

Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John.

Women Should Preach Primarily Through Their Exemplary Behavior

What Does The Bible Say About Women In Ministry?

The way women preach consists primarily of setting a good example to others and in exemplifying Gods will in the best possible way. Everyone should know from their appearance and behavior that they are holy and belong to God. Women should first and foremost be a good example to others and thus teach others to lead a God-pleasing life. This role is by no means less important than that of the men who preach.

The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

Timothy : 12 And Women Preachers In Church

In 1 Timothy 2:11-12, Paul writes this:

Let a woman learn in silence and with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.

Initially, 1 Timothy 2:12 seems pretty clear, but with a little bit of study, it quickly becomes obvious that the text is not so clear after all.

First, there are numerous times in the book of Acts and in some of Pauls other letters where women appear to be speaking in the gatherings of the church with the approval of others, so whatever Paul is saying here, it does not seem to be a rule which he himself universally followed .

Second, even if Paul himself did require all women to remain silent in church gatherings, there is some debate about whether Paul was describing his own preference and practice, or whether he was giving instructions for all churches everywhere throughout time to follow as well. That is, this verse in 1 Timothy was written to a specific person about a specific situation at a specific time. Does that it mean it can be universally applied? Paul even says, I do not permit which is different than you should not permit .

So, based on these three considerations, a text like 1 Timothy 2:12 is not so clear as some believe about the issue or women preaching in church. The same is true for 1 Corinthians 14:34.

Is It Right For A Woman To Preach

First, lets talk about some of the things people have said about it. There are those who have tried to justify it by saying it doesnt apply to us. They say that the women he was speaking of in this letter were being unruly and causing disruptions during church. Therefore he was telling them SPECIFICALLY that they should remain silent.

The problem with this line of thinking is that Paul isnt saying âI suffer not a woman in your church to teach.â Paul is speaking generally of all women here.

Then there are others who believe it to be very clear that the Bible says women are to be in silence. They will refuse to allow a woman to teach, preach, give prophecy, or even speak in tongues and give the interpretation of it. Women are, to them, commanded to take a back seat.

But what is Paul really saying here? Its easy to just take this set of verses at face value, but like every other verse in the Bible, they are connected to every other verse in the Bible in some way too. When you connect the dots it takes on a whole new meaning!

I Do Not Permit A Woman To Teach Or Dominate A Man

Lesson: “Let your women keep silent in the churches”

The word authentein, which appears only here in the New Testament, is usually translated exercise authority. However, in later Greek writing, authentein is a harsh word that expresses dominance. Its sometimes used for taking advantage of someone in a business deal, or for violence or murder. This, obviously, isnt the type of authority that Jesus wants leaders to have . When Paul speaks of legitimate authority in the church, he uses the term exousia.

The women at Ephesus might have been dominating men through their teaching. But again, its more likely that they were not allowed to teach because they were bringing Artemis worship into the church. Remember, Paul left Timothy in Ephesus to command certain people not to teach false doctrines .

The situation in Ephesus is no reason for faithful women not to teach elsewhere. In fact, Paul tells Titus that the elder women in Crete should be teachers of good. In 1 Timothy, Paul was correcting a specific instance of false doctrine and ensuring that those responsible didnt continue to teach. False teaching that spiritually privileged women might easily turn into domineering leadershipas we see with false teaching that spiritually privileges men.

Why Women Should Not Refrain From Teaching

The last thing that we should do in the local church is to discourage women who have the gift of teaching to suppress their gifts. They should labor to teach, explain, and expound the meaning of the Bible on an ongoing basis in the life of the church and in the context of religious conference settingsbut there are still boundaries to observe in the process. The Church of Jesus Christ needs faithful women who bloom with the glory of Gods design for women and teach, instruct, and make disciples. Paul never suggested that women should not teach, but that they should merely refrain from teaching men and having authority over them. When asked if women should preach, John Piper responded by saying:

So I would conclude: No, that is inappropriate for churches to do that. God loves his Church. He loves men and women. He loves to see all of us flourish in the use of our gifts. No man or woman should sit on the sidelines of Christian ministry. Let that be plain. No woman, no man sits on the sidelines in Christian ministry. The question is not whether all men and women should be active in ministry. They should. The only question is how.

We must avoid legalism at this juncture, but we must not go the route of liberalism or antinomianism. The progressive attitude seeks freedom from authority, but God has never designed authority to be a burden to his people. William Varner, in his excellent book, To Preach or Not To Preach, writes:

Can Women Serve As Deacons Especially If Their Area Of Service Puts Them Over Men

Clearly, deacons serve under elders. If elders are male, then men are ultimately in authority. 1 Tim. 3:11 is ambiguous: Does it refer to elders wives, deacons wives, or to women deacons? We cant be dogmatic, but in light of Rom. 16:1 , it seems permissible for women to serve as deacons. It would seem best, generally, to have women deacons in ministries where they are leading other women. If they do serve over men, if questions requiring authority arise, they should be deferred to the elder over the deacon.

It Is Gods Command That Women Should Not Preach In Front Of The Church

According to the Bible, women are generally not allowed to preach or teach in the church because they should submit to their husbands and be quiet. If there is anything they want to learn, they can ask their husbands at home and be taught by them. Paul even emphasizes that this is a COMMANDMENT OF GOD and not just his own thoughts.

How Well Do We Model How Jesus Treated Women Its Such A Phenomenal Question From Your Point Of View Anna As A Woman How Do You Think Society Is Doing And How Do You Think The Church Is Doing

Anna – I think it’s a really important question to keep checking in on. I think Jesus treated everyone that he came across, regardless of race, religion, or background or sex, he treated them all with respect and incredible dignity.

How are we doing as a society or individuals? I think, the core of that question is, how loving are we? How much do we love ourselves? How much do we love those around us? And I think the answer is, we could always be better. I would like to think I’m someone who treats other people around me with dignity and respect. But if I’m rushing through a checkout in a shop and the cashier is being slow, how much dignity am I giving that person? Am I looking them in the face? How am I making them feel? It shouldn’t even be an issue of gender or anything. Everyone has an intrinsic value. And I think we can always get better at being loving like Jesus loves. Am I showing it as a Christian as well? I think we’re doing better as society on a whole, but there’s always room for Grace.

Matt – There is. And if I talk directly to the men watching the broadcast, this is a very good question you should ask yourself, and perhaps ask your partner or the females in your life how you’re doing.
